Shareware games were usually level based. Doom shareware was the first 6-7 levels of Doom, and if you liked it, you could pay $30 for the rest of it. Games today are not really episodic in nature so this business model doesn't really work. It would be cool though if there was some kind of Renaissance and people made more old school type games and released shareware. I think Steam may even have a hand in that since they often sell complete games for under $5 so people are more willing to take a risk on a game they have never played if the screenshots look cool. |
