A lot of that was revenge, and exploitation of that by Germany. And a lot of what led to WW2 was fear of another, similar war by politicians who couldn't conceive of leading their countries into another war. WW2 was much worse for civilians, but you can see it as one continuous conflict with a 20 year gap.

But WWI was the thing that made clear, "literally millions of men will die for no reason."
