Rand Paul on Rachel Maddow

"A free society will abide unofficial, private discrimination, even when that means allowing hate-filled groups to exclude people based on the color of their skin."

- Rand Paul (2002)

"society as a whole and the free market"
I hear that sort of phrase repeated a lot by libertarians, as a magic cure to any and all ills. Just this year, we heard a story about a community pool that banned black kids, because the white residents there thought they were "dirty". And while that situation was addressed, there are many more cases we don't hear about.

If there's some sort of proof that "society and the free market" would address the situation so thoroughly as to create no need for the law, I'd be glad to hear it. But when it comes to discrimination, of all issues, I'd think there's an interest in the government making a statement against it, even if it weren't going on.
Starcraft 2 Beta: Unbeatable Protoss 1v1 Strategy
05/18/10, 18:56

This is a case of sitting through 7 minutes of nonsense, just for a final one-word punchline.

Still worth it.
Battlestar Galactica: Bad Commercial Placement

Its been a long time since I submitted this, but I seem to recall that I found it on a blog and submitted it the day after the episode aired.
Dale Peterson for Alabama Agriculture Commission
05/17/10, 19:22

If I thought for a second that he meant what he said, that taking money from the people you regulate is wrong and illegal, I'd vote for him. But chances are he's taking even more money from the same groups, and using it to pay an Ad-man who tells him that if he hides behind powerful symbols and acts like John Wayne, he can lie all he wants.
NCIS 'Power Down' Episode opening.
05/17/10, 18:35

"The power outage was just so they could replace the hardware without any flags going up, and to throw people off of their goal."

Ah, so their riddling an internet provider with bulletholes and getting in a shootout with guards was the subtle maneuver meant to avoid detection? Clever.
THE WEED DOCTOR IS IN!

Imagine the person using it was your surgeon, your waiter, a bomb squad technician.

Still think pogo sticks are harmless?

Vote for me, or I'll shoot you like the cowardly dogs you are. And it won't be a mercy killing brought on by your pitiful state. No, I'll give you the slow gut shot death that traitors deserve.

Pokemon Live Action Movie - The Mysterious Virus
05/17/10, 12:50

If you ignore the production values, I'm willing to bet this is genuinely better than any of the official Pokemon movies.
The Rapture - You NEED To See This
05/17/10, 01:30

There's something incredibly crass about mixing in shitty Michael Bay movies with actual footage of 9/11 and people dying. Although it is highly reflective of the thought-processes involved.

Question: Why is the Rapture movement so focused on events preceding and following the Rapture, particularly natural disasters and conspiracy theories involving the UN, microchip, the Mark of the Beast, politicians, etc?

If you believe you'll be saved, then you'll be in heaven and your not effected. If you think you won't be saved, then surely after God reveals himself, you'd spent every waking minute praying, and not caring whether we've adopted the Euro and elected a Democrat, because you are guaranteed that there is an afterlife, and that no matter what you or anyone else does, you will shortly be dead. This is the one time in human history when you should be completely unconcerned with material events and dangers.

This line is the film's crowning moment. And nicely summarizes my position toward most of Adam Sandler's works.
Michelle Bachmann: Drill Here, Drill Now
05/16/10, 16:17

We also have Al Franken and Keith Ellison. And unless you're from a particularly tiny state, I doubt that you don't have at least one embarassing House member.

"Wonderful, refreshing point of clarity" = Unprecedented oil spill it will cost taxpayers billions to clean up?

"American innovation" = 16th century techniques of blowing up mountains and burning coal?
Parents react to the internet reaction to the 9 year olds performing 'Single Ladies'.
05/16/10, 11:24

He's admitting. Both parents try and claim that from their perspective it wasn't sexualized or a stupid idea, but they never try and provide a defense for how it looks objectively.

Aside from blaming the Chipettes (which I'm all for), the parents put all the blame on the 8 year-old girls. Those girls didn't design and make the stripper uniforms, and even if they did, as parents its their job to say no. If there was a parenting exam, saying "Well its in the media, and she wanted it, so really I did nothing wrong it getting it for her" should be an automatic fail.

Metroid Prime: The 'Citizen Kane' of Gaming?
05/15/10, 19:41

A great film, and a game that still a lot of fun to play.

Whether you like them is a matter of taste, but neither could reasonably be called mediocre. If you're the kind of person who'll avoid movie based on length, or a lack of action, then don't watch Citizen Kane. If you only play twitch shooters or games that don't require patience and thinking, don't play Metroid Prime.

Toy Story + Dark Knight Trailer Mashup
05/15/10, 14:43

And most of those good ones do involve Toy Story 2. Meanwhile I'm stuck thinking how much better the movies would be if Michael Caine was the voice of Rex.
He Sold His Soul to the Devil: Then God Stepped In
05/15/10, 14:38

I don't think having a metal singer in a thriving metal band get a contract is proof of selling ones soul. In the name of scientific inquiry, I'll attempt the same thing, while having no musical talent or ability. If I get offered a contract, I'll report back.

I'm grabbing that audio sample for TF2. I don't even play TF2, but now I clearly have to start.
