300 Brotherhood of Steel VS. 30,000 Deathclaw

I've got all 30 settlements at the moment, all of which except for Spectacle Island have at least two permanent residents. You're right - Coastal Cottage is kind of a crappy place, no open water and in an extremely inconvenient location, so it's one of my smaller settlements (5 or 6 residents, IIRC, and no companions). One thing I will say is that it's got a very nice view, but considering the fat that I've already got four other coastal settlements - Warwick, Nordhagen, Croup, and "my summer home" at Kingsport Lighthouse - developing Coastal Cottage is a very low priority!

My biggest settlements at the moment are Sanctuary, Starlight Drive-In, The Castle, Egret Marina, and Warwick, while my private retreats are at Taffington, Kingsport, and the Island. All of those are, in my opinion, nice places to build at; Coastal Cottage, not so much.

We didn't really do anything horrible to her directly, it's just that she didn't really seem all crazy, or at least not crazy enough to warrant the animosity directed at her. Fat and dorky, yes, but that could describe about 80% of the PoE readership.

Laughing at people like JDR, the spouse-abusing megalomaniac, Chrono, the teenage kid who thought he was an astral Super Saiyan, or Alix Henriol, the greasy-haired French model who married Sonic the Hedgehog and got banned from the Sonic fandom for being too creepy, I can get behind that kind of stuff. But WinterRose? I dunno. She was fat and she liked Disney; who cares?

Were you at the Coastal Cottage? There's a high-end monster spawning point just north of there - the first time I explored that spot, I was treated to a Godzilla-vs-King-Kong style battle between a legendary Deathclaw and a giant legendary Yao Guai.

It's a neat spot, but Deathclaws are constantly attacking my settlers there.

On the whole, I think this one's better than NV. I really miss NV's hardcore mode, but the overall world design is better, the Settlement building mode is insanely fun (great for fans of Minecraft), the companions are a lot less annoying, and honestly the new way they handle the perks, skills, and leveling is great. It took me an hour or two to warm up to it, but now I don't miss level caps or Skill points at all.

The only real complaint I'd have is the Mass Effect style storytelling. I'd MUCH rather have a silent, open-ended character whom I could actually roleplay (a la New Vegas), rather than getting railroaded into being some mopey dystopian whiner. This is especially true if you plan on playing as a female - FemSurvivor's voice actress and story-line are profoundly disappointing, to the point where I'm not even going to consider a female playthrough until the de-story-fy mods come out (at least MaleSurvivor has a generic military-commando backstory which explains how he can take out a Deathclaw at level 1).

I don't know if anyone here remembers this, but there was a rumor, earlier in the development cycle, that F4 wouldn't even allow you to play as a female character. I'm beginning to suspect that this rumor was in fact true, and after the media backlash, Bethesda changed their minds - only at that point they'd invested so much into their vision of how the story *should* be played, that FemSurvivor was doomed to be nothing but an awkward afterthought.

IZ - it's a free market and you are, of course, entitled to spend your money how you like, but I'd *strongly* recommend foregoing the Xbone and buying a desktop PC capable of running F4. Fallout for consoles and Fallout for PC are two completely different beasts; thanks to the Mods and "DOS commands" which are available for the PC version, you'll have an experience that's both less frustrating, and more immersive, by several orders of magnitude! The mod tools haven't even been released yet, and already on the PC version, I've tweaked my game so I can build settlements five times larger, upgraded three or four textures to Ultra-HD, given every girl in the game huge tits and a Red Sonja body, and fixed at least six potentially game-breaking bugs on my own. If you want a game that'll keep you amused for sixty hours or so, by all means, buy the console version. But if you want a game that'll keep you amused for six-hundred, a game stuffed with jetpacks, punk rock, lightsabers, MLP-colored dogs, an army of 30,000 Deathclaws, and of course tons of naked people and sex... do the right thing here, IZ! Get it on PC!

As for the humor, it's still there. The writers tried to take the main quest pretty seriously, but that's how its always been - a grim road, with lots of little funny pit-stops along the way. (for example, you can explore what remains of the Cheers bar, and there's a crazy baseball fan living in Fenway Park who's convinced baseball was a gladiatorial bloodsport) If you liked NV, I'm guessing you'll like this.

Yeah, the meanness was always a bit off-putting. I loved the site, and didn't mind light trolling, but the best part of PoE was the wonder and the magic of seeing how eccentric internet people could get, not being a dick and making eccentric internet people cry.

I generally didn't involve myself in the fighting, but I do remember telling Dragonguyver once that I hoped he fucking died. I feel pretty bad about that now - the telling him, I mean, not the wishing; he raped his cousin, so fuck him. Also, the whole thing with WinterRose, and telling my good friend Boomer he was crazy the first time I met him.
DJ Khaled lost at sea

I haven't had "phone" service in years. I've got a Google voice account and Skype, which works just fine for placing phone calls, and means that I only have to pay for internet, and not internet + absurdly overpriced phone service. However, the catch is, you're not allowed to call 911 from "phone-alternatives" like Skype. You either have to find the direct number to your local emergency services, make do yourself, or plead for help via social media.

I doubt very much that Mr DJ Khaled is too cheap to buy a smartphone with an internet-only plan, but I guess it's one possible explanation for why he'd use Snapchat instead of calling the Coast Guard.

Who's your favorite guro artist, by the way? I've been meaning to ask, but an appropriate opportunity never arose.

I actually haven't seen much work from him recently! I suppose he's still active, but there's such a glut of guro art on the market now that I'm guessing he's at least semi-retired. Looking at his blog, the only recent update is merely cashing in on the mainstream success of Death Panda.

CWC was sorta late in the game. He didn't start getting internet famous until 2007/2008 (after Kthor's son was born), and most of his attention came from ED and 4chan, sites which by that point had already overtaken poe and SA as the "in" spots for hip young atrocity tourists. The stuff Kthor mentions is all from the Golden Age; Chris is Silver Age.
Melissa Harris Perry Says Star Wars Is Racist

(of course, I still maintain that Ms Perry's comments are not, in fact, "libtarded". A little dumb yeah, but controversial? Hardly! And as for whether she herself is a quote unquote "crazy lefty" or not, I cannot say, as I do not know enough about her work. I would, however, encourage people not to use that term, even if - or particularly if - she is indeed a genuine "crazy lefty". The reason I say this is because phrases like "crazy lefty", "libtard", "right wing fascist" etc. are non-neutral, and make it extremely difficult for us to examine these dingbat's arguments {which might have merit!} critically, rationally, and fairly.)

To answer my original question, I believe the mental gymnastics on display are simply a function of what academics call "affective partisan polarization". An interesting (though long) paper on the subject can be found here:

http://www.shsu.edu/~sgu001/swpsa2015.pdf

The short of it is, Americans are becoming increasingly emotional and clannish, starkly divided into their own social camps and mostly unwilling to tolerate outsiders. It is not all dissimilar from the racism or religious xenophobia of centuries past; except now (Enlightened as we are) we do not use skin color or church affiliation to define who is Other, but rather, what blogs we read and television channels we watch.

It's hard for lefties to see a lefty acting like A Lefty, so instead, we reroute the damage and get back to a more comfortable narrative.

Here, try this experiment! Go find the biggest redneck Coastie you know, and ask him or her if there are any crazy libtards in the media. See what he or she says in response.

Cena - but do you think this way because she really IS the "only crazy lefty", or because you now identify with lefties (however we might define that term), and that makes it harder for you to understand your rival's perspective? I put it to you that, if you were still a righty, you would have been able to rattle off a long list of allegedly "crazy lefties", including Michael Moore, Rachel Maddow, Piers Morgan, Rosie O'Donnell, Kanye, Chomsky, every Hollywood celebrity besides Kirk Cameron, Dawkins, Paglia, and Bill Maher (the last three of whom are to various extents libertarian). You'd almost certainly disown Alex Jones (who is a Bush-hating, Russia-loving, slightly-right-of-center Truther, not a conservative), and probably wouldn't be too harsh on any of the others in your current list. Coulter and Malkin, for example, are (for their own respective tribe) about on par with pundits like Franken or Colbert, while Glenn Beck is fairly innocuous and difficult to hate.

Instead, I submit that Mirror Universe Righty-Cena would stroke his goatee, and say something like, "Well, there's Fred Phelps - but oh, he's really the only crazy conservatard"!
