The nerdiest guy I know went into the Coast Guard.

I didn't think anybody actually looked like the 1940s Jap stereotype, but there you go.

Gloria Starr - Global Image, Etiquette, Communication and Leadership Coach
01/17/13, 04:19

It's official. Baleen is now verifiably insane.

Nothing really to do with this realization, and it's not like he's alone, but it's just now officially the "pencils up the nose and underpants on his head" moment. And that's cool.
NRA: Stand and Fight

Oh no! The tribal initiation fetish is being threatened! How will they know we're from the Moar American Than Thou tribe if we don't have guns? Shouldn't we make the counter offer that their nut roasts be banned? If'n I have to go to Thanksgiving one more time and there's a nut roast, I'm going to go on a shooting spree! IT'S ONLY FAIR!

The Relaxed Wife (1957)
01/16/13, 05:40

My grandparents on my dad's side not only slept in separate beds, but they slept in SEPARATE ROOMS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE HOUSE. The fact that they were both on their second marriage and that they didn't care about anything but maintaining that marriage, regardless of how unhappy it was, was most of it.

My grandparents on my mom's side were divorced in the early 60s and had both been on multiple divorces by the time I got around. My parents got divorced. My grandfather on that side didn't even intend on telling my grandmother, and the court notice came a day early and he hadn't even packed yet. Rather than making a deal about it, he just packed some clothes in a suitcase and left, and they never spoke again. This was a man who had started life as a millionaire, reduced to nothing but a suitcase and a reboot.

I don't get monogamy. I have no context for it as practical.

I've been saying it for years: outlaw guns, make swordplay a legal possibility for settling disputes. It would be illegal to use a sword on an unwilling person, but if we bring duelling back as a possibility, the more lunkheaded sectors of society will kill each other off fighting over Facebook slights and the rest of us can go on with our lives.*

*Also, it would be a good idea to make it perfectly legal to shoot a Nerf ball at a public figure with no legal repurcussions whatsoever. 99% of gun nuts fantasize about shooting politicians they don't like, so give them an out to do so with no actual violence as a way to release pressure AND make a really instantaneous point about a public figure's particular demographics in a highly visual way.

Larry Ward To CNN: If Blacks Had Guns, They Never Would Have Been Slaves
01/14/13, 03:35

We harp on guns because hillbillies FREAK THE FUCK OUT when you poke at that one specific subject, and let's face it, it's really, really, really fun to freak hillbillies out. You're like the kid in the class who never fails to show a reaction when you poke him.

Most "soul food" that has survived to the present day is adapted forms of Native American/African fusion cuisine that was taken up to make use of the offal and scraps that were scavenged as a regular part of the slave diet. Also, the prevalence of chicken in the soul food culture is because chickens were largely self-sufficient in their feed, able to forage for themselves, and thus didn't produce a drain on the grain supply.

That white Southerners also accept soul food as their own is largely due to the Scots-Irish influence of "redneck" culture, as the same parts of the animal that were given to slaves were pretty much the same parts of the animal given to the defaultees of the Highland Clearances.
Glenn Beck talks about building Theme Park: 'Independence Park'
01/13/13, 03:32

Why is the end goal of every conservative crackpot's rise and subsequent fall always to terminate in an amusement park? Is it that amusement parks represent to them the ultimate of capitalist success or is it the vaguely fascist desire to make a defined space of land succomb absolutely to your every ideological whim, up to and including the attempts at reeducating your "guests" to conform?

Because that's pretty much what Walt Disney was all about.
