Replacing a motorway with a canal in Utrecht
01/07/16, 06:59

Of course it was a near-pointless motorway; it didn't connect to any other major roads and it cost Dutch taxpayers millions! Now they've spent countless millions more turning it back (money which could have otherwise been put to far better use). I'm not saying I'd be pissed about having another canal in the middle of my city again, and I'm aware that having waterways can be a boon to The Netherlands (although it doesn't seem as though this particular stretch of medieval-moat was preventing the sea from reclaiming the entire country). What I'm saying is, it's incredibly wasteful, and it reeks of either incompetence, misappropriation of funds, or both. Surely, those are all things worth getting pissed about?

I think an "American" response (the Big Dig, a similarly mismanaged public works project, prompted decades of muckraking, vicious satire at the expense of the authorities, and even criminal charges) would be perfectly sensible in a case like this. In fact, I'd argue that simply accepting this without complaint would amount to, not "pragmatism", but complacency!

I think it was legit; to the best of my knowledge, nobody from Look Around You was involved in this, and IMDB gives no indication that it was meant to be taken as satire.

Remember: Britain was the place that gave us things like Trapdoor, the horrifying claymation cartoon

and of course, Jim'll Fix It, the quirky variety programme about rape.

Some questions for everybody; answer however you like, because every viewpoint is valuable:

1. How do we define the word "terrorist"? Are the militia terrorists? What about the Hammonds, or the peaceful protesters who were on-site days before?

2. What do you believe the proper response should be? Which authorities should handle this situation, and in what way?

3. How did you feel about Waco, Ferguson, or OWS? Do you believe the authorities responded appropriately during those events?

4. How much of threat, directly, do you believe terrorists pose to you or your loved ones?

5. Is it wise to curtail liberties in the name of national security? Ultimately, which is more valuable - freedom, or safety?

6. How appropriate is the name "Y'all Qaeda", given that it alludes to a group financed, trained, and in at least some cases actively directed by, the US military and CIA?

7. Is casual racism and the dehumanization of sociopolitical outsiders acceptable? If not, can exceptions sometimes be made, if the targets of our contempt are Bad People?

8. How has America changed since George W Bush left office?

I think the narrator is brushing over some issues here. Did the people of Utrecht really "embrace the water instantly"? Despite Mr Narrator's assurances, I don't see a lot of enthusiasm coming from the few bystanders actually caught on camera, and I can imagine that if I were a Utrechter, I'd be justifiably pissed at everyone involved.

I'm not sure if Dog With a Blog had an episode where Avery, petrified with fear and much to Stan's delight, is forced to sleep with a dying camel who wants to eat her.

I think the pervading atmosphere of horror in this show has got to do with the fact that it's an English kid's programme. English children's telly was (and for all I know still is) astonishingly creepy.

Final Fantasy plots are incomprehensible and dumb, but I've long wondered whether this is due to spotty English translations, or if they were always incomprehensible to begin with.

So question for our JaPoEnese users: have you guys played the Japanese versions of any Final Fantasy games? If so, are the stories and concepts any better when presented in the original language?

I was going to ask if the actual show was as terrifying as EIT makes it out to be, but I just watched an unedited episode on Youtube, and as it so happens - yes. Yes it is terrifying.

(Fallout 4) Macho Claws
01/06/16, 12:36

A lot of people are saying it's shitty because they themselves are bitter, cold-hearted, autistic nerds (hello, NMA!). On the flip side, easy-going, fun-loving autistic people will find a lot to love in Fallout 4.

FO4 is great. The story is shitty and easily the worst so far in the Fallout series; however, the gameplay, and the world you have to play in, are much improved.
Donald Trump cuts head off ISIS and takes their oil
01/06/16, 03:31

Well, hopefully the US Special Operations Command, who apparently "do not even understand" ISIS, will read The Atlantic's hard-hitting expose and figure out a way to bomb those medieval savages into submission, before ISIS can bring about the end of the world (that is what they want, you know). As The Atlantic so concisely points out, ISIS is a group who represents Islam - only hang on maybe it doesn't (discuss amongst yourselves!) - and nobody knows where they came from or why they just emerged suddenly over the last fifteen years. What we DO know is that they are nothing like us civilized Western liberals (including the civilized Western liberals of Al-Qaeda, such as our old friend Mohammad "Walmart" Atta), and (as the article's not-at-all-ironic conclusion makes clear) they will stop at nothing to realize that most-romantic and tantalizing of political movements: fascism.

I mean, those ISIS extremists don't even like to spend their evenings watching Hollywood movies! It's madness.

Or, maybe Major General Nagata and the SOC could have talked to the CIA, State Department, and Amy Goodman:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqtSaIikQ-o

US military intelligence and the Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/09/AR2006040900890_pf.html

And any one of the various people who, during the 1980s, were involved in the US-backed effort to undermine the Soviet war effort in Afghanistan. I'm sure Gen Nagata knows many of these folks; as the head of the US military's counter-terrorism force (recently promoted to the National Counterterrorism Center, one of the primary organizations spearheading total information awareness), Nagata could have perhaps talked to these employees of his PRIOR to his interview with The Atlantic, to give him a better idea of, and help him to better explain what, his own damn job is.

... or perhaps he didn't check his facts with Amy Goodman, because he still resents her for running this?

How Facebook is Stealing Billions of Views
01/06/16, 01:29

I'm with you there, SP! And yeah, Boomer, it's funny you use the Dogs analogy, because that's the same analogy I've been using to explain Youtube post-monetization. Ad-sense money really is just scraps, and it has been causing the dogs to fight each other.
How Facebook is Stealing Billions of Views
01/05/16, 16:36

What makes them think that these "stolen views" are literally "stolen", and not simply generated independently? That is, the 15 million viewers-on-Facebook who clicked through your video in five seconds, had they not done this, would they have otherwise gone to your Youtube channel and watched the whole thing? If you were GOING to get 15 million views, but only received 1 million views, because Poaching, then that is one thing. But if you were only ever going to get 1 million views in the first place, and those 15 million additional views were generated ex nihilo, then it seems to me that instead of whining, the optimal strategy here would be to accept that your Youtube strategy isn't working as well as you'd like, and start sharing your videos on Facebook.

Also, around two minutes in, the narrator states that the free and natural sharing of information does not increase exposure for independent content creators. That's a rather bold claim; do they provide any sources for this?

Donald Trump cuts head off ISIS and takes their oil
01/05/16, 14:11

I don't see why people have a problem with that, either. Remember, one of the hard realities of sustainable development is that the average American *needs* to see a severe decrease in her quality of life. Tiny houses and communitarian land reform won't just happen magically overnight; one way or another, Americans need to be driven into bankruptcy, and Trump is more than qualified to do this.
Donald Trump cuts head off ISIS and takes their oil
01/05/16, 09:14

Well, at least he's honest. Unless I'm mistaken, neither Obama nor Hillary mentioned the Syrian pipeline at all during their most recent spat of warhawking, and if this ad means that Trump intends to stop funding, training, and militarily-supporting ISIS? All the more reason to get behind him.

ISIS, you're FIRED.
Why Marijuana Should Stay Illegal
01/05/16, 08:38

>>The only downside in this country is that due to regressive politicians in the last 20 or so years, there's a weird grey area in that people are not allowed to grow it on an industrial scale here, which leaves the cafes with the problem of where to source it, which in turn has led to the gangs once again having control over that supply, with grow-ops in suburbs routinely catching fire et al.

I don't think we'll have to worry about that, if and when pot gets re-legalized on a federal level here. After legalization, marijuana will be "properly regulated", which is an American euphemism for the state using bureaucratic oversight to squash smallscale growers, while at the same time promoting the interests of a select few monopolies. Our country will quickly get behind three or four too-big-to-fail Big Pot conglomerates, and from then on weed'll be just like any other product on the market.
Marine Jon Ritzheimer's goodbye message
01/05/16, 06:54

Yeah, the Hammonds got the short end of the stick, but they seem like reasonable people; they're willing to do their time, and they don't want Ritzheimer's group anywhere near them. The sensible response would be peaceful protests, prison letters, and social media campaigns - but now, thanks to this fucking guy, what we're going to get is a hundred dead bodies, stronger terrorism laws, and yet another crackdown on civil liberties.
