Nissan DeltaWing warming up at Le Mans
06/06/12, 01:44 The DeltaWing doesn't comply with any current rules. It's running without classification as the 56th entry to the race; a spot traditionally used for experimental, non-competing cars. The car is substantially under weight, as unclassified cars have no minimum. Competing cars also tend to be substantially underweight, but are required to carry ballast to meet weight minimums.
In the official Le Mans test, held a couple days ago, it proved to be 22 seconds off the pace of the leading car (the hybrid Audi R18 E-tron). A victory for the car would be to simply finish the race, as the team has had very little testing for such a radical design. |

There is more than one way to wreck a vette.
12/22/11, 01:46 For the impatient: the incident starts at about 9:35, but the lead-up is worth it.
I've always found the Corvette squad to be the most unsportsmanlike team in racing, primarily due to the fact that they're the only full factory funded GT team. They know that they can't take on the other factories (Peugeot and Audi) in protos, so they beat up on the GT classes.
The other teams in GT are privateers, who buy and prepare the cars they race, and at best, take the services of factory drivers. |

An Interview with 'Support'
06/21/11, 20:30 You have to fast for 40 days to purify your mind, then make the arduous summit of the 5th highest peak in Nepal: Mt. Bonews. When at the peak, you must yell your intentions to the four winds then wait for a shaman in the form of your totem. The shaman will push you off. Should you survive you shall be granted the right to post Hannah Minx videos to your hearts content. |

1939 Belgian Grand Prix
06/17/11, 22:13 The speed trial that Rosemeyer was killed at was done as a last hurrah for the unlimited cars; the new rules would have been in known about for months at that point. Safety was however a consideration in the new rules, which is why the engines were re-regulated by displacement and the silly max. weight rule was eliminated. |

1939 Belgian Grand Prix
06/17/11, 17:17 Quick correction: the new regs were for the '38 season.
The regs before that were a max weight of 750kg, and anything goes past that. Under those regulations the only cars that competed were Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union, and I suspect that the changes were made to try and lure more companies into building a GP car.
The earlier Auto-Unions were quite tricky to drive, with a tendency to snap over-steer. At the time this was thought to be due to the then novel mid-engine configuration (which actually causes a car to under-steer), but was actually caused by a flexing rear suspension. In this case more grip would have exacerbated the situation. |

1939 Belgian Grand Prix
06/17/11, 15:09 The cars of 1939 were significantly less powerful then the year before. Displacement was reduced from unlimited to 4.5L NA and 3L supercharged. The Benz previously had over 600bhp but this became about 490bhp with the new regs.
It's also a bit of a myth that the thin tires of the era made the cars hard to drive; in reality it just made them slow. |

Bill O'Reilly Interrupts President Obama 48 Times
02/09/11, 17:17 O'Reilly's an ass, but this sort of political schizophrenia comes from the fact that the US President is both head of state and head of government. It's an uncommon situation in democratic republics. |

Invisible Racecar Fire!?
11/04/10, 18:31 The most ridiculous part of this is that methanol replaced gasoline in Indycars as a supposed safety feature, due to the fact that you can put out an (nearly invisible) alcohol fire with water. It all stems from an over-reaction to a fatal gas fire in the early 60s. |

Fox News 'Angry' Over Colbert Testimony
09/24/10, 22:48 This took away valuable time that a congressional committee could have spent sanctimoniously grilling some retired baseball player about steroids. Just imagine the awesome, self congratulatory high-fives they would have given each other about that. |
