Intro to Discworld Game
07/21/12, 16:20 Interesting. I thought this was similar to Pratchett's "Guards, Guards" novel, and it turns out it's basically the same plot with Rincewind running things instead of Sam Vimes. I guess you couldn't write a fantasy adventure back then without the protagonist being a wizard, huh? |

Move Over Liberals and Let Conservatives Drive the Economy
07/21/12, 03:33 How is he not a true conservative? He lowered taxes for the rich, restricted abortion, took away civil rights in the name of security, weakened environmental standards, stymied any attempt at regulating the banking system, and claimed that God was telling him to do what he did.
That may sound satirical, but what conservative currently running for or serving (and I use that term quite wrongly) in office would disagree that they want to do those things to an even greater extent?
I know it's not the classical definition of "conservative," but it's not like most of what you get in stores is the classic definition of Coca-Cola, either. |

POETV watches people make stuff: water gilding a wooden mascaron
07/21/12, 03:30 Plaster restoration is also amazing to watch. A lot of crown molding isn't wood, but plaster. It's thrown into the corner where the wall meets the ceiling, then some guy with a more apparent skill in his arm than a major-league pitcher takes a trowel that shapes the plaster into a "carved wood" shape at the same speed a normal mortal would use to draw a line with a Sharpie.
I still don't get how those guys could make whole walls and ceilings flat using only a wet plank of wood with a handle on it, but they can. |

Move Over Liberals and Let Conservatives Drive the Economy
07/21/12, 03:25 Much like how Bush II killed the term "common sense," making it mean "stop asking me questions and just believe what I've been told to say," the term "small business owner" is an ill-defined term that is left vague so that people will think they're all mom and pop shops that are struggling to get by because of the big, bad ol' gub'ment.
Leaving aside the lawas and regs that other, larger corporate "persons" pay to have passed so it's less likely they'll ever face competition from below, you have to look at what the actual Small Business Administration defines as a small business:
http://www.sba.gov/content/what-sbas-definition-small-business-concern/
Looking at the employee numbers you could have and annual revenue, I think the only way a lot of those are "small business" is by comparison to outfits like Apple and Bear Sterns. Not to mention the one about farming is laughable, as a great many corporate farming concerns legally rig their structure so they look like a shitload of family farms on paper so they can pillage the subsidies meant for actual family farms to survive.
I wish someone would fucking call every politician on their use of "small business," asking them what they think it means vs. the definition that gives undeserved breaks to incredibly profitable companies, not to mention government contracts meant for actual small business:
http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/how-the-new-york-times-became-a-small-business/
It's become a meaningless term with about as much reliability and definable characteristics as "organic" food. |

07/20/12, 07:13 I don't suppose they all realize the Rapture was made up by a Scottish "theologian" about 200 years ago and is mentioned NOWHERE in the Bible, right? |

Ann Romney: 'We've Given All You People Need To Know'
07/20/12, 02:50 The problem is the GOPers won't care. Hell, those in office will likely try to pass bills making everything he's done legal, if not lauding it as being "smart" or "clever."
I still can't believe the "run America like a business" bullshit. Sure, the government is supposed to make a profit, everyone knows that. And we can look forward to him outsourcing every government employee until we can't get driver's licenses without e-mailing our vital stats to some place in China for processing. |

666 Micro Chip Implant Coming March 23, 2013 ??
07/20/12, 01:56 My favorite fictional religious fundie "medical device" were the artificial wombs that either Michelle Bachmann or Christine O'Donnell (or someone like them) was claiming were being used to grow clones.
My first thought was, "Someone's invented an artificial womb? WHERE CAN I INVEST MY MONEY?!" The revenue from wealthy women that want kids but no stretch marks or caesarian scars alone would make the company wealthier than Apple. |

Ann Romney: 'We've Given All You People Need To Know'
07/19/12, 23:24 I find it truly disheartening to see people so stupid as to ignore the fact that the rich have seen their taxes shrink for over 40 years, with no resulting increase in wages, jobs, or the standard of living thanks to giving more of our nation's wealth to the "job creators." They also soley blame Obama for the economy, ignoring Bush's terms in office and the GOP filibustering everything that could help in the Senate (the latest was a bill to get rid of tax deductions for shipping jobs overseas and giving tax credits for relocating back to the US) just so they can say it's Obama's fault.
Then they claim it's all about jobs while restricting birth control, abortion, and disenfranchising the most vulnerable voting classes.
I'm having to constantly re-define evil thanks to these fuckers, and they've got this smiling robot leading them who thinks/computes that waitressing is a job that pays a middle-class salary. |

Some AR functions would be nice, too. |

Mr.Freeze's monologue to his semi-dead wife on their anniversary (BTAS)
07/19/12, 21:24 All Batman & Robin did was give Arnie his most disappointing role in a generation and perhaps make the 1960's Batman TV show look well-written by comparison.
And not every hottie in a movie has to be a good actor/actress with well-written lines, but there's a reason one might re-watch a movie for a performance other than how well someone orgasms. |

Mr.Freeze's monologue to his semi-dead wife on their anniversary (BTAS)
07/19/12, 21:22 Freeze's backstory only includes Gotham and Batman (like all good villain stories, really) when the hero either gets in the way of his goal or intentionally inserts himself between the villain and the goal. It's the lengths a character goes to that determines if they're a "bad guy" or not.
The old form of just having someone invent a macguffin, make a suit out of it and go nuts on [Hero]man are (hopefully) over, for the most part. |

Star Trek - Titles and Chase Scene
07/19/12, 16:03 Yeah, you've hit the things I disliked most about the movie's plot. The line from cadet to Captain's Chair was quite unsatisfying and made absolutely no sense.
It's like "we know that guy's the Captain because he was the Captain on the TV show and that means he's going to be the Captain no matter what shit he pulls." It was about as well thought-out as Anakin Skywalker becoming Vader in Ep's I-III. |

Star Trek - Titles and Chase Scene
07/19/12, 15:58 @cognitive: It's hard to do ongoing villains right when they get different writers to script each and every damn show. Trek needed a head writer or "continuity arc guy" a LONG time ago, but I'm not holding my breath. |

We got trouble, right here in Pony city
07/19/12, 15:42 I'm amazed how long a shadow "The Music Man" has cast with (I'm assuming) so few people having actually seen it. |

Star Trek - Titles and Chase Scene
07/18/12, 21:24 Sorry, that should be VII onwards.
Star Trek VI did have a lot going for it, though Shatner should really have died saving the president and let it go. |

'In The Mood' Shirts
07/18/12, 21:23 We tried using those on our kid when he caught a cold. They're far too inaccurate. Besides, imagine how embarrassed you'll be explaining to others later on that your kids brain damage was because you couldn't tell it was a 105 degree fever because the ladybug looked okay. |
