Zero Punctuation: The Evil Within
10/31/14, 13:54

Evil Within reminds me that Bethesda STILL hasn't said when they're fucking releasing Fallout 4, dammit!

I also think it's a weird disconnect in some of their minds, because how common is it for someone to say, "I'm gonna kill that boy when he gets home" or "They are SO dead" in a casual context? If one is very literally minded to begin with, there's probably no difference between that and what most people would consider actual threats of violence.

FYI, OZ:

"Varicella zoster virus or varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is one of eight herpesviruses known to infect humans and vertebrates. VZV only affects humans, and commonly causes chickenpox in children, teens and young adults and herpes zoster (shingles) in adults and rarely in children. VZV is known by many names, including chickenpox virus, varicella virus, zoster virus, and human herpesvirus type 3 (HHV-3)."

Because doxxing and death threats sound the same coming from a "virgin shutin" as they do from someone with an itchy trigger finger, so they have to be treated the same.

Don't forget it was one of these "virgin shutins" as you call them that SWATted an online rival of his and then wept like a baby when he was sentenced.

1. That sounds a lot like GamerGate. Loads of them have this definition of "gamer" that is exclusive to AAA-level $60+ games, mostly involving firearms. If you play anything else (including tabletop games/RPGs), you're not a gamer in their eyes, especially if you hold contrasting opinions.

2. What do you think an editorial is? Do you not realize it's separate from news? It's where someone gives their OPINION. If someone's experience is that a segment of people who play vidya games are raging assholes and calls them out on it, that's still an editorial opinion, and grown-ups can take it or leave it.

3. GamerGate has a really weird idea of what "ethics" and "corruption" are. "Ethics" as it's been applied to those they decry (often for relationships/actions that never took place or have any bearing) is never applied to the 800-lb gorilla of corporate incentives to get the reviews they do. See, that would be going after actual documentable payola, but that would require setting GG's sights on EA, BioWare, etc. which they don't seem willing to do. I guess it's because there's no sex involved?

The tabletop RPG industry and the movie industry went through a realization that it was excluding a wider customer base by routinely objectifying women. And before you cry that people are out to remove boobies from games, look at film: Boobies are still there, but it's slowly starting to not be ALL that's there. GG is wrecking the expansion video games into new spaces and into new ideas because anyone pointing out that a lot of product is murder-shooters and giant hooters causes calls of "CORRUPT" and "FIRE THE SJW!"

Shockingly, many people actually believe voter ID laws are about trying to prevent voter fraud, not about being racist privileged pricks to minorities and the poor.

The trouble is, you can't divorce it from the fact that these initiatives were started by racist privileged pricks.

GG is now falling all over itself to say it's all about ethics in gaming journalism, whatever that means. What it doesn't appear to mean is targeting AAA game companies who pass out payola with their business cards. They demand favorable reviews for early access to games and/or ad buys. Is that a problem for GG? Oh, noooooo. They worry about non-existent sex for non-existent reviews, because that lets them photoshop "war" posters and become their own version of the Tea Party all over social media.
Antares Rocket explodes!

I think it's still a bidding process. That said, the engines are a Russian design, the NK-33, which were mothballed in 1974. The NK-33s were refurbished and re-designated by Aerojet Rocketdyne as the AJ26 and sold to Dulles-based Orbital Sciences for use in Antares.

I'm more curious about where the endgame will take place. A lot of actual "make stuff" businesses rely on there being a consumer-based middle class. A lot of megacorps are finally at least paying lip service to the thought that MAYBE slave-wages aren't going to let their bottom lines grow.

On the other hand, we've got shitloads of money (and out-and-out corruption, bribery, taxpayer payouts) going to investment banking and the like which contributes nothing to the economy other than yet another middleman who leeches off of businesses and consumers while making wild bets that fuck things up for everyone. Not to mention corporate entities that exist for no reason other than to play math games with the stock market (again, contributing nothing; it's all just a numbers game where someone gets rich via computer algorithm).

The question seems to be, when will those who are already obscenely wealthy hit a point where the lower classes can't keep their investment gravy-train rolling, unless said oligarchs own the Dollar Store? Money is more fictional than ever (and no, I'm not suggesting precious metals or anything) in that to the uber-rich, their grand totals are meaningless in that they could never spend it all yet the thought of it somehow diminishing, even when they'd never notice, is something they claim is just shy of Nazism.

I think it'll come down to whether or not the wealthy can build a domed fortress somewhere before this system somehow falls apart. I don't see an armed revolution taking place per se, but a full-on swing to corporate feudalism seems in the offing, and that doesn't seem like a system that could last.

In other words, not with a bang or a revolution, but with a balance sheet full of meaningless numbers clutched to a CEO's chest while our infrastructure falls apart.

Don't you just love the marketing of these movies? They market District 1 makeup in my local drug store. In the context of the story, that's like selling the beauty products of Marie Antoinette to pre-revolution France.

And then they've got Hunger Games candy bars. I wonder if the irony of selling fattening foods based on a movie whose foundation is starvation to an already-obese population ever occurred to the people in charge.

It's Hunger Games-inspired stuff to do some kind of science experiment. Unless this is more efficient than a hydroelectric generator or is useful for storing energy from renewable sources (i.e. using solar power to pump water into a reservoir that's then used to run a turbine when the sun goes down), it's little more than a curiosity.

But seriously, enough with the Hunger Games... except it doesn't suck quite as hard as the Maze Runner.

They need to stop all this Young Adult post-apoc crap.

Based on recent (and not-so recent) events, I'd say cops are cat people because they don't give a fuck about you, your stuff, your loved ones, who's right, who's wrong, and would happily murder you for no reason whatsoever.

I thought the whole ISIS connection came about when #ISIS and #GamerGate were trending, bots picked up the hashtags, and the GG'ers claimed that this was an anti-GG plot to equate them with terrorism.

Not that many GG idiots don't still avow ("IT'S BEEN CONFIRMED!!!") the strawman caricatures they claim are trying to wipe them out using bots. Which ignores how bot accounts operate entirely, because that's ideologically handy.

They also have Brietbart, pinnacle of journalistic integrity, to worship as well.

This is what indoctrination truly looks like. People are trying to use GG to gain their own little fiefdom of celebrity and meager power ("Oooh! Let's send form e-mails to a site's sponsors!") or it's an excuse to lash out at everyone and everything that ever "wronged" them since the internet can't hit back.

It's also a sure bet none of these assholes have ever read any history of HUAC, blacklisting, etc. because they'd fit right in.

They're obsessed with sex being traded for reviews (which didn't happen) but only the vagina side of the equation (because they can't get any) and anything that even remotely sounds like someone else getting sex for something involving video games.

They completely ignore AAA-game companies basically buying reviews via ads, payola, swag, etc. because THAT'S not about those evil vaginas they can't seem to persuade to be in their vicinity.

Conflate? That assumes there's honest confusion.

They're trying to exploit ignorance under the guise of a righteous crusade (with plenty of war imagery to go around from a bunch of yahoos who've never been out of the country, let alone used a gun not made of polygons) to hate on people they never liked in the first place and/or could never get any willing sexual encounters from.
