The Gridiron Club dinner always has had shit like this. Presidents are supposed to show up, make fun of themselves, and be a good sport. The only difference now is that people have cell phones and youtube & etc in order to bring stuff out with them. We don't know what, say, FDR did at the ones where he spoke. For all we know, Herbert Hoover turned up in blackface and FDR had a hilllllarious routine about playing soccer with Winston Churchill.
That being said, the whole concept of reporters and political types coming together in a big mutual circlejerk is kind of dubious, when you think about it. |
