What would Darwin say to today's creationists?
08/26/10, 16:09 He would go nuts over the cache of fossils we've dug up. They not only provide some last-minute, incontrovertible proof for a theory that didn't need it, but also show the existence of creatures that no one even dreamed of. He missed out on Mendelian genetics. Perhaps most importantly, he missed out on DNA.
He wouldn't be surprised by the opposition. He was mocked, along with Wallace, Lamarck, and many others for daring to suggest that species are mutable (let alone commonly derived).
Still, I bet he'd be disappointed that it's stuck around so long. That so many deny our origins, even after this many years. He saw common descent as beautiful and awe-inspiring, and in his letters he sort of assumes that eventually the world would feel the same.
She touches on a lot of this in the lecture. I hope people are watching it instead of commenting on the title. |

What would Darwin say to today's creationists?
08/23/10, 03:15 (and yes I am jerking off even as I cry for Palestine)
Final note: I think Gerardus Bouw was a sort of sparring partner for a professor I had. The prof wrote a philosophy of science book that was largely centered around history's changing understanding of planetary motion. He also shepherded the astronomy club, and was a cartographer in his spare time. Dude was the Ali of arguing about the earth. |

What would Darwin say to today's creationists?
08/23/10, 02:58 The neat stuff here is all of the distinction that she's able to make, such as: opposition to natural selection vs opposition to common descent; passively mistrusting evolution or actively pushing, say, flood geology; ID as a strict subset of creationism... it's almost taxonomic :) |
