Suing the Devil (2011) - Trailer
08/06/11, 18:53

Did you know that KISS stands for Knights in Satan's Service? And if you play 'Imagine' backwards, it says "Hail Satan", while "Maybe I'm Amazed" backwards is a recipe for a demonic soup made from lentils.

That nice young man fighting evil in God's name is being accused of racism and browsing internet porn!

So just remember that whenever those hippie freaks accuse you or those nice Godly Republicans in Congress of racial and sexual hypocrisy, they are really working for the Devil.

According to Gallup, Americans self-report that 41% of them attend church weekly, and only 8% say never. When looking at actual attendance, that figure changes to 21% attend weekly, and 40% less than once a year, or never.

That's an indicator of how church attendance has dropped in general. I'm not sure what the basis is for saying it increased among the rich but not the working class.

Jon Stewart on the Ground Zero Cross Lawsuit
08/05/11, 20:10

No, he was saying that revering the cross as divine intervention is logically inconsistent. Why would an omnipotent and benevolent not change the world to stop slaughter, yet change the world in order to leave his mark? Like how people will credit God for every person saved from a disaster, but not blame him for every one lost. It's Epicurus in a nutshell.

The American Atheists have specifically compared this one to the Ground Zero mosque, where they support the right to build a religious building. Not because they favor Islam, but because both the cross and banning the mosque are examples of Christians wanting to use government to mark ground zero as sacred to their faith to the exclusion of others. If the cross was displayed in a private memorial, there'd be no problem.

He wasn't being sarcastic to be mean, he was being rhetorical to make a point. Now if you're saying that it's offensive to people of faith and he said it in a dickish manner, I'll agree. But I'll guarantee that the Tea Party felt at least as outraged when Jon mocked their suggestion that the area where loved ones died was "sacred ground". Let alone how he trivializes their beliefs in protecting the unborn. As Jon would probably be the first to say, it's fine for people to be offended. But if he's speaking a truth that matters, that's no reason to shut up.

Every religious icon the government erects is subject to the Lemon test (insert old dick jokes here) to test for signs of endorsement or excessive entanglement. I think that the cross probably is an acceptable display under current constitutional standards. But it has to be examined and decided, rather than have any discussion about the civil rights of a minority shouted down by an impassioned majority.

I can understand why John has that reaction. But then I understand when local towns get outraged when the ACLU comes in and says they need to take down their 10 Commandments. That doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do.

The whole "why not think of it as a metal t shaped thingy" is just a dumb argument though. Jon wouldn't accept "pretend it's a plus sign" when he's standing before it in a courtroom. There's no reason to pretend that the government erecting a cross as a memorial is just "an interesting coincidence".
Sinead O'Connor performs 'War' on SNL
08/05/11, 03:08

In a related matter, Sinead O'Connor was placed in a "Magdalene Asylum" as a young girl for shoplifting. I strongly advise not looking it up unless you are in the mood for nightmare fuel.

These places essentially jails/mental institutions for those who didn't conform (including those who weren't religious or considered promiscuous), run entirely by the church and outside the law. They were centers of abuse and child labor. They had been around for 200 years, Ireland only began to pay attention to them shortly after this aired, and they were shut down completely three years later.

Okay, long rant over now.
Sinead O'Connor performs 'War' on SNL

When she tore up the photo of the Pope in protest of child abuse, she was pilloried by the media and basically run out of Ireland on a rail. On the opening of the next SNL "host Joe Pesci held up the photo, explaining that he had taped it back together, which gained applause. Pesci also said that if it had been his show, 'I would have gave her such a smack'."

In retrospect she was totally right, and Ireland is only now slowly coming to grips with precisely how much child rape was done as a direct result of our holding church officials above criticism or supervision. SNL approved everything about the performance, except she substituted a picture of a child with the pope. Maybe it was dishonest, but that seems like such a small concern in the face of a brave and moral act. It's easy to forget that we take the ability to freely criticize and speak out against the church in part due to actions like that.

"One of a kind". Oh, how I wish that were true.

The manipulation of kids is just heart-breaking. "You need to do what I say, and believe what I say, or you are a bad person, your parents won't love you, and you'll be tortured forever. Thinking for yourself is forbidden, only obey."

As the Daily Show once pointed out, Gretchen Carlson is a Stanford/Oxford grad who graduated cum laude. She consistently pretends to be a simple-minded Christian soccer mom as cynical appeal/manipulation of her audience.

In this case she does it by pretending Spongebob is far too complicated for her tiny female mind to follow, and all this science stuff is fuzzying up her Jesus loving brain.

What's truly sad is that, while he's a deluded hypocritical douchebag, he's still more honest and sane than our biggest news channel.

He's saying "He was influenced by the right, but was basically just a suicidal nutjob" while failing to apply that standard to anyone not white, Christian or right-wing.

Fox denied that the shooter was even influenced by the right and blamed Islam and socialism, saying things like "How do we know he actually attended church?"

"The thing that pisses off conservatives and libertarians most is the double standards when it comes to race and multiculturalism."

By double standards, he means that there's one in which people support diversity and equality, and another in which white "European" Christian Americans dictate the agenda as God and their superior "culture" (wink) intended. And he's sick of having more than one standard.

Teachers need pay cuts, slashed benefits and job insecurity even when they do well in a broken system, for incentives.

Sorry, you think 24-year old men ever get rich from web startups? Or that they can't be supported by rich parents while running a website as a business? That this is something that simply never happens? Is that the consensus from the planet you live on?

For fuck's sake, the website is listed directly above. What kind of conspiracy is being implied here? Since it's a rap tournament organization, would his story be plausible if he were a 'hip-hop producer and promoter' but becomes impossible if it's 'CEO of online media marketing'?
