I don't think "conformity" is any different from joining a hyper-clannish subculture with socially unacceptable wardrobe and esoteric lingo. Furthermore, don't rail against "conformity" and then make sure that everybody knows you only listen to one band and have zero interest in seeing if you happen to like anything else, simply because said band flatters you and your perceived "outsider" status, whilst simultaneously foisting merchandise at you through every angle.
Assimilation into greater society is part of growing up. Learning to behave in a way that is inoffensive to people unlike yourself is an important step to adulthood. |

It's funny, I went to an art school within a state school, and I feel like I had the opposite problem: too much technique. I remember in one watercolor class the assignment was "make 200 shades of green". I was kind of aggravated by it. To be fair, right now I appreciate knowing that I know how to make 200 shades of green. |

As an American who is not particularly tied to any single place, either through ancestry or personal history, I've never been able to understand the "Promised Land" mentality. Did it have to be in Palestine? No. We could've given them any number of useless places in the big square states like we did with the Indians. There's lots of places still left in the world that people aren't really interested in fighting over. |

Last time I ate at Applebee's, I had some sort of terrifying macaroni concoction that was on the "Couples Dinner" menu. The fact was that my parents were going through a nasty divorce, and my mother was deeply depressed, and I offered to take her out to dinner, anywhere she wanted. So she wanted Applebee's. The resulting dinner was absolute agony on my sensitive liver and obviously didn't cheer her up any. I even splurged on dessert, but I think the waiter was really pissed that we didn't order drinks (my mother is an evangelical teetotaller).
I've never had liver issues as bad as I had that night, yeeeeesh. It was like an angry crab was in my gut. |
