Just Another Ordinary Day for a FedEx Driver
04/07/14, 05:54

I lost my first job because of a FedEx driver. Little bastard used to forge signatures and leave packages on the dock, rather than wait the extra the extra thirty seconds to find an employee and let us know he'd made a delivery. I let it slide, because whatever, dude was overworked and I'm not a busybody... until a few thousand dollars worth of textbooks never showed up, and I took the fall it. It wasn't even my name he forged, but at that point I was too fed up with office politics to fight the decision. That fucking asshole.

The UPS guy was cool, though.

Chrono Trigger.

That should pretty much end discussion right there, but you also had: Final Fantasy IV and VI, Link to the Past, Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Cybernator, Metal Warriors, Front Mission, DKC, SMW, Mario Kart, Mario Paint, Mario RPG, Super Castlevania, Super Metroid, a better version of Thunder Spirits, all the Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2 imports, King Arthur's World, EVO, Star Fox, Earthbound, UN Squadron, all of the Bomberman and Megaman titles, a better version of MKII, Killer frakking Instinct... really, the list could go on. SNES had superior hardware, superior sound, a better library of exclusives, a cooler controller; it kicked Genesis' ass across the board.

Now, Genesis may have had a couple better versions of multi-system games, thanks to Nintendos early censorship policy (which it wisely overturned following the MKI disaster), and it had better sports games. But then again, who cares about sports games? Dorks, that's who. Mutant League was the only remotely interesting sports series, but Sega only had a couple of those.

Mario 64 was the end of Mario for me. Part of it was the fact that I never got an N64 until years after the fact, having switched over to Playstation during that period. But I also couldn'tbring myself to play Mario in 3D; for me, the series had peaked in SMW, and the 3D was just a gimmick that added nothing to platform gameplay.

Sonic, I never really cared for, but his games were clearly the standout titles on the shitturds Sega kept flinging into the console wars.

On the other hoof, if they released a talking Rainbow Dash desktop agent, I would buy the shit out of it.

OZ- This was the AOL era. The internet was still fairly new to many people, particularly old people and idiots, and I guess the theory was that having a friendly, colorful GUI character on hand to dumb down certain routine tasks would appeal to these folks.

Evidently it didn't work, so I guess another answer might be, people DIDN'T want something like this on their computer! At least not until Siri... which I guess brings up another point:

*Companies* want to have things like this on people's computers. Not all technological developments are actually good for consumers. Consumer desires and interests may not be met by a new software strategy, but corporate interests might be, and that is reason enough for developers to try pushing stuff like this. BonziBuddy wasn't just a dumb interface gimmick that slowed down computers and needlessly complicated simple tasks for all but the most clueless of computer users, he was also a data mining and ad-serving agent, which was the main criticism people leveled at him at the time, and which this review doesn't properly address.

Looking around for BonziBuddy stuff this afternoon, I happened upon a rather depressing article:

http://www.cnet.com/news/bill-gates-says-microsoft-bob-will-make-a-comeback/

As you can see, there's clearly a lot of lingering support from on high for bullshit like this, despite the fact that Bob, Clippy, and Bonzi were all unmitigated failures... which, if the motivation at work was based purely on consumer desire, should have ended the long dark shadow of Bob once and for all. No, the suits think the little fackahs just need hipper packaging and stronger pushing from the top.

I wouldn't feel bad, John. I'm pretty sure Bonzi Buddy was aimed at people over 40 to begin with.

I can't imagine the sorts of bullshit I'll be falling for when I'm 40 and trying to navigate the Google VR HyperCloud.

Hey MGSB, the download page says "This version does not support PS2 peripherals, therefore functionalities such as multiplayer, versus, and co-op mode are not available".

Whazzat? Do they mean ONLINE versus is unsupported? Or any sort of versus mode whatsoever, including offline? If the PS3 remake doesn't support 2-player offline matches, I think I'll get a PS2 disc instead.

Yeah, I was just thinking that myself. The parrot's introduction could just as easily be describing the Google Overmind; the only real difference being Bonzi's annoying cartoon mascot, versus Google's cold, invisible Skynet.

Which one? IIRC, there were three dog helpers during the Clippy Era: Rover, Rocky, and Power Pup.

At any rate, the Office characters differed from adware assistants like Bonzi and Maeka in that they stayed put in their respective software, and generally didn't barrage you with ads/ screw with your registry / eat up bandwidth by constantly and surreptitiously sending your personal information off to god knows where. I never used them myself, but a less tech saavy friend of mine had Bonzi Buddy for years, and I suspect it was one of the leading causes for why his computer ran like shit. I told him to uninstall the damn thing, but his stepmom quote "loved the monkey", so Bonzi stayed until long after his official support ended.

I did consider installing Maeka, once, in a weak moment, but fortunately they charged money for her and I was still in my "if it's not on Limewire, I don't get it" phase.

The only good Cartoon Adware Agent was Maeka; has anyone done a review on her?

Peedy was the original BonziBuddy; he was replaced by the purple gorilla in subsequent versions. I'm not sure if there's a canon explanation for this, but I'm guessing it had to do with Peedy refusing to give his grandfather's land to the Jews.

Oh my God. I just downloaded the SNES one... it's got BAS RUTTEN and SABU! The Wikipedia article mentions there are barbedwire-and-lightbulb matches, but I can't seem to find out how to enable them; maybe those are only in later titles?

This series looks outstanding so far. Unfortunately, I don't have the faintest idea what any of the moves are, and the controls seem really complicated. Does the PS3/2 version have an English tutorial? And there seems to be a lot of customization options; does anyone know if this was the series that Yuke's got it's CAW mode from?
