Rizzo: Hell, McCain won't even mention Ayers in front of Obama or on non-conservative media. He knows it looks desperate and sleazy to everyone but his base. But McCain is directly responsible for his ads, and what his representatives say. Check out the ad in the Hopper. Or McCain's appearance on Hannity today, when he says Obama is friends with terrorists, and we don't know how far his connections run.
None of the other Democrats and Republicans who worked in Chicago with Ayers have been accused of being terrorists. This is all about his "bloodlines", and painting someone 'different' as scary and foreign.
Hooker: Yeah, ideological neo-conservatism is very term from the terms colloquial use. The same is true of many political labels. In this case, people associate the Bush neo-con policies, with the culture war issues he used to rally support.

The campaign and its surrogates have been abandoned substantive issues in order to feed into xenophobia, suggesting that Obama isn't "like us". He's not a "real American", his name is Hussein, he lived in foreign places, his wife hates America, etc. These attacks are used to feed into the myth of his being a Muslim terrorist. Palin in her speeches accused Obama of undermining the troops to the point of their deaths, appeasing Iran, beings friends with terrorists, and concludes by saying she's "fearful" of such a man getting control of the Presidency.
That McCain tries to keep these attacks at arms length is no excuse. Palin is told what to say, and her speeches have outright accused Obama of not being American, conspiring with terrorists, and treason. McCain only serves as the legitimate face of it, in asking "Who is Barack Obama really, and why isn't he putting country first?" When he hears the cries back of "Terrorist" and "Traitor", its no surprise. Its a strategy build on radicalizing people, and playing into the very worst parts of human nature.

Words have consequences.
McCain's legacy after over 30 years of service is going to be fanning the flames of bigotry and hatred, legitimizing smears by association, reviling education and intelligence, defining people in small, rural, god-fearing towns as the only real Americans, conflating questioning a war with hating the country and troops, and lowering the bar even further on what qualifies as ready for the Presidency.

I think the point you are (intentionally) missing, is that being in the same city poverty initiative group with a guy isn't having a beer with him. Unless those planning committees are way more fun than I thought. And for every crazy or criminal that Obama's run into, McCain has several more advising him.

Ayers worked as an education and poverty adviser in Chicago, at a time that Obama was working on those issues. They worked on a committee together, and Ayers contributed to his campaign. Obama's never said a word to excuse those activities that happened when he was eight years old, nor has he ever endorsed the man.
By those same standards McCain is a friend of Nazi's, pedophiles and terrorists. Oh, and McCain's Medicare plans would make him Kevorkian's best friend.

This was followed by supporters shouting "Kill him!" and "Traitor!" at Palin rallies when she linked Obama to terrorism. And this is even after the press were sequestered away, not just from Palin, but her supporters.
Stars of Evil for McCain's disappointed look, followed by his plowing ahead anyway. The guy chose to stay in a POW camp, but couldn't get through a Presidential election without selling out his principles and honor.
