Blacks are Selling Themselves into Slavery By Supporting the Democratic Party
09/22/12, 18:34

Gay people can have their rights and equality, as long as they don't love, marry, raise children, or in any way let people know they are gay. Just like black people can have their rights as long as they don't vote, drink from the whites only water-fountains, act equal to white people, and cake on the makeup.

Since nearly 1 in 5 pregnancies naturally self-terminate, sometimes even before the woman knows she's pregnant, I guess that would mean that God doesn't want people "killing" babies in the womb because he doesn't like competition.

He's loud, crude and annoying. And very funny. And "detestable shit-stain" should be reserved for people who actually harm others, not comedians you don't like.

Patty's an open lesbian and Selma's the man-chaser. Either ROUS saw an episode I haven't heard of or he's reading some subtext into episodes I'm not sure was intended.

The clip had a few good lines, but was too on-the-nose.

I don't expect Jon Stewart to offer specific policy plans to fix America for the same reason I didn't George Carlin. They are both smart and insightful stand-up comedians, not politicians.

He is a Democrat, like me, but you seem to have your own views on what Democrats are and believe that your transferring. I've never heard Jon say that rich people are bad and it's us against them, nor would I say it. I'm well-off enough that my taxes will likely rise after Obama is elected, and I'm not a hypocrite for being fine with that, or for criticizing those who support unaccountable corporate welfare but consider a penny spent on stopping children from going hungry or dying of preventable diseases to be a waste.

The "us vs. them" framework you're using is incredibly simplistic. People within a system can criticize a system. Media figures can criticize the media, politicians can criticize politicians. You aren't actually pointing out any hypocrisy, unless you think Stewart says "media is bad because it's media" rather than "specific media figures and organizations have caused harm through these practices".
Daily Show - The Entitlement Society

I think you're really out on a limb here.

Jon doesn't speak populist "us vs them" rhetoric in terms of the poor and rich, not in this clip, and not generally that I've noticed. He's primarily a media critic, calling them out on double-standards.

His specific complaint here is that some people rich and poor complain that when they get benefits, they are deserved, but when others others get benefits they are parasites sucking up entitlements. A rich person who gets tax breaks but doesn't automatically judge others who get similar breaks isn't criticized, while a poor person who demands their medicare but considers student loans socialism, is. It's not about income = bad, it's about hypocrisy from those who operate only in self-interest and build their worldview around that.

" Yeah, rich people are bastards... so? So we set up a market-hostile system..."

What fucking show are you watching? That's nothing Stewart has complained about or advocated. You seem to be inferring your own meanings to what he says by lumping Stewart into a 'class warfare' group. You're suggestion that they haven't reported critically on Obama's continuation of Bush civil liberty violations and military presence is wrong, although there are many obvious reasons why it's not as critically discussed now by any news source, than it was when the wars were started and escalating and the redefinition of our rights began.
Educating the Atheist.

God stretched the firmament over the earth. The firmament being a dome with holes that let in rain and the earth being young, flat, on pillars, and orbited by the sun.

Now, if you if ignore absolutely all of that except "stretched", and then rewrite it to mean "continuously expanding", then yes, the Bible does say that.

Sad part is that even if you interpret some parts of the Old Testament as accurate, it doesn't help. Other cultures incorporated guesses or observations into their creations stories which were also accurate. It's like looking at that X-Files episode which predicted 9/11, and assuming Mulder and the Lone Gunmen are real.
Lack of Belief in Gods
09/21/12, 16:46

The problem being that this is also true of leprechauns, the Sandman and Neverland. Yet saying "I don't know and neither do you" would be considered silly for any of those invented and completely unevidenced claims. If a claim isn't founded on evidence, it's literally made up, and if there's no science which makes the concept even plausible, then it's an implausible lie/fiction. One that could turn out to be true, but shouldn't be believed until there's reason to.

It doesn't really matter what the label you use is, as long as the ideas are sound. But the fact that people think disbelieving in God is offensive and arrogant in a way that isn't true for other unevidenced supernatural claims, shows that the people most insistent on their being 'open-minded' are in fact operating from within loaded assumptions.

"We're going to try something new. We're going to work a little harder."

Oh, that's what it takes to turn underfunded schools with developmentally challenged and abused/neglected kids into successes? Why didn't we think of it before!

"You know those mothers who lift one-ton trucks off their babies? They're nothing compared to me."

Hear that moms? The reason your child is struggling in school is because you don't love them enough to make the effort. It certainly has nothing to do with the fact that Maggie Gyllenhaal appears to be a poor single mom with tons of free time instead of three jobs.

Also, a baby under a one-ton weight is already dead. But then I'm sure Maggie's love will bring it back to life, unlike all those wuss moms whose kids stay dead because they didn't care enough.

Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry interviewed on the Ten Commandments
09/17/12, 23:15

Yeah, way too often in these discussions even the atheists accept the premise. It's a commonly held totally absurd claim.

Most of the commandments have no relevance to western law or civilization, they're about religious rituals and only worshiping that God. The only two useful ones (don't murder or steal) weren't exactly new concepts. All cultures have them without a 10 Commandments involved. And the ones about not coveting or lying or working on Sunday aren't law and shouldn't be.
Do 'atheists' know that God exists?
09/17/12, 22:59

Even if you do separate out Hell and support for slavery, genocide, and abuse of women, Jesus still is unimpressive as a moral philosopher, even with the stuff that was cribbed directly from earlier Greeks.

People hear "blessings to the meek" and "blessed be the peacemakers", and how we need to feed and clothe the poor, and assume it's good and sensible. But the details matter.

Jesus doesn't just support the meek and peacemakers, he says that injustice and oppression on earth can be ignored since we should focus on the afterlife. He doesn't just say to care for the poor, but that we should all be poor, and get rid of our possessions since wealth stops us from getting into heaven. He says to love one another, but that you should hate any family member that stands between you and God and consider all human connections unimportant in comparison. Even the parable about casting the first stone is a later addition, Jesus was all in favor of stone-throwing. Even compared to other religions at the time, there's a lot that unwise or immoral.

Romney's thoughts on Obama voters
09/17/12, 21:10

My 'favorite' part is when he admits he has no plan to turn the economy around or pay for his upper-class tax cuts, he just assumes his election will give rich people hope and they'll invest in the economy making everything better.

Like the end of Atlas Shrugged, he sincerely believes rich people are hiding their money and the productivity they give out of fear of the communist Obama regime, and all we need to do is give them control of government and country will prosper again.

Romney's statement on the Libyan Embassy attacks
09/12/12, 19:20

It's a stumble that reflects their desperate style of attacks over policy, fear and anger over solutions, a far-right narrative over inconvenient facts. They haven't bothered issuing a correction or apologizing for falsely claiming the tweet came from the White House, came after the attacks, or didn't defend freedom of speech (in other words, his entire criticism). Even after Republicans roundly criticized them, the campaign just recently advised doubling down on attacks and continuing the lie rather than showing weakness.

That said, I don't think this is a single event that dooms him. He's not out of the race, it's still much closer than most elections. It's just reflective of how it is that a billionaire who's been preparing for decades for the perfect chance and is backed by a propaganda empire with nearly unlimited money, still managed to mismanage his election.

He really does feel 'entitled' to this. So much so he thinks he's under no obligation to provide policy specifics, to release his taxes, to provide a new way forward, or to in any way connect with voters and adjust himself to what they need. He's been working for this for decades, and since he's never been denied anything in his life, hasn't realized he can't have what he hasn't earned.
