A lot of the better cartoonists of the 80s and 90s ended up libertarian. Do youself a favor and don't look at anything Peter Bagge has done since 9/11 if you liked the Bradleys.

It's kind of the second wave punk way, really, especially in New England. After 30 they go rockabilly and get libertarian.

How to walk through walls using the 4th dimension
02/15/16, 16:11

I agree it doesn't make sense to use 1-3 for the first three spatial dimensions and 4 for time but I thought that was kind of the informal standard since Einstein really caught on. Most of my info is from older Michio Kaku stuff like Hyperspace, though.

If I'm off base here I'd love to learn why, this stuff is fascinating.

You use the 4th dimension whenever you walk in general, since the 4th dimension has almost universally meant time for the last century or so. What this guy's talking about is more typically labelled the FIFTH dimension, even though it describes the 4th dimension in n-dimensional space.

It's not really a standardize terminology though, so I guess technically he's not wrong, it's more just a bit of an archaic way to describe it.

Auto 5 for hyperspace.
Bernie Sanders on political engagement, working with Congress
02/15/16, 13:10

"All he says is that the people need to tell Congress what to do."

How do we tell people in congress what to do (theoretically at least)? By voting. Sometimes it even works.

For better or worse, so-called "trigger phrases" are how politics are played out on television. When sanders says "political revolution" it is a quick, soundbite-friendly way to simultaneously make an intellectual appeal to his informed supporters and potential supporters (who don't need a middle school civics class to understand what he means) and an emotional appeal to the uninformed ones (who wouldn't sit through it). More substantial, concrete information is available on the web, in the debates (for a change!) and an MSNBC interview is not the place for spelling it out in detail.

This isn't unique to Sanders, it is how the medium of the TV interview works and every candidate who has any interest in victory does it. It's unfortunate that things work his way but it's reality.

As for literally spelling it out, I've already posted a few clips in the past week where he explicitly says that we need to increase voter turnout for midterm elections, you can find them in my submission history.

It was pretty disheartening when I figured out that King of the Hill wasn't satire.

"Talk to some of his supporters, though;"

In a Sanders vs. Clinton argument this is kind of irrelevant because I guarantee I could match you one for one on uninformed, naive, single-issue, "from the gut" Clinton supporters. That's just playing the odds.

That Achewood is great. I kind of feel like I'm both characters in it.

This site is one of the leftovers of a simpler time on the Internet when most people still realized that we're all playing characters on here. Sure they may be based on ourselves in some cases but they're still characters.

Old Zircon is about as real as Karl Pilkington.

"You're the guy who posted this video where he's talking how to engage with Congress; this would be a prime place to emphasize that we need to win back Congress, and yet he speaks not a word of it."

But that's exactly what he is talking about in this video.

Don't worry about an all consuming battle, I don't take anything on here - especially political arguments - seriously enough to take any kind of offense, it's all in good fun even when it's substantive, and you can rest assured that I'll be voting for Hillary (again) if it comes to that.
Reminder that our dystopian future will be more like Spaceballs than like 1984.
02/15/16, 10:46

I think I figured out something about Spaceballs here:

http://sotcaa.org/comment/referencecomedy.html

Specifically:

"LEVEL THREE
Months later still. An older generation of comedians finally grasps that there's a new THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT to refer to in their tired acts. Again, for the most part, these comedians need not have experienced the THAT WOMAN WITH THE TITS WHO DOES GARDENING first hand. The media climate has told them that it's time to do a parody of it in their non-negotiable Christmas shows. Whether they do this to appear 'on the ball' like the younger comedians who discovered how easy it was in the first place, or because they themselves started out as cocksure as those young shitters and have refused to let go is debatable. But the whole situation is deeply embarrassing - almost a comedianic version of pensioners still referring to teenagers as 'hippies' or 'punk rockers'. To call the older comedians 'out of touch' is fair, but it can be argued that the younger generation of comedians deemed 'on the ball' aren't contributing anything better. They just happen to get there first. "

This is pretty much what Spaceballs is on the surface (and what Men In Tights was to the core, in my opinion), but the twist is that whether by happy accident or because he was still a pretty sharp parodist underneath it all, the bad jokes, the shameless cash in, Mel Brooks' obvious near-complete ignorance of what he was parodying, become the joke and for me at least it works.

CBS anchors chuckle when Hillary Clinton says she can't be bought
02/15/16, 09:43

I actually still give her the benefit of the doubt to a degree. It's been a long time since anyone was able to get elected without corporate sponsorship, and I'm still idealistic enough to think she really does represent progressive values despite the massive amount of compromise, and really is the only chance the left has to keep one of their own in office. I don't think she's purely cynical and self serving by a long shot, I just think that she's unable or unwilling to look outside the established political industry of the past 30 or 40 years and try to actually engage the majority who have been disenfranchised by it.

In a way, she's the more idealistic candidate because she believes that the core values she and her constituency hold are so strong that they can withstand great compromises, whereas Sanders has a more realistic view wherein there are lines that have to be drawn.
