Hey Kubrick had his Eyes Wide Shut, Spielberg had his Indy 4 and Coppola had Godfather part III. Pixar's not flawless...Brad Bird is so far though. |

CD: Yes the line "If everyone's special, no one is" could very well come out of Rand's mouth, and probably did, but I don't think you can really throw the rest of the film in the waste basket because of its philosophy. There's a lot to that film that makes it great, and better than most any Disney film. Characters (complex and well developed), realistic and adult dialogue, complex views of family life, work ethics, life ethics, etc.
Maybe the core theme of the film is "Randroidian" but at least it's an interesting concept for kids to think about in an abstract way. It's better than the usual believe in yourself and save the princess isn't it?
fluffy: Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. And yeah, I'd love to see Pixar move into 2D or Live action, if only to prove that they're not successful because they have a CG gimmick. |

They did drop their 2D art departments but their management really has no idea what they're doing other than making money. They just noticed that Pixar's films were selling better so they realized that obviously that meant it was because they were 3D. So they fired all their 2D artists that couldn't transition to 3D and sold all their 2D equipment and switched over to full CG. (This was a big deal when I was going to art school, since half my class wanted to go into 2D after graduation, and this seemed like a death knell to 2D animation.)
So then of course when their 3D films didn't sell either they were completely confused and I guess decided to go back to making 2D princess cartoons again (and probably begged many of their better 2D artists who had left and started their own companies to come back). Somehow completely missing the fact that Pixar has yet to make a princess film and in fact sells tickets because they write amazing stories and talk to their audience instead of down to them.
But they know marketing and so you have a black (but not too black) princess and frog who can now be made into millions of toys to sell to children to make up for the lack of money they'll make off actual tickets and DVDs to their mediocre, over tested, over marketed, overly safe glorified toy commercial. |
