Enjoy - I've had friendly pits and I've had asshole pits, but even the asshole pits were at least acceptable around human beings. It's true that, pound for pound, pits are bouncers - a pitbull who wants to kill you probably will. But pitbulls are *not* naturally killers. They were bred specifically to work well with humans and work poorly with other animals; a pit who turns killer (which is an extremely rare occurrence; any pit attack is bound to make the papers, in contrast to the far more common "invisible" attacks perpetrated by other, less newsworthy breeds) is doing so, not out of it's nature, but because of years of cruel, calculated abuse. It takes a lot training to make a pitbull suppress it's natural amicability and turn aggressive towards humans.

Anecdotal evidence is, of course, just anecdotal evidence; you need not take my word for it, merely because I have had a string of great dogs. However, one need only spend a minute on DuckDuckGo to see that that expert opinion confirms my position. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been any scientific or statistical basis for the belief in naturally human-aggressive pits; expert opinion is unequivocal on the matter. For example:

What happened to the Bouncer's Code? That MMA powers should only be used for good, and not evil?

It only keeps the regular kids safe during school hours. Meanwhile, like prison, it helps the crazy kids pool their resources and learn new, ever more fucked up ways of being a little bastard.

In fact, the *worst* trained pitbulls - that is, pitbulls just left to the whims of their own nature, with neither abuse nor firm, guiding love to teach them how to act - are almost uesless as guard dogs because of this. They scare the hell out of breed-ignorant people, but you're more likely to be licked to death than bit.

Actually, Enjoy, I am fairly well informed, having grown up with pitbulls, including both rescues and nonrescues. The pitbull's "defensive nature" does not mean what you think it means: pitbulls are naturally defensive around *other dogs*, and a poorly trained pitbull will regularly show aggression towards other dogs. Pitbulls are not naturally inclined to display aggression towards human beings, and in fact, are famously docile around *children* - ever the boogieman story for the sort of people who imagine pitbulls to be a kind of ticking dog timebomb, like big scary black men in the minds of gated community dwelling whites.

"Some dogs" need insane amounts of training to BE aggressive and dangerous. Dogs like pitbulls, who are actually one of the most amiable and docile breeds on the planet, bred specifically to work well with and around humans, who only "go bad" through years of abuse and rigorous fight training, and even then are statistically far less likely to attack humans than many other breeds - their "bad" reputation being entirely the product of mass media sensationalism.

Of course, as a dog lover, you probably know this already.

Oh, we had plenty of ideas what the other kids were going through, thanks to groups and the fact that delinquent kids love to talk about why they're delinquents. Mostly drugs and child abuse. Some of the grownups liked to blame gangs, but honestly? A lot of the gang kids, the gangs were the only thing that WASN'T dysfunctional about their lives.

One positive thing I will say is that at least the math teacher is trying to teach. That's rare; usually, a school like this, the faculty is either too burnt out or too busy babysitting to even bother with algebra. Not that all the kids were stupid, no - one of my roommates, a street kid who got scooped up by the state when they found him trying to raise his own brother and sister in an abandoned apartment, wound up going to MIT years later - but the lessons are generally just a formality, to appease state licensing boards.

But who knows? Maybe the algebra teacher was just teaching for the camera. I'm sure everyone's trying to be on their best behaviour, in whatever manner they define it.

I did a tour of duty in a school like this, back when I was about thirteen. I made it out in a year, thank God, but they're shit-holes and honestly, if anything, the VICE crew is understating how fucked up they can be.

It's not too bad: a collapsed arch and severe range-of-motion issues in both of my ankles. The biggest problem, at least as far as the military was concerned, is that I can't run any more - or rather, I can, but I pay for it afterwards. For example, a simple two mile run, even with orthopedic sneakers, I can finish it but I won't be able to walk for about a week. I don't know if you know much about permanent profiles and medical stuff - dear God, I hope you don't, stay as far away from that bullshit as possible - but I am eligible for alternative PT. I can still do cardio, biking and swimming especially, but the Army loves their running and marching... and I assume the Coasties do too? The running, at least? I can't imagine running would be all that useful on a boat, but the Navy does running so it would stand to reason that the Coasties do the same. Anyways, biking and swimming are fine, and the Army does offer those as alternatives to the two-mile run for permanent profile guys... but that's usually reserved for gimpy old officers, or for highspeed combat vets who are missing both their legs. I had neither the time in service nor the rank to make it worth the Army's bother.

I really doubt it'll come to war, at least between the US and Russia, but my guess is they'll pull in as many people as they can find on as many pretexts as they can muster if it does come down to it. I don't really *mind*, I signed up knowing I had a ten year bid regardless, and as much as I'm opposed to the idea of war with the Russians, if Americans are being sent over there, fuck the hippies, I'll go, too! It's the least I can do, especially in light of how useless I was during my first stint in the Army. But having been home for a number of years now, I've grown rather accustomed to the idea of not actually being killed, at least not unless I'm being paid six-figure contractor dollars. I love the ocean (I can't stand being anywhere other than the coast), and the Coast Guard seems to do a lot of nice humanitarian missions, so... I dunno. Just brainstorming. I think "make plans to join the Coast Guard" would be a more sensible doomsday plan than "buy a bunker and stock it full of bullets and Bibles".

Can't it be both? They've got every right to do this to themselves, and if this is what makes them happy, then that's really all that matters. But they're still tragic clowns and you can still be disgusted with them, if that's what feels right to *you*.

I think the bitterest irony here is that these people were rather good looking to begin with. With Catman, for example, he was a recluse who wanted to turn himself into a hideous freak, and through plastic surgery he accomplished that goal. These people were fairly attractive socialtes who wanted to become even more beautiful, and wound up becoming lumpy monsters. What I'm wondering is, are they aware of the irony? Or do they genuinely believe they look"better" this way?

Possibly! I haven't been painting as much as I should; the cosplay jerks kinda wrecked my momentum, and now I'm busy working on a documentary soundtrack and helping a friend Kickstarter his children's book, but I'll put it on my list of things to get to, once the Bob's Burgers painting is out of the way.

Casey is off gambling. He is very good at it. That is how he's affording his treatment, gambling winnings. The dementia is just a cover story, because he is ashamed. Of the gambling.

He is not being held captive in a shack by a Mexican meth dealer. That would be crazy.

Speaking of the Coast Guard and Russia, how's the Coastie recruitment these days, Cena? Do you know if they accept veterans with prior service-connected medical discharges?

I'm wondering because I'm still in the inactive reserves, so if WWIII kicks off, I'll most likely be called up again... and frankly, I'd rather be in the Coast Guard this time around, less chance of being nuked when you're on a boat.

NEMHF is pretty great, if you're into metal or hardcore and live on the East Coast. ProgPower is another good one, but if I'm going to go all the way to Georgia for a music festival, I might as well go to Germany for Wacken, instead! Wacken is basically the Gathering for metalheads; pretty much every big name in metal has played or will play there. For example, this year they've got:

Megadeth, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, Devin Townsend, Archenemy, Emperor, Apocalyptica, Hammerfall, Slayer, Skid Row, Motorhead, King Diamond, the Red Hot Chili Peppers for some reason, and Hatebreed, who are terrible but come from my hometown, so whatever.

Apparently all 100,000 or so tickets sold out in two days.
