Lest I sound snobby (well, snobbier than I am anyway) I want to make it abslutely clear that I think Bowie and to a slightly lesser degree Prince (and the Beatles while we're at it) were doing pop music the right way, pop isn't about innovation it's about being aware of artists who are doing fresh, innovative work, identifuing their most distinctive characteristics, and then appropriating those as ELEMENTS OF YOUR OWN SOUND. Sure it's usually done in the lazier "repackage someone else's ideas in a more marketable form" way but when it's done right - which everyone I named did - it rises above that.

I can't think of a single thing Bowie did that someone else hadn't done better first, but I can't think of anyone who integrated it all together and made it accessible to a general audience as well as he did at the time. And as much as people who have the context to recognize that when it happens tend to bemoan the pilfering of their subculture's signifiers (and they're usually right in the long run, because

Ilike Prince and Bowie but both of them were massively overrated and not anywhere near the innovators they're painted as. But both good pop artists who synthesized their influences into something distinctive instead of just copying.

I should get around to filling in the blanks in my knowledge and finally making the timeline that correlates Bowie's career with the artists he was lifting his sound from at any given time.

Prince was no Cameo but he had some really good songs.

There's an easy litmus test for determining the one true Batman movie, and it's the presence or absence of shark repellent batspray.

I thought it was pretty good in the theater but I've never once successfully sat through it since then, not even back in the 90s.

Honestly, even Edward Scissorhands has lost me at this point, you can already see things going wrong there. Tim Burton will always be Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice to me, I could live without the rest of it (except Mars Attacks but that's more for contrarian reasons than anything else). I loved Scissorhands as a kid but grew out of it pretty quickly.

This has always been my favorite version of one of my absolute favorite Zappa songs, and listening to it a lot in high school saved me a lot of disappointment once I reached voting age.

Oh, I think it would be crazy for him to not push as hard as possible in the primaries, if only to force the Clinton campaign a bit left (there are even some vague suggestions of tapping Warren as a running mate to appease Sanders supporters coming out of her camp, although I'll believe it when I see it and I would hope Warren would decline since she can do a lot more good where she is), but in the general election there's no choice. Entertainment value notwithstanding, a Trump presidency would mean decades of corporatist majority in the supreme court and would pretty much ruin most of the rest of our lives in the US and wouldn't be so hot for the rest of the world either (but great for the Zuckerbergses and Gateses and Jobses of the ascendant technocracy).

Basically, the most electable candidates in the race are Sanders and Kaisich, but that's not the race we're going to get, which doesn't surprise me. As much as it makes me feel good that Bernie is literally the first candidate in my lifetime who has actually spoken to my concerns, I never expected him to get anywhere near this far, so seeing the window of opportunity closing is disappointing but not surprising, and as much as I don't like voting for Hillary on the grounds that she's right of Trump when it comes to business and economics, as well as CERTAIN AREAS of foreign policy, there's obviously no comparison in terms of experience and social issues.

The Sanders campaign started as an act of protest and the Trump campaign started as a guerilla marketing campaign for the Trump brand, and both have succeeded far beyond all expectations, and I have a lot of hope for the next few election cycles if Clinton manages to win the general and pressure is kept on her administration from the left while also shifting the demographics in congress, fix the superdelegate system and fix the huge problem with institutionalized vote suppression by both parties (you wouldn't believe what's happening in Rhode Island this weekend, makes the Brooklyn debacle look puny by comparison, although that was strategically more important).

Oh, and I didn't find that timestamp, Bort, that was the first place I clicked in the timeline, because if you click almost anywhere in one of his actual speeches (as opposed to the soundbite-machine TV interviews) you're going to find something of substance.

"Minus five phantom stars for how Bernie thinks he can do better than Hillary in the general elections when he can't even beat her in the primaries. All the Republicans have to do is point out how single payer failed in Bernie's home state and he's done. He has got to know this."

I know general election projections are wildly inaccurate, but most have him matching up much more strongly against the GOP frontrunners than her (in fact, in some of the projections he loses).

Also, spellcheck tries to correct "Kristallnacht" to "Walpurgisnacht."

Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, and sometimes Cenk although I do think he's mellowed in his old age, and I'm glad that Sanders interview he did a while back made me give him a second chance because he's still hit and miss but a lot less miss than he used to be.

And shit, for everything about Alex Jones that deserves ridicule, every so often he get stuff about globalism right and he was all over the TPP from the beginning. I'd take him over Limbaugh any day.

"... at least until we catch up to Europe's level of thought-control sophistication, and Twitter's "hashtag censorship" starts being used to take down liberal critiques of Islam and misogyny."

Personally I'm not nearly as worried about top-down censorship on social media as I am about the way it empowers mob mentality and has been (and will continue to be) leveraged by extremists of all kinds to socially assassinate their rivals. Like what Gamergaters tried to do to a bunch of people at the height of that, and what people n the left have been doing to academics they don't like (especially evo-psych researchers, who for all I'm skeptical of some of their claims, don't deserve things like false accusations of incest and similar career ending smear campaigns, which can and do happen too often) for over a decade. Titter in particular is a terrifyingly efficient tool for stirring up the 21st century equivalent of a lynch mob.

"(I gave up after Siamese Dream. I think they're yet another band ruined by MTV.)"

I like Siamese Dream, too. That's where I lost them. MTV deserves some blame but I think it's really on Corgan. The story is that he spent a year living in his car in a parking garage writing Mellon Collie, which he conceived of as his own The Wall. And unfortunately for his music, he succeeded. Both albums are acceptable if you're a certain kind of 14 year old, but if you're older (and you're me) they're a bunch of overwrought schmaltz punctuated by some really great lad guitar tones courtesy of Gilmour's Space Echo and Corgan's Fender Blender, respectively. The album as a whole is not for me but I can respect it on a certain level. Unfortunately, everything that followed is, well, the Billy Corgan version of Roger Waters' solo career.
