My shit is far to meta for him to even understand, he'd pretty much have to repost my entire history for the joke to translate.

Another part of the problem is that feminism became a significant marketing demographic before it should have, there was still a lot of important progress to be made and it's hard to do that when it becomes a business.

Also so much of mainstream Feminism seems to have fallen into this trap of seeing equality within the existing economic paradigm as the goal when the existing economic paradigm is fundamentally incompatible with equality, gender or otherwise.

I never really liked the direction Mike took things after the split with Joel. He's very good at it, but to me it always feels like there's too much concern for keeping the jokes accessible and self-contained and fitting in as many as possible. I don't think I've ever learned anything from his branch of the MST3k family tree, whereas Joel's branch, especially in the original format, was never afraid of jokes and references that most people wouldn't get, which meant you could watch an episode of MST3k, especially in seasons 2-4, and be set on a path toward learning about all sorts of things. After he left, you would get a lot of well crafted, self contained jokes about the movie itself and that was the extent of it. Which is fine, it's just not my preference.

Point is, I don't really have any interest in watching this myself. I'm sure all 6 of you were on the edge of your seats over that one.

Part of the problem is that the actual meaning word "Feminism" has been so diluted since it became a marketing buzzword that it's impossible to to have a meaningful conversation abut it anymore. PRetty much everything she has complained about in this video is something that does actually exist, but by using the term "feminism" to describe it people are lumping in a vast majority of reasonable people with reasonable beliefs with a tiny but loud and media savvy minority of extremists, and it does nothing to advance any kind of dialogue about real issues that should be talked about, it just poisons everything.

And the left is just as guilty of doing this as the right is (although to be fair, the conservative establishment tends to have a much worse track record as far as empowering their extremist fringe, though the left is not off the hook there either).

Western (and particularly US) culture still equates labor with salvation, so we view people who can't or don't work as less than human. Which is a problem because it has been about a century since the amount of work available that actually contributes to the good of society has been far outpaced by the increase in population, but we are still trapped in a 17th century paradigm where everyone has to work or they are less than human, so we can't accept the idea of a social structure where labor for the sake of laboring with no real benefit t the individual or community isn't taken for granted as not just good but a necessary prerequisite to being human, even though that is the type of society we need if any of the social progress of the past couple centuries is going to endure.

A big part of the problem is that everyone still worships the 20th century economic myth of perpetual growth being possible (much less desirable). Between that and the secularized form of Calvinistic predestination that dominates every aspect of American culture (which in turn dominates Western economics and has a huge influence in the East as well since the 20th century socialist experiment imploded) it's easy to see how we got where we are.

I have a friend who works in one of the rare union shops that Verizon has (their wired services are unionized). He says the union departments aren't even allowed to communicate with the nonunion departments (i.e. anything wireless) for fear that they might catch on to how badly they're being screwed.

Because there is more human curation of automated recommendation that most people realize, because automated recommendation doesn't actually work very well. Trust me, research and curation of "automated" recommendations for one of the most old and successful technology providers in the industry was my job for over 7 years. It's a farce. passable automated recommendation on really became even vaguely acceptable in the past few years and that's largely because of a huge amount of human labor (mostly unpaid, I was a rare exception) put in to creating the raw data that is fed in to the algorithms to get "personalized" results.

My point is, it's very likely that Google's algorithms love to recommend this stuff because there are people telling it that this stuff is one of the things that people should be paying attention to. And even beyond direct human manipulation, algorithms aren't neutral at all, and they are most definitely designed to favor results that are either statistically likely to elicit a strong emotion from the person who sees them (Youtube doesn't care if you agree or disagree as long as you click, and rage is probably the best way to get someone to click) or have a lot of marketing clout behind them. Even with a truly "neutral" algorithm, these patterns would develop, though, maybe even more quickly.

On the other hand, this video

has been in my top 5 Youtube recommendations every single time I've logged in since the day I watched it, so they're doing SOMETHING right anyway.

I don't know whether the voice actor being very obviously not a kid makes this better or worse. It's better in that the idea of having a real kid record it is completely awful, but I think the immediate effect of the adult voice is probably creepier than a real kid's voice would be, because it just makes it sound like some kind of horrifying fetish device.

Not me, if it gets over 74 I can hardly move. The flip side is that until a couple of years ago I didn't even start feeling the cold until it was in the mid to low 50s, so I saved a lot on heating bills, but as I've gotten older I've stated to prefer the mid to high 60s.

As far as I can tell from my own body, humans aren't really adapted to live much farther south than Montreal.

There's a great story his wife told in an interview about Nick Drake (who was one of the only musicians he was friends with) bringing a Tim Buckley record over for John to hear, and after maybe a minute John kind of furrowed his brow and said "too many octaves" and took the record off. He was pretty notorious for not thinking too highly of his peers, even more so than Robbie Basho.

To be fair, the whole beginning monologue is him explaining that he wrote it entirely as a gimmick to make fun of the way audiences fetishized technical playing in the 60s UK coffeehouse scene. The whole piece was originally him mocking his audience so subtly that they didn't get it, and yet it's also a really good piece of music on its own.

So yeah, big gimmick.

I wondered why they had only recently decided to watch Lady Terminator even though it's one of the better known crappy movies of the 80s. It makes sense now.
PoeTV Watches People Make Stuff: Lawn Darts
07/06/15, 16:06

I grew up in a family that respected my ability to not blow myself up or anything, if I'd lived in New Hampshire I'd have probably been a serious fireworks-making hobbyist by high school but as it was I could only really get away with using wooden match heads, ground up sparklers and whatever I could salvage from the unused stuff drunk people lost on the beach every 4th of July for me to find on the 5th.

Point is, I was playing with matches and sometimes black powder from maybe 8 to 11 years old without supervision (once they new they could trust my judgement) and I never once got so much as a burn PRECISELY BECAUSE I was raised to have common sense and trusted to act responsibly about it.

Companies shouldn't be allowed to market lawn darts directly to kids but kids also shouldn't be so sheltered from risk that they grow up to be irresponsible adults, and worse yet, are the sort of teenagers who do stupid shit that endangers others to rebel against their parents. If you appropriately respect a kid's autonomy and intelligence without being some kind of neglectful "kids are just little adults and can do whatever they want maaaan" hippie - then being an idiot isn't a very rebellious move anymore.

Anyhow, I partially recant since I checked the actual wording of the law and it only bans them from sale not possession, which means it is only a half stupid law (it should have banned them from being sold or marketed TO MINORS - there's no sane reason why an adult can legally buy an air rifle or a crossbow pistol but not lawn darts).

Look at this, a store that has an entire section specifically for YOUTH crossbow pistols:
