>>This reminds me, on a vastly different scale, of walkathons for various causes: I'd rather just give $30 to a charity than make a teenager walk a certain distance and then I pay in proportion to the discomfort endured. If I believe in a cause I should support it on its own merits, not just if suffering is part of the package.

I do agree with this. Verb-athons have always pissed me off, for this exact reason. Worse, there's the element of spectacle; Verb-athons are less about doing good, then they are about being seen to do good. You're not giving to charity, you're buying a shot of smug self-satisfaction and giving corporate sponsors an advertising platform. If you want to run/bike/jump for charity, I'll just send the money direct, today, to whatever charity you want; you can then do your thing whenever, at your own leisure.

I hate to say it, but John's right this time. Selective culling has always been a vital part of conservation work. If some girl wants to pay to be a part of that, who are we to judge?

Sure, she's rich and she's a cheerleader. I understand the tribal hatred at work here. But please, guys, hate the playah, not the game.

Mars isn't assertive, she's just mean. Like Cena said, Jupiter is assertive. Mars is a fratbro in a skirt.

And I might not mind so much if it weren't for the fact that Mars clearly has it in for Moon. She's always making Usagi cry! She must be super jealous of Sailor Moon (best senshi). Picture Rarity, only Rarity's stuck in Rarihick mode 24/7, constantly being mean to her friends. Or Flutterbitch - naw, screw that, I won't even dignify Mars by comparing her to Fluttershy. Rarihick will do.

That's your favorite senshi. Sailor Rarihick.

Mars was one of my least favorite SCOUTS. She's too much of a bitch, like all the worst aspects of Twilight and Rarity. How could you possibly like her over, say, Saturn?
Aurini - Dating Advice for Anita Sarkeesian

He really believes that Sarks is desperate for a man. As he explains in other videos, he's a neo-traditionalist who thinks that women only want, and always need, a strong male to guide them. The bit about Anita being an under (over?) educated pseudo-intellectual is presumably sincere, too - which again, fits in with my theory that the two of them would be perfect together.

As for whether he thinks Sarks knows less about video games than he does, I have no idea. I do know that he seems to have an even worse opinion about video games than Sarkeesian, and, unlike Sarkeesian, he wastes no time in spelling out exactly why he thinks they're a problem. There's no dancing around, dropping insinuations and hiding behind a veil of "discussion" in order to avoid having a position to defend. He thinks video games are the tool of Satanic Jewish humanists, and by golly he's not afraid to say it

Trolling is and always has been the art of saying something you don't necessarily believe, for no other reason than to piss people off. I'm sure Mr Aurini enjoys pissing people off, but I don't think that's his primary motivation here; it's a perk of his job, not the sole reason he goes to the office every morning.

He's just like Anita. He says dumb, inflammatory things, but it's not because he's trying to cleverly provoke a negative reaction from you, it's because he sincerely believes these dumb, inflammatory things.

It's the same way with Sailor Moon. Think of the manga like G1, and the anime like FiM. Sailor Moon used to be really girly and non-badass, but then it got good, and it's totally OK for guys to be into it, as long as your favorite Scout's not ChibiUsa or some shit (Caminante...!)

It's got monsters, lesbians, girls who can cut demons in half with lighting bolts. A bunch of characters die, there's all sorts of kung fu action, and it's like wall to wall hot chicks in miniskirts. Plus, you'd really like Jupiter, because she acts like Applejack.

I don't even think he's trolling. He's being a tad inflammatory, but I see no reason to assume that he's insincere in his beliefs.

Well, at least you can admit when you're butthurt, Mr Holmes. That shows a remarkable level of self-awareness. I still don't see how hitting on Sarkeesian triggers the butthurt event horizon, beyond which he ceases to be an object of derisive amusement, when he's done so many other things that are far more infuriating; hell, he's not even threatening to rape her, which is downright chivalrous considering the subject matter. But to each his own!

I'm serious about the video response, though. I'd love to see you give him a good what-for.

I've never seen a gay ulta-conservative who looks fresh from a Vampire LARP hit on Anita Sarkeesian before. When where these videos posted?

I know Sarkeesian is a touchy subject for some people, but Nominal's right. You and SolRo's reactions to this are a teensy bizarre. This is a man who belives, among other things, that video games are a Satanic tool used to sap the creative potential of the white race, that feminism is ruining America, not because it makes women all uppity, but because it gives "beta" males an excuse to shirk their husbandly duties and not put women in their place, and that the Holocaust was God's divine judgement against the Jews. We're on a website that routinely showcases assholes, furries, juggalos, and Sarkeesian herself. Yet here a comparatively tame attempt by one such asshole to Neg on everyone's favorite nerdy HB8 gets you choking and pawing at your ascot?

I always imagined that, if I were a drill sergeant, I'd make my privates do PT to the tune of Badger Badger Badger (Overhead Arm Claps for Badger, Cobras for Snake, and Monkey Fuckers for Mushroom).

None of my DSes did that. They did, however, have us march to the tune of Spongebob and Souljah Boy. I guaran-fucking-tee you that somewhere, right now, a "good cop" DS is quoting some stupid internet meme, much to the delight of freshly graduated teenagers.
Walmart Associate Choir - Eyes of a Child (2013)
07/06/14, 11:22

Well, here's something. Taken from the official WalMart writeup:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Walmart Associate Choir was formed in 1995 as a very small, informal group of people who loved music and loved Walmart. The Choir debuted the same year at the 1995 Walmart Shareholders Meeting with "Wal-Mart Pride," a song written by Verl Mason, Guest Choir Director. Today the Walmart Associate Choir is comprised of approximately 134 associates that work in Walmart Stores, Neighborhood Markets, Supercenters, Sam's Clubs and Distribution Centers from 32 states across the USA. Choir members are held to high standards as representatives of Walmart culture.

Through the years the choir has performed at meetings such as Shareholders, Merchandising, Year Beginning, Saturday Morning, Holiday, and countless other corporate events. The choir has visited stores of all formats, Clubs, and Distribution Centers to *******share the culture and positive outlook that make this company great.*******

The choir regularly reinforces their strong commitment to the community. They have performed at Hospitals, Senior Centers, and Children's Shelters in Arkansas and Missouri. The choir performed at events ranging from a Kansas City Royals baseball game to local town Tree Lighting ceremonies. They helped a community heal with song after the tragic tornado ripped through Joplin, MO. *******Songs of patriotism help the choir extend the Walmart culture beyond the boundaries of their Walmart family to the Nation.*******

As evidence of Walmart's commitment to children, the Walmart Associate Choir is now releasing "Eyes of a Child" as a benefit CD for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across the country. Following up their first CD in 1998, associates have come together as one voice to sing 9 original songs, written by their long time friend Verl Mason. 100% of the purchase price of each CD sold will go to CMNH. *******All songs on the CD have positive, encouraging, motivational lyrics that fortify the Walmart culture and will appeal to all ages and musical tastes.*******

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Asterix'd emphasis my own. I haven't been able to dig up much on who Verl Mason is, how the choir operates, or even if it still exists, but WalMart seems pretty forthcoming about having selected the lyrics specifically to promote their culture of corporate indoctrination.

It's nice that they donate the proceeds to charity, but I'm still not buying one.

No. I don't think they are. I went through most of the playlist last night, and all of the songs touch on the same basic themes: be happy with what you've got. Enjoy simplicity. Be docile and tractable. Give up. Knowing WalMart and their standard approach to employee indoctrination, I don't think any of the lyrics were chosen by accident.

A child does not worry about health care and unions. Oh, Ye Associates of Walmart, be like unto a child.

Like for example, the original anime series got a flak from certain critics because they deemed it's art style to be too "boyish". The manga was drawn in a very distinct shouju-style; the characters were very slender, elegant, waify. Everyone looked like long-legged fashion dolls. The anime took a different approach: the characters were more voluptuous, with proportions closer to those you might see in popular male-oriented series, like Ranma 1/2 or DBZ. Many manga fans claimed the anime Scouts looked like Sailor Moon as envisioned by Japanese men.

Now, I actually liked that. Shoujo style doesn't really appeal to me; I preferred the anime designs to the manga ones. These new designs, though? They look like a nice compromise. I can definitely see the manga influences, but it's more subdued, less frou-frou than Naoko Takeuchi's original art. It's not what I would have done if I were in charge of the art direction, ooooohhhh no no no not by a long shot, but you know what? I think this will please the widest cross-section of fans, and that's for the best.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I "prefer" either version. I love the classic transformation as much as anyone. I am simply happy this exists!

And please, please don't get me started on the eroticism of Sailor Moon.
Scooby Doo can doo-doo, but

I'm indifferent towards Family Guy. I loved it when I was younger; back in highschool, when it was fresh and new and the humor was targeted directly at my demographic. Me and my buddies used to pirate episodes off Napster and watch them in between classes. I got bored with it after awhile, though; it was never as good as the Simpsons, and the joke structure got old. But the quality didn't fluctuate as much over time. It definitely did get worse, probably around the time that American Dad came out (that show's awful; I force myself to watch a bunch of episodes, and to date I've only laughed once, at a furry party sequence), but the gap between a bad Family Guy episode and a good Family Guy episode is small compared to the gaps found in the Simpsons. Family Guy ranges from background noise to background noise I can easily tune out; Simpsons ranges from excellent and engaging television, to oh my God I hope nobody sees me watching this I feel so embarrassed and even a little defiled.

The last couple Simpsons seasons actually weren't too bad. They weren't brilliant, but I don't regret going back and trying to watch them, whihc is more than I can say for any other season since 12 or so. The absolute worst Simspons bits tend to be when they bite off Family Guy, trying to be super edgy and cruel. I can't cite any specific examples off-hand, but the Dark Age writers definitely seemed to want to cash in on the then-current success of shows like Family Guy and South Park (which, in my opinion, is still going fairly strong, probably on account of having the same core creative writers for it's entire duration)

What this means is that they'll probably try and make the special like a Family Guy episode with Simpsons characters throw in, and it won't work. But everyone's going to watch it, and the advertisers will love buying spots, so I guess in that sense it will be a success.
