It didn't used to be this bad. Cable TV > 24 hour news networks > filling time with bullshit & "expert opinions" on situations that may or may not be occuring > people thinking that's a legitimate way to give and receive information.
The sad thing is that it's a big planet and there is at least 24 hours worth of real news to report, it's just expensive to do it right. They could also fill time with long-form stuff, like the little documentaries PBS & NPR do.
But the fact that the only media sources that do that sort of thing rely on funding that isn't tied to ratings should tell you something.
Look at the tightly-controlled cesspool of diggbait that your average blog has become. The problem is us. |

I did enjoy the story, btw, it was just outrageous enough that I was worried it was going to turn out to be fake.
I went on some retreats and pilgrimages and things (willingly, even)...nothing on the level of NCYC, although I did hang out with some guys who would go to those things. They had a strange intensity. By contrast, the guys in the order hosting us were all pretty laid back. |
