Why America's Leading Libertarian Is Endorsing Mitt Romney And Joining The GOP
10/31/12, 00:51

"Libertarian" is what you say when it's socially innappropriate to say "Silver Shirt".

"Kitsch, using for raw material the debased and academicized simulacra of genuine culture, welcomes and cultivates this insensibility. It is the source of its profits. Kitsch is mechanical and operates by formulas. Kitsch is vicarious experience and faked sensations. Kitsch changes according to style, but remains always the same. Kitsch is the epitome of all that is spurious in the life of our times. Kitsch pretends to demand nothing of its customers except their money -- not even their time."

I'm starting to wonder if Clement Greenberg was right. And then I realize that having that thought means I'm instantaneously wrong.

No. It isn't.

My genetic predisposition toward Puritanism is sometimes filtered out through a nasty hatred of anybody having any fun whatsoever. I'd apologize but I know I'm not sorry, but I'm at least capable of acknowledging it as a flaw.

Yes, yes, you've somehow turned Halloween into a competition wherein you try to make the mundane decorative aspects of the holiday into something EXTREME AND DEEPLY DESCRIPTIVE OF YOU AS A HUMAN BEING, when 20 years ago, adults who got too into Halloween were a fringe group at best.

So thank you for ruining an expression of simple joy, and turning it, like everything else in our culture, into the substitution of your essential humanity for a materialistic concept of individuality as Facebook Novelty, the greatest irony of choosing Halloween to do it being that Halloween is in and of itself a moment of pondering death and decay and the inevitability of it all. But hey, all praise to the eternal present slideshow of your life. You've won Halloween.

Now I have some other things to tell you. I have big plans for 2013. One of the first releases for that year will beÖmy very first E-book. Yes, I will put out an e-book next year through Lulu. What will this e-book be about? It will be about how to make comics. Drawing upon the information from this blog as well as the insights Iíve gained through working on Sunnyville Stories, I will put out an e-book about writing, pencilling, inking, and generating ideas for comics. Watch for more details as they emerge.

Also through Lulu, I will be putting out an art book through them. It will be a coffee table art book in hardcover and will be sold EXCLUSIVELY through Lulu. But wait: thereís more. The Sunnyville Stories coffee table art book will contain a total of twenty pen-and-ink drawings that will not be available ANYWHERE ELSE!

Thereíll be continuous updates here on the blog so be sure to watch for more details.

I do the work I do to be in control. The world is constantly changing and seeks to impose its will on me. By listening to my own self and my instincts, I regain my control. My intuition helps me express myself and make sense of a chaotic world.

I draw upon my subconscious and trust my intuition. If instinct tells me Iím doing good, I keep at it. If instinct feels wrong, I stop and try to make order out of chaos. I summon my feelings, my imagination, my experiences, and my heart. I trust my own judgement.

In the sequential art I create, I want to make what I want rather than listen to what others want. My own desires for acceptance and for times long gone are reflected in my work.

In the coming weeks, Iím planning to head down to the Southern USA with some art supplies to do on-site sketching and painting. I havenít decided on where I will go. Iím leaning towards Richmond, Virginia Ė the capital of Old Dominion. However, Iím also debating going back to Huntsville, Alabama, back to the state of Texas, or visiting for the first time the state of Tennessee.

Why am I doing this? I feel that doing some traveling and capturing what I see in the form of watercolor sketches, pen drawing, and pencil drawings can really help me grow as an artist. It will help my skills, Iíll learn some more practical application of color, and Iíll get reference to use in my artwork as well as my comics.

The main inspiration for my trip was one taken by my favorite artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) along with August Macke (1887-1914) and Louis Moilliet (1880-1962). In 1914, these three artists went to the North African country of Tunisia. The country was very influential on their artwork and they produced many studies there that helped shape their own styles.

Thereíll be more information as details develop on my planned trip. Plus youíll see my sketches posted here to my blog.
