This movie tried so hard to be a heavy-handed commentary that it kinda forgot to be entertaining. The Ray Liotta car scene felt like a kind of punishing, "are you not entertained?" commentary on movie violence more than anything that had an actual point in the narrative. |

Defiance (Live Action Trailer)

It's a theoretically ambitious attempt to create a new property via a television show and a game that launch at the same time. SyFy tried something similar with their Red Faction TV show that came out around the same time as Red Faction: Armageddon. In the end, Armageddon performed so poorly that the video game series is never coming back, and the television show had a pilot TV movie aired but never went to series.
God bless SyFy for trying their best, but I'm pretty sure that this is going to end up in the same state after the next year or so. |

It's very bad without being aggressively bad. I saw the premiere episode at a press event for the game and was rolling my eyes the entire time. The lead character is smarmy and obnoxious but not in the fun Han Solo/Mal Reynolds way; just shitty and annoying. And the rest of the cast can't come near compensating for him.
The show will be cancelled at the end of the season, and I'll be really curious as to how the game will subsist after that. |

Am I the only one that eyerolled my way through this whole movie? SPOILERS: Not one but TWO separate "BEING CAUGHT WAS ALL PART OF MY MASTER PLAN!!!" gambits, with the second one being so stupid that I was practically rooting for everyone involved in British intelligence to get killed. Bond standing around and watching a sniper shoot someone in the head rather than, you know, attempting to stop him. An assassin being issued payment (in advance) via a casino chip that would easily lead any investigator right back to the moneyman behind the hit. Awful CGI komodo dragons. A villain who actually fucking monologues in the last ten minutes of the film when he could've easily killed Bond. Etc., etc.
I mean, I get that Bond movies are always a little ridiculous, but by and large this felt like it was a holdover script from the Brosnan era rather something that anyone involved with them now should be proud of.
Nice credits, at any rate. |

Oh man, this is a new level of sadness. Finding a space big enough to make it look like you're actually doing a club show, getting a vegan buddy to hang around and move the camera around a little bit, standing up and doing shitty jokes with no one in the room, finding a license-free laugh track, throwing it all together as if anyone could possibly care about what you're doing, etc. Painful. Worse than weed comedy. |
