"Unlicensed" is accurate. I'm 99.9% sure that no money went to Disney, nor did anyone at Disney issue contracts letting a tubby dictator use Disney trademarked and copyrighted characters for his little tea party.
By your logic, China's knock-offs of just about everything isn't unlicensed, and it's fine because they're a sovereign country and can do what they want, right? |

This is to say nothing, by the by, of the enormous infrastructure built up by insurance companies to deny coverage and hospitals to grant coverage, as well as various discount cards and other incentives making treatments/drugs cost a SHITLOAD more to someone without insurance just so the companies involved can make what they consider to be a good profit after all of the discounts to other recipients. |

@harriet: But how do you tell them which is which? You don't have a common frame of reference, even on a star chart, unless you can see what they see and draw a line for them. You can't tell if they're drawing a line right, left, up, down, or diagonal. |

Gee, how do tumors like that often become ones that require millions and millions of dollars to fix?
Oh, right, it's because we have lots of people who don't have any wellness coverage, even under what are considered 'good' health care plans, which allow small problems to go undiagnosed and untreated until they become big problems.
If anyone ever deserved a sudden chronic disease made of ironic justice, it's this guy and most of his party. |

This sort of reminds me of something I heard on Q.I. It was the idea that the concept we had no way of teaching to an alien race via verbal communication was that of "left" and "right."
I'm not entirely sure that's true, unless we are restricted to common verbal communication, but I'd figure you could do some kind of mathematical model or something. |

What's funny/sad is how the upper-middle class is starting to get hit with declining home values and they're doing with their houses what corporations do with storefronts all the time: Abandoning them.
I think it's called "Strategic Foreclosure," and megacorps (as well as the wealthy) would use it all the time whenever a property wasn't doing as well as it had been hoped. The bankers and investors had been relying on the working and middle classes devotion to where they live to keep them paying for houses they can no longer afford while those for whom money was no object defaulted as part of a portfolio strategy.
Now that either more people have figured out that trick or are being forced to walk away from multi-million dollar homes, I think we're in for another round of home foreclosures in what were considered "nice neighborhoods." |

If you're including investment and stock markets in "finance," then no, it's not a zero-sum game. If it were, then you couldn't actually make money. Any profits would have to come out of someone else's portfolio, and that's not always the case. For example, if I buy some gold at $5 over the market price, the seller has made money. I keep that gold and sell it a year later for $10 more than I paid for it. I make money. Nobody lost anything, unless you want to somehow contend that my year-long storage of the gold is a "loss" of whatever space it took up.
Besides, saying that any attempt to reign in a way someone is making money is a "loss" is the same logic used to justify things like closing newspapers. Very often, newspapers ARE profitable, they just aren't, to the mind of the current crop of investment sociopaths, profitable ENOUGH because they don't give you the double-digit returns that, up until a decade or so ago, were considered irrational. |

I've been to a lot of conventions for comics, media, etc., and I've never heard the announcer-person ever patronize the crowd like that. Gaming cons never say crap like "will every 1up please take their extra lives and evacuate the building."
Of course, I've never been to PAX, where they might just emulate the Penny-Arcade comic and throw gasoline on the crowd while trying to make jokes about penises. |
