Tea Party founder backs Occupy Wall Street
10/21/11, 18:43

The Tea Party was a little more astroturf than grass roots. The GOP is pretty well organized, and they have some cunning and well funded allies who definitely authored and shaped a lot of the Tea Party's identity.

Also, one of the smears used against OWS has been that their message isn't clear...of course, everyone who says that is under the impression that the Tea Party's message just magically solidified the day it way formed.

I no longer think the American divide can be crossed rationally.

Between this plea for violence and the cheers Cain got for "its the fault of unemployed for being unemployed", the differences between the two sides of America are too great.

In the next ten years, this divide means that government is going to stop functioning effectively. Tensions will grow and rhetoric will escalate. Slightly-different versions of OWS and the Tea Party will start coming into direct conflict. Its going to get very ugly.

I'm certain of it.

Yes, so this report is saying that right wing rhetoric is simplistic while left wing rhetoric is more nuanced and more difficult to stereotype...thanks for the bulletin.

Not new...Palin was good at that and some of the Fox morons have it down to a science. Sticking with your conviction is much more valuable than accepting reality.

"Tonight's dinner is tacos. Yup, that's what we're eating. Tacos."

"This plate right in front of me is spaghetti. See? Look at it...noodles, marinara sauce, spaghetti."

"I was right! Its tacos!"

"Uhh, I am a chef, I worked in restaurants that served spaghetti. I am completely positive that this is spaghetti. Its an indisputable, immutable fact.

Some people like racing because they admire competition, strategy, performance, and human achievement.

Racing is a beautiful sport but it can be very dangerous. The danger is an unfortunate side-effect of competing that close to the edge, not the allure.

Anyway, NASCAR implemented a lot of significant safety improvements, and no one has died, or even gotten seriously injured, in ten years.

Formula 1 (open-wheel cars) races on "road courses". A typical course has like ten different turns, and the skill comes in carefully weaving through the course. Speeds reach 200mph, but only for extremely short bursts of time before the driver has to brake to complete the next turn. Contact is infrequent and the cars are not designed for it.

NASCAR (stock cars) races on ovals. Long straightaways, four turns. High speeds are sustained. Contact is much more frequent, but stock cars are designed for beating and banging.

The IndyCar circuit is open wheel cars racing mostly on ovals. It features sustained periods of high speeds and more contact.

Jimmie Johnson is right, IndyCar should not race on ovals as frequently as they do. Its too fucking dangerous.

Counterpoint

Cain is like a Greatest Hits compilation of the baser, lowest common denominator GOP talking points; "I hate Muslims!", "9-9-9 Tax plan!", "I'm a successful businessman", "I'm black so Democrats are racist!". He's not an embarrassment, he says what Republicans actually believe.

However, I find him the most insincere, least believable of all the candidates. And his record won't stand up to any scrutiny. He's a cypher, but that will only go so far. He is a slightly more mainstream version of Ron Paul, and has the same chance of winning a thing.

But he is not an embarrassment to these people. Hell, he's a point of pride.
