Goodbye Ward Parkway Mall
11/26/14, 20:47

Bannister just got bought by Cerner (Borg-like medical software company), who's going to put in a campus there.

I think the mall as a concept is just plain dead. The maintenance/upkeep on these facilities with all their empty open spaces for people to walk that have to be climate controlled and kept looking decent isn't cheap. Ergo, rent isn't cheap, and the stores' wares usually aren't low enough to warrant a trip. They also relied upon a lot of niche stores that required the rest of the mall to be healthy to survive, so when Hallmark can't even get enough biz to stick around, everyone that isn't a big box is probably going to pull up stakes.

There used to be a Blue Ridge Mall out East of KC on I-70. The last things to go before it was torn down to make a Wal-Mart shopping center was a Pretzel Time, a no-name hamburger stand, an antique mall in the basement, and a detached Applebee's. I think the movie theater became some kind of "hip" youth ministry before it was demolished.

Let me know when one of those white open-carry guys bringing loaded AR-15's into convenience stores get shot and I'll say you've got a point.

"That's why they fuck with the poor and powerless so much and in this country, blacks are more likely to be poor and powerless."

I'd also find it hi-larious to see which people are being racist assholes about the rioting (and the protests for that matter) and post things about armed insurrection against the federal government.

I'm not sure I "hated" it per se. I just think it came off as half-improvised, half-unfinished, and... well, kind of disjointed. I'm all for practical effects, but for the world's foremost toymaker, he sure had a lot of wind-up stuff you could find in most high-end "collectible" toy stores. I'm not saying they should've CGI'ed up the joint, but there wasn't much of a payoff for his supposed genius other than his android sister, and that was Star Trek level FX (not to mention kind of cliche).

It's been a while, but I don't recall the purpose for the operating room scene where the walls kind of closed in on them as they "worked." Then there was the elephant thing at the end where you saw it hoisted by a helicopter over the end credits for no apparent reason.

There's a reason it's mostly famous for Williams standing out in a field for one of the promos, and that was probably only well-known because The Simpsons satirized it.

The music is from the movie "Toys." Good soundtrack, BTW. Weird-ass movie that seemed like a dress rehearsal for a movie that never got filmed.

Anyway, I'm not sure if this guy isn't jumping the gun. Ward Parkway Mall isn't in any danger of going under, at least, not to blight. The place has loads of outer-facing stores, a Target, Dick's, 5 Guys, etc. It's also in a VERY affluent area. If anything gets torn down, it'll be replaced in short order.

Maybe the filmer is a big mall-grief addict and is running out of malls to mourn?

FYI: The Koreans didn't think the cops would help them, so they took to their rooftops with rifles.

Shopping malls do have a distinctive architectural style that seems unlike anything outside of late 70's to early 90's sci-fi city sets. For the most part, they're the shopping equivalent of a mod-style split-level bachelor pad, which just makes them look exceedingly sad after their heyday is over.

The refutations based on gender seem to go:

One woman = she's a golddigger.
Two women = it's a con job.
Three or more women = it's a conspiracy.

I can see why this isn't coming out until now, if it's true. Imagine trying to say someone of Cosby's celebrity status did anything wrong at the height of his media presence, his work in kids' TV, etc.

That said, I didn't watch the Cosby Show much because it all seemed to be recycled parts of his standup routines or just strung-together scenes in a house where everyone had one-liners. It was plot-lite even by sitcom standards.

Having been in the area, this mall is (was?) in a pretty run-down part of the city. The casual racism in the comments aside, it's not a place you wanted to go most evenings. The area has managed to maintain an upper-lower to lower-middle class commercial footprint, as it's got a Home Depot, Kmart, and a bunch of chain restaurants nearby.

The land the mall is on just got bought by this big medical software company that seems to have Borg-like growth, so maybe the Bannister area is in for a bit more rehab.

I find the irony of Glenn Beck being upset about "media rape" ironic enough that it should be causing everyone in the studio physical pain.

Also, regarding his sweatshirt: Mr. Beck, from what I've heard, you are no man from Nantucket.

And to my knowledge, he has never denied either charge. It's awfully suspicious, as if he has something to hide.

Like the 3 Stooges, the Little Rascals, the Lone Ranger, etc.

There are some things that are just products of their time and really can't be effectively remade for a modern age without it being ironic or so retooled you might as well call it something other than the name of the original IP.

That reminds me. I seem to recall that Dreamworks bought the rights to Felix the Cat. Since they're going under, I wonder if anyone else will be stupid enough to try reviving ol' Felix?

Kind of. I always figured he'd do the "let's make a domed city away from the parasites" thing, but in the end, he and everyone's money would be outside of the dome while the sewers inside backed up and everyone blamed Obama.

What happened to his Libertopian fortress-castle-doomkeep thing? I was really hoping to watch his idiotic followers create their own Jonestown, except everyone would have guns.

We've also been deprived of his promised right-wing version of "Glee."

I mean, yeah, mad science-punk takes precedence because it looks like some of that stuff could be used as a bong or two, but still...

I really detest the pro-Keystone rhetoric that talks about it making the U.S. more energy independent.

The oil is Canadian. It's being refined for the world market, which sets the price. The U.S. exports fucktons of gasoline. It makes us as energy independent as refining Saudi oil does.
