I grew up in precisely the area that they drove through. I've driven through Bagdad countless times, and I'd wager that I've even stopped at that very gas station. I am not surprised in the slightest by what happened. I personally know (knew) people who have been murdered for less.
It is a miserable, poisonous place teeming with violent, irrational people. |

As I already said, the appearances cannot be a significant source of income or publicity for obvious reasons. Therefore, these people must actually *want* to be on the show. So the equation actually is: If a lot of funny people are tripping over themselves to appear on a show that can't offer them any form of compensation *other* than the simple pleasure of participating in something they enjoy and admire, then you can bet your shiny pink ass it's funny--or, at the very least, that you are not at all qualified to say it's not.
There's a reason top-tier chefs wouldn't dare serve the food that they themselves prefer to eat. |

The original song only included the first stanza and seemed to convey a sense of hopefulness about the country's apparent shift towards more humanistic policies. The "rising tide" and "landslide" in the refrain originally represented the then overwhelming and palpable desire for significant change. The additions to the song, however, bemoan the apathy and disillusionment that characterize our current political climate and designate the "high tide" as something that now belongs to resentful populists. Hence "a mob is a democracy," etc. |
