04/06/13, 17:44 And I'm really not proud to admit this, but watching this, my first instinct was to side with the screaming marine. I actually wrestled with the idea of extending sympathy to the poor guy in the car, and it wasn't until I saw the dogtags and softcap on the dashboard that I was able to do so. | | Marine's EXTREME road rage
04/06/13, 10:02 It's... complicated. They do, but they aren't always very nice about.
When I was in service, I noticed that the level of military-civvie goodwill tended to be directly proportional to the square of the distance between the two groups. In places where there's not a lot of military personnel, civvies have a more romantic attitude about the military in general, and military folks are less stressed the fuck out and more receptive to the whole "American Hero" thing, so you really do see stuff like spontaneous acts of kindness. But as you get closer to permanent posts, like the place this was filmed, Camp Pendleton, civvies get less romantic and servicemen get less gracious. An NCO of mine illustrated the phenomenon quite neatly during one of his PUA lectures: If you're a soldier, and you're picking up girls at a bar, you tell them you're a soldier IF you're off on leave, in a place at least 100k from a major post. But if you're within that radius, you figure out what the nearest college is and you tell the ladies you're a student there, no, just a student, Army, me, naaaw baby of course not what makes you think that. There's a similar, related mathematical law based on your current distance from downrange - retirees and guys close to discharge are very gracious, grunts getting shot at on a daily basis, not gracious at all. This guy is at a major Marine base, and he's about halfway between in the shit and out of it, so tension levels are probably at around 75%; not enough to spark a full-on 'nam style civilian massacre, but more than enough to trigger a case of the raging jerkwads.
As for internal relations, it can get pretty bitter. The culture of espirit de corps means that there's a whole bunch of concentric group circles into which you get pigeonholed, and you're expected to root for the home team on whatever level of organization currently comes into play. You're expected to bash the other branches, you're expected to bash other MOSes, you're expected to bash the guys in your company who belong to the wrong platoon. Engineers bash MPs. Marines bash Navy. 82nd Airborne bashes 101st Airborne. Bravo Company bashes Charlie. Everyone bashes the Coast Guard. They're "friendly" rivalries, make no mistake, but if your job is killing people, I guess friendliness has a way of coming out weird.
And don't even get me started on the pogues. *I* was a pogue, and even I hate us!
The thing is, I'm sure if bullets started flying, Sgt Roadrage and the YT Platoon would be ready to lay down their lives for all those civvie fucks. But that doesn't mean they're going to like 'em. | | Marine's EXTREME road rage

04/06/13, 00:02 Well, I guess technically it IS a reply, now, but it wasn't meant to be. | | The Vegan Comedian

04/06/13, 00:01 What was that ultra-preachy leftist webcomic, with the almond eyed girl with the black pig tails, and every punchline was something about how Mother Jones was too reactionary for the author or how GM crops were literally going to poison our breathable air supply in less than a decade unless people started firebombing farms? I think it was featured on poeRED once. I ask because it was real popular with all the vegan activists I knew. | | The Vegan Comedian

04/05/13, 23:41 Is this game any good?
As a rule, I never click banner ads, and I never give online games a second glance. But I saw some ads for this about a month ago, and it actually looked really fun. Just going on the promotional video clips I saw and the Russian gibberish I couldn't read, it looks like they took IL2 Sturmovik and updated it with better graphics and a slicker engine. Is this correct? Sturmovik is one of my all time favorite vidya games, certainly the best flight sim to date (seriously, wtf is up with no one making flight sims anymore?!), and if this game is finally the worthy successor I've been waiting for, then that's... well, then that's pretty awful, actually, because like I said, I don't like online gaming. MMoh darn it. | | Perverted Justice Before Dateline
04/05/13, 20:21 THAT'S the founder of Perverted Justice? Pedobeard and everything? And his name is Xavier? Xavier Van Urk?!
I'm not surprised at all. | | Whiney nerd has a cryfit over Disney closing LucasArts (Semi-explicit)

04/05/13, 20:05 Yeah, in retrospect, I should have known he wasn't in the Coast Guard. Guy was way too chill and unfazed by the screaming Marine outside his door; a Coastie would have peed himself and handed over all his lunch money. | | Marine's EXTREME road rage
04/05/13, 18:35 So apparently the woman filming this is a paraplegic Marine, and the dorky guy getting yelled at, whom I originally thought must be some kind of Coastie, is actually her caregiver/brother. Real classy pair of targets to go apeshit on. Get outta the car, you paralyzed combat vet and her passive resisting civvie nurse!
The screamy dude probably has some serious trauma issues he's wrestling with, so I'm trying not to feel too embarrassed for him, but still. Fuckin' Marines, man. | | An entire radio broadcast from September 21, 1939

04/05/13, 16:19 If that's how we're playing, then seeing as most of us access this site on our computers or mobile web devices, it's not poeTV either. | | Whiney nerd has a cryfit over Disney closing LucasArts (Semi-explicit)
04/05/13, 15:08 Hang on, what? Hooker, you muppet, don't tell me you didn't like Full Throttle! That was the best game they ever did! | | SIMPSONS - GANGNAM STYLE ☆ 3D animated mashup parody

04/05/13, 09:19 But my horoscope said this was going to be a five star video!
Maybe you don't have enough ginseng diluted to .00001% concentration in your diet to really "get" how awesome this is? | | Whiney nerd has a cryfit over Disney closing LucasArts (Semi-explicit)
04/05/13, 08:01 LucasArts *was* a respected game company who *made* some amazing games. But they've been resting on their laurels for longer than some of their target demographic has been alive, so sad as it is, getting rid of them makes total sense.
This isn't RARE dying, suddenly and tragically, at the top of their game, this is a pampered vegetable going off life support because it's new, wicked stepmother doesn't want the family footing the hospital bill. | | SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE - Symphonic Metal Singer
04/05/13, 07:32 I'm surprised the music video didn't make it out of the hopper, but if anyone's interested, you can always check it out on YT. The song they're working on here is called "The Bloody Verdict of Verden (Blood of the Saxon Men)", and the video is really something else. Think Lord of the Rings, done over a long weekend, by LARPers, with Windows Movie Maker. | | SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE - Symphonic Metal Singer
04/05/13, 07:03 He was on death's door. And then Death saw him standing out there in the cold and was all like, "Oh shit! You guys know who that IS? That's Christopher fucken Lee, dude's fucken METAL." So Death had the valkyries let him in, hooked him up with a some sickass musicians, and the rest is history. | |
