The big problem is, there's not one moment you can point to in the series and say, "Wow, that's just biffed up." It's more of a slow burn: you're initially unsettled by the over-the-top character designs, the weird set-up, and the epic orchestral metal accompanying each sword fight. Then, the series gets more and more deranged as the viewer delves into the characters' psychoses, until the strangeness happening on screen seems merely symptomatic of the storyline's rampant sexual perversion.
Oh yeah, and it's also supposed to dissect fairy tale archetypes at the same time.
So, basically, it's one of those 'you gotta watch it' shows. For the uninitiated, it might look like everything that's wrong about anime, but for those in the know, that's what makes it so right. It's meta-anime. |
