Noam Chomsky Has No Opinion on Building 7

Chomsky's apologia for the Khmer Rouge goes WELL beyond "the average Iraq war critic". If you think Chomsky is *right* - both in denying the full extent of the Khmer's atrocities and in deflecting whatever remains back on the actions of US imperialism, then that's one thing, but I don't think anyone who's read Chomsky's opinions on the matter can chalk it up to just another case of rational, principled dissent. Unless he's since recanted - I haven't kept abreast with Chomsky, let alone Khmergate, for a number of years, so if he has decided to stop being such a pigheaded fascist and admit he was wrong, then I apologize and stand corrected! But I highly doubt that's happened.

In your defense, I will say that Chomsky is very methodological about what he does. Chomsky is not an unsophisticated propagandist - he is a supremely adept propagandist. He takes great pains to dress up his arguments in a veneer of objectivity and reasonable-ness, and not just on Cambodia or Vietnam, but on every political matter he's touched. It's part of his charm, aprt of what makes him such an effective and inspiring writer, despite the general poverty of his ideas. An uncritical reading of Chomsky's sophistry-laden prose could indeed leave one with the impression that he's "just another war critic" looking to challenge the numbers; hell, I thought that when I first encountered him, too! I know where you're coming from, Bort, I really do. But as anyone who examines his work critically will quickly surmise, Chomsky is one of the least objective and most unreasonable political writers this side of Pravda and Fox News. Chomsky staunchly refuses to admit that the Cambodian genocide was anywhere near as bad as it actually was, and uses every opportunity to deflect whatever remains back on the West. Any sort of balance or acknowledgement of possible Communist culpability in the atrocities he does not deny outright, comes as little more than an afterthought to fifty pages of slavishly Leninist rhetoric, and almost always segues immediate into yet more anti-establishment paranoia.

Anyway, we could argue about whether or not Chomsky was being reasonable in regards to Cambodia for hours and not get anywhere; he and his academic sparring partners have been doing that for years, and I doubt any of us could match up to them. ***THE IMPORTANT POINT***, for purposes of this video, is simply that we acknowledge the self-evident fact that Chomsky is a paranoid dingbat (we can all agree on that much, yes?), and yet *even he* is not paranoid enough for the Youtube Truther set.

The comments are great! They call Chomsky - one of the most shamelessly biased academics in the country, a man who sings praises for the Khmer Rouge because he's convinced the American establishment is the worse than the devil - an "establishment shill".

Also, a "Jew frack".

I also blame the Soviets for not having the nuts to stay in power and keep building newer, ever more awesome means of destroying the planet.

Wait, I thought men were the practical, sensible ones, and women were the ones who were all abstract and impractical, you know, like always obsessing over bullshit like makeup or shoes or feelings n' stuff?

Personally, I blame the writers of Star Trek TNG for killing the Space Age. Space used to be cool, but then it turned into one long sermon on the virtues of Marxism, sobriety, and talking out your differences with homicidal space monsters.

Entertainment news anchor mistakes Laurence Fishburn for Samuel L. Jackson

Yeah, at first I felt sorry for the guy, I mean maybe he just doesn't give a shit about celebrities and movies and stuff? But then SLJ pointed out that he was the entertainment news specialist, and my sympathy was gone.

That said, Sam didn't seem all THAT mean. Maybe my standards have been raised on account of Sam's many high-intensity-asshole performances, but I think the news guy got off light.

I have a bunch of OCs, and most are Earth or Pegasus (being as they are all from a primarily working class Manehattan neigh-borhood). None of them, however, are "me". My mane OC is Applejack's estranged cousin, the half-Earth/ half-Zebra pony Ganja Twerk, but she's not really anything like me. She has a few of my flaws, I guess, but she is very much her own character. Some of my OCs, like Klop Killah and Plot Twist, are almost polar opposites of me, and a bunch are just there for comic relief (Dirty South, Filly Blunt, and that ParodySue Japonyese Alicorn whose name changes every few weeks). The one OC that I can *most closely* identify with on a personal level is probably Faygo Dream, but even that is pretty tenuous, as I am neither a stripper nor a juggalette.

If I was forced to make an avatar OC, he'd probably be a Pegasus. My two favorite ponies are Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, and my two favorite background ponies are Bulk Biceps and Derpy, so Pegasi for me, no doubt. But I respect Earth ponies, and you've raised some good arguments in favor of them before.

One thing I did like was how his OC was an Earth Pony. I don't really like Earth Ponies myself, but you know, I respect that decision.

What I didn't like about that was how his OC, like so many other OCs, was basically just his own personal avatar - it was HIM as pony, right down to the crossed sword Cutie Mark.

It's a half hour of a fat brony showing off his guns and swords. Also he really likes Korn.

It's great.

Our culture has become so cynical and parody-ridden that the only sincerity left open to us is bad jokes we've forgotten are jokes.

That said, following 9/11, people were U-S-A chanting unironically for days, possibly even weeks, before it became part of the 'MERICA meme. What we're seeing here is a ritual that has come full circle, from sincere to ironic to sincere again, albeit an abortive sincerity that does little except highlight the pervasive cynicism of urban life.

Yeah, I've heard people say "arpeggios" in many different ways, but never quite like that.

Anyone know what kind of accent that is? Sounds kinda... Scotch-Jamaican?

The worst part is, he doesn't actually use that half hour to tell you HOW he's a badass. He simply reiterates his thesis statement, over and over, again often in the very same words, and makes no effort to expand upon the theme. Taking an hour to tell us how badass he is is bad enough, but the least he could have done was found enough material to *warrant* a half hour video.

"I watch ponies, but I own swords and I own guns, so I am still a badass." There, done. That's all he says, that's all he needs.

Another thing that bothers me about this is the implied assumption that watching ponies is somehow NOT badass, or worse, that watching ponies is anti-badass, and one must work extra-hard at being a badass in order to make up for it. It's the classic "MLP is un-maly" myth. This, of course, is not true; as I have argued elsewhere, MLP is one of the most unapologetically badass shows on television. The MLP-is-gay myth tells us more about society's tendency to privilege the male experience than it does about the show or it's fanbase - MLP has one of the broadest and most sophisticated takes on gender ever conceived of here in the West, and if it challenges anything, it is challenging our notions of *femininity*. And not just traditional views of femininity (which are a popular target in the modern imagination) but also the femme-hostile narratives of mainstream Second and Third Wave feminism! Ain't nothing threatening to guys here!

By engaging in this dialogue, Mr Badass Pony is giving weight to an issue which carries no weight to begin with. He should have taken the high road, like Bill Nye refusing to get sucked into Ken Ham's "Darwinists are Nazis" fagdance.

Or perhaps he truly doesn't believe that MLP is congruous with masculinity? As you say, Mr Badass Pony is clearly overcompensating. He is obviously not secure enough in his manhood to just go with it, so of course he's not going to be thinking and behaving rationally.
I watch ponies and I'm still a badass.
