I was reading an old grimoire recently that had an "infallible" method of finding treasure, and it involved keeping a virgin boy fed on certain things and required to wear a specific robe, at which point the magician was to give him a magical ink, a magical bowl filled with magical water, lock him in the room and wait until the ink dropped in the bowl gave him the vision of the nearest treasure, at which point he'd presumably tell you, instead of, you know, going to get it for himself after this whole rigamarole of abuse being deserving of a large pile of gold. |

The summer of 1999: I get accepted into the University of Washington, the long and arduous process that entails for somebody with no money and middling grades, and I take a French Cinema class. The prerequisite being two semesters of French. I can fake French pretty well, I studied Latin and can read it quite competently, but speaking it is way out of my league. Nobody at the university actually checked if I had taken the prereqs.
I do great for the Georges Melies segment. Fantastic, even.
Then came "Le Grand Illusion" without subtitles. I was fucked. |

It was full of original art and sound direction for the time, which is something that does get lost 25 years later. It was very accurate to the comics at the time, as was Adam West to the comics of the 60s. Burton should just be an art director and leave the selection of scripts and actors to other people.
I'm glad he did "Ed Wood", and in some sense I'm glad "Nightmare Before Christmas" exists, but lets be fair, "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" was not his film, it was Pee Wee and Phil Hartman's, but if he was just a guy who designed sets and costumes, he'd have done less harm. |

I want my government to know who conforms to any given image of a threat. I don't want my government to acts on said knowledge until there is evidence of a threat, but, and here's where I sound like an absolute Conservative McConservatism, but I also seem to think they know what they're doing. They've been doing it for a long time, they know a few things. Yes, they make errors now and again, but we never hear about the successes.
And fuck ICP, I think that's important to say. |

The best Batman movie, probably because it assumes that you, the viewer, already know who Batman is and who the Joker is and although there are flashback scenes, it doesn't waste time with endless James Bond exposition scenes. |

This film was my first ironic discovery, before I even really got into MST3K. I would yammer on to friends about how dreadful it is, how all the parts are woefully miscast, how it looks like how Skittles taste. I grew out of it, of course, but this was the first taste for me of the adult I'd eventually become: a cultural fecalphile. |
