Gov Rick Perry Signs Religious Freedoms Bill
06/18/13, 01:02

"...I mean it does mean freedom from Islam and all those wacky religions, but it doesn't mean freedom from Christianity!

...I mean it does mean freedom from all those socialist hippie open-border peace loving versions of Christianity, but it doesn't mean freedom from MY version of Christianity!"
Shepherding Your Sons Sexually

Remember, don't set goals for yourself, and you'll end up as successful as God wants you to be. Unlike that miserable failure, Bill Clinton.

Yeah. The woman also seems to have trouble articulating. She's fine in other videos, so maybe she just had a root canal or something.

You know if they weren't aware they had competitors, that would explain a lot.
David Mitchell's Top 10 Unseen Funniest Moments
06/10/13, 01:08

This whole thing was filmed with contempt.

Which means Google hired some ad people to promote YouTube, who hired some smart people, who figured this whole thing was shit so let's take their money and not tarnish our reputation by taking it seriously or even trying.
The Starving Games: A Parody Movie
06/10/13, 00:52

Prior to that, it seemed like a bad lazy comedy spoof. As soon as they started with the references, it just became something not comedy.

I don't mean bad or lazy, I mean "There is nothing identifiable as an attempt at a joke". It's just showing things which could be used in jokes, but aren't.
Bryan Fischer - What holds the atomic nucleus together?

"If that's how you want to invoke your evidence for god, then god is an ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance."
Vice: White Student Union
06/09/13, 17:06

I am fairly certain the time he so desperately wants to return to doesn't exist.

His defense against racism is "I also dislike and oppose white people who don't think like me in terms of politics and religion." He's just built up in his imagination that there was a golden era responsible for everything good when everyone thought like him, and he was entitled to have others agree with him and praise him.
Vice: White Student Union
06/09/13, 17:04

He thinks his "night patrol" is a brilliant PR move (Who could oppose safety and stopping criminals? This just proves his black critics promote crime!), but he just comes across as the creepy lovechild of Dwight Shrute and George Zimmerman.

Sure it's non-violent and calls the cops... when the cameras are there. But one dust-up with a black student, and the next night they'll be carrying guns and looking for people in hoodies.

Of course their system of measuring attractiveness claims that a '7' would only be considered hot by a few if they fit a niche.

So the majority of their scale isn't considered attractive. Their priorities involve putting down women as too ugly to fuck, and going for women who are out of their league, so they can get bitter and blame them for being bitches, rather than have to deal with a relationship.
Is Math a Feature of the Universe or a Feature of Human Creation?
06/06/13, 17:52

Harriet, you missed the point by a mile. No one is claiming that math is unreliable, or that the properties it's describing don't exist. Rather than it's a tool of understanding objective properties of reality, rather than a property itself.

It's like topographical maps, or the light spectrum, or language, a system we invent to help our minds analyze and solve things which don't rely on human minds to exist, but isn't such a thing itself. It describes reality, which doesn't imply it's untrue or unreliable just because we recognize it as a description.
The Onion - 'The Internship' Poised To Be Biggest Comedy Of 2005

They're often great when it's just a regular news/celebrity report, with only the slightest bit of extra honesty needed to make it a farce.
Is Math a Feature of the Universe or a Feature of Human Creation?
06/05/13, 17:56

Not meant as a reply, so I'll just add, fuck Plato. Or rather those who repeated the doctrines of smarter Greeks rather than expand on or challenge them, for thousands of years.
Is Math a Feature of the Universe or a Feature of Human Creation?

It's a reasonable point, decently made. But I was burned out on the memes less than halfway in.

I shudder to think that this kind of insane ADD pop culture reference presentation is needed to keep modern kids paying attention. It's like if you loaded Buffy up on Ritalen and introduced her to reddit.
Lou Dobbs is horrified to learn that some women are making more money than their husbands
05/30/13, 18:40

It's the same exact argument made against homosexuality, by people who hold science in contempt trying to use it without understanding it.

"In nature it's the male and the female, and that's what we have to do because of science!"

"Actually nearly all species engage in same-sex sexual activities, few have life-long monogamous partners, and of those that do same sex child-rearing partnerships have been observed. Plus science itself is a process different from what animals do, there's no basis for saying we have to be like them in one particular respect."

"That's not how my God made things! Must be all that diet soda and MTV turning the animals queer!"
Lou Dobbs is horrified to learn that some women are making more money than their husbands
05/30/13, 18:21

Lou Dobbs starts the discussion by blaming Obama for the disintegration of society and praising the "appropriate investigation" of scandals by Republicans.

There is zero follow up on how this relates at all to the topic.

He then mentions how children don't survive because of Roe v Wade, and what is the impact and how this effects high school drop outs.

Richard Dawkins baffled by stupidity
05/28/13, 00:08

He still does. The Greatest Show on Earth was a very good book explaining evolution, and he wrote a kids book on skepticism last year.

With that said, we don't accept the idea that people who challenge bad political systems or beliefs are wasting their time by not doing science, nor is that any different when challenging religion. It's just that people who don't like what he says will defend two priests arguing over what God says as "exploring spirituality", while questioning whether he's speaking is a 'waste of time'.

If trying to combat creationism, it's more important to challenge religious entitlement than explain the science, because the people who reject it generally aren't doing so because it hasn't been explained, but because society and their culture tells them to. And even if one disagrees, it doesn't mean we shouldn't try doing both.
Richard Dawkins baffled by stupidity
05/27/13, 20:15

Well it turns out some people are so insecure about religion being taken seriously, that they'll look for opportunities to undermine and belittle those doing the questioning regardless of whether it relates at all to what is being said.

And I'm not referring to those scientists if that's at all unclear. Because the first link isn't what you claimed, it's a respectful departure, and the second is just Dawkins and a scientist disagreeing on the role of kin selection.
Wretched: Noah's ark actually existed.
05/26/13, 14:08

Okay, so let's ignore that God said to bring 7 pairs for clean animals and 2 pairs for clean, let's ignore the fact that plants, insects and birds and seawater creatures would die outside the ark (since rain is freshwater), let's use genus rather than family or species just for the hell of it, let's assume a standard size for animals ignoring dinosaurs even though I just put them on screen, let's ignore the actual dietary and space needs they'd have for a year at sea, and then let's assume they evolved like crazy in a few hundred years but hid their fossils to look like slow evolution.

This is way more reasonable than the atheist explanation for music! Because music is mysterious to everyone, while the atheist explanation for biodiversity makes our claims look like delusions a child can see through.
The Xbox One Experience!
05/25/13, 16:23

To be fair, I used to do that in college. I had a split-screen TV where I'd listen to a show on one half, watch the game and play it on the other. There was usually music in the apartment and people talking.

That said, the fact that I could do this with a CRT and a Gamecube just shows unimpressive all this innovation is. Plus I only did that for games which didn't require much attention, like Mario Kart. For a game I actually wanted to focus on, like Eternal Darkness, these things are just distractions.

Since I can do everything the Xbox advertises on my phone now EXCEPT immersive gaming, you think they'd make that a priority.
