Nuclear Cannon Test Footage
03/04/09, 12:56 Some info:
The first artillery test was on May 25, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10,000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the US test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb); it was fired from a special artillery piece, nicknamed "Atomic Annie", built by the Artillery Test Unit of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. |

'Clean Coal' commercial by the Coen Brothers
02/26/09, 23:09 Uuh, the fly ash impoundments that gave way have nothing to do with 'clean coal' technologies, which is just a term designated by the DOE that describes types of carbon capture, gasification (extraction of hydrogen) and various other implementations of coal for energy other than direct combustion in power plants (coal to diesel, hydrogen fuel cells etc), also designs for more efficient turbines and cycles in power plants. I'm lazy, here-

(delete any spaces that show up in the link)
"Clean coal' is not a type of special coal, and it is not just one type of practice, its just a buzzword for research into these new technologies, none of which are commercial at this point, but have promise.
Those impoundments that failed are made up of the solids that are left over from traditional coal combustion, like the ash from burnt wood. Its as old and traditional as it gets.
The bottom line is, coal as we've utilized it is shit, but it can be used in a lot of ways that we are only beginning to explore that can be very efficient and low pollution. And until solar or wind or whatever can fill in for over 50% the US's energy needs in a cost effective way, coal and what we can derive from it shorter term with these cleaner technologies are what we have in the mean time, and these ads miss the point of that, esp when the only other alternative is turning off the lights
And go fuck yourself cena |

02/26/09, 19:08 Although honestly I have always thought that the best possible place to prove the mag lev high speed train concept in the US is from Vegas to LA. I-15 is a solid 250 mile traffic jam every single weekend and there is jack shit in between. Alleviate traffic, fuel commerce, and save firefighters and paramedics from Vegas and Cali from having to respond 50 miles to as many spectacular car wrecks |
