I can't find any sources that show their work, or even tell you who DID the work, if indeed any work was even done. Wikipedia, for example, cites an industry website that makes no effort to back up it's numbers and, worse, actually contradicts the numbers that Wikipedia claims to have got from it. The actual estimates vary WILDY, and range from about 60k tonnes to 190k metric tonnes, with most hovering between 140k and 160k. Virtually everyone agrees that this is the total amount of gold EVER mined (that does include estimates from prerecorded history) and that it can't exceed 190k or so. Modern mining is also much more productive than ancient mining was, as Mr Purple Cat suggests; more than half of our current global gold supply has been mined within the past fifty years, and pro-industry organizations suggest that the planet's reserves of mineable gold will be exhausted within the next couple decades, unless we start extracting gold from seawater or something. |
