MADE IN THE USA: Child Labor & Tobacco

I think the most important question to ask is: what exactly constitutes "abuse"? Child labour is, rightly or wrongly, considered one of the worst possible things on earth, by many individuals here in the West. Yet this revulsion towards child labour is a very new idea, barely more than a century old, and even today it is hardly universal, being confined mainly to the hyper-industrial West, and imposed (without much success) on the colonized Third World.

I think the key thing to understand about child labour is why our anti-labour laws were thought necessary in the first place, and where our modern moral outrage over child labour first came from. It seems to have been a rather understandable reaction against the horrendous conditions of many Victorian child-employing industries, combined with Christian ideas about the innocence of children, and the (arguably disingenuous) campaigns of early supporters of compulsory education, who thought childhood should be a time of indoctrination into the values of citizenship, as defined by the nation, and for developing the more specialized skill sets which would come in handy for future factory workers (such as learning to shut up and do meaningless rote busiwork, for a specifically appointed block of time, day in, day out, all year long).

Of course, this raises the question: if child labour can be made safe and equitable, then is granting economic self-determination to a child who wishes to work, really an inconsiderable proposition?

So what's the tobacco industry's response to this? Does this apply to ALL tobacco companies, or only a few? And are there any neutral sources who can confirm or deny the various allegations raised in this video?

Oh god, don't even get me started on plot! I just finished Bioshock Infinite, and I am so pissed at the "games should have plot" meme right now that I can barely think straight.

I get railroaded into ten tedious hours of walking down linear hallways, listening to some angsty girl spout exposition, no stealth no puzzles no roleplaying and like one easy fight every twenty minutes if I'm lucky, just so some asshat game designer with a film degree could BLOW MY MIND with that stupidass ending?!?! NO. NO. FUCK YOU, BIOSHOCK, AND FUCK YOU, PLOT.

Plot is for Ponies, not for games!!!!
The Greatest Hit of Disturbed

It's actually like a mashup of four or five of their songs. I'm not really a fan of SoaD myself, but I could see why people liked them. They were one of the better "radio" bands when I was a kid, and one of the few actually tolerable numetal acts. Disturbed just plain sucked, but SoaD was OK. And Weird Al addressed the Smells Like Nirvana thing at one point. I don't remember verbatim what he said, but apparently Kurt was really happy with the song, touched even, and the general impression was that Kurt would have wanted the song played in his memory.

I could totally see that. If Weird Al spoofs you, you know you've made it. If Weird Al ever made a song about me, I'd be totally honored, and I'd want it played in my memory, too.

It's a joke about a hard rock band that hasn't been relevant for nearly a decade. The joke is that all of their songs sound like this (they do).

Yeah, that's another thing. Manhunt was far too "moral" (in a Dexter sort of way) to be a satisfying murder simulator. You're just killing gang members and rapists, bad guys who "deserve it", you know, like you do in every other video game.

That, to me, makes the hook both less interesting - can't take the 3dgy premise seriously with a "good guy" copout - and, ironically, makes it even more sociopathic - because we're encouraged to root FOR the snuff film killer, like he's some kind of twisted agent of justice, rather than making your character into an amusingly ghoulish cartoon, like Freddy Kreuger or Godzilla. Self-righteous fascism is much more evil than self-aware sadism.

Hey fluffy, this is kind of a weird question, but you remember that guy you used to work with? The one who fucked his dog and uploaded all the photos to a company computer? Do you remember what his name was? He came up in conversation at work the other day, but I can't for the life of me remember what he was called.

I thought about playing it, but apparently you can only kill dudes, and not hookers or children. So what's the point?

And Mr Wildcat, I am not defending THIS dog. This dog is an asshole who deserved what he got, and regardless of his moral behavior, a dog who cowers before a stinking cat is no True Dog.

He shall never know the glorious halls of Woofhalla, never cross it's milkbone bridge nor play ball in the great fields of the gods. So bark we all.

Enjoy - I've had friendly pits and I've had asshole pits, but even the asshole pits were at least acceptable around human beings. It's true that, pound for pound, pits are bouncers - a pitbull who wants to kill you probably will. But pitbulls are *not* naturally killers. They were bred specifically to work well with humans and work poorly with other animals; a pit who turns killer (which is an extremely rare occurrence; any pit attack is bound to make the papers, in contrast to the far more common "invisible" attacks perpetrated by other, less newsworthy breeds) is doing so, not out of it's nature, but because of years of cruel, calculated abuse. It takes a lot training to make a pitbull suppress it's natural amicability and turn aggressive towards humans.

Anecdotal evidence is, of course, just anecdotal evidence; you need not take my word for it, merely because I have had a string of great dogs. However, one need only spend a minute on DuckDuckGo to see that that expert opinion confirms my position. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been any scientific or statistical basis for the belief in naturally human-aggressive pits; expert opinion is unequivocal on the matter. For example:
