Manhood Academy: The Principles That Govern Social Interaction

That's the root of the comedy to me, that Masculinist behavior is pretty much the antithesis of "manning up", "being a man", "take it like a man", hell, pretty much any concept of masculinity. They're such wimps they're too scared to be honest respectable wimps.

It's that Fundie Mindset. His evangelizes his beliefs because they're not being used to make him a better person, they're used as proof that he is better than everyone else. He'd have made for a mediocre PoE exhibit, but one hell of a P_N poster.

Nahh, he'd never join Team Jesus. He has too many valid reasons to despise his creator.

Many animals can ignore, but cats can ignore the living SHIT out of something. 20% of their waking time is spent in "Look how much I am totally fucking ignoring you" mode.

I knew a cat in a recording studio who enjoyed sleeping inside the kick drum. I figured it had learned its lesson when someone ran over and stomped on the pedal, but as soon as the band left the cat climbed inside and went back to sleep. That happened 3 or 4 times every day, it would lay in there and glare at the drummer until they stomped on the bass pedal to get it out because "Fuck you, I'm a cat".

It's not like nobody ever accuses the CIA or Pentagon of crazy stuff, but a powerful and well funded department doesn't really give a shit about that because it draws public attention away from the bad things they're actually doing, which are less like X-Files and more like Excel spreadsheets.

The departments that can really be damaged by psychotic rants are the ones that are genuinely needed and/or aren't up to any real maleficence, because those are perpetually underfunded and always the first thing to face a budget axe. That's why shitwipes like Alex Jones aren't just an amusing diversion, they're an active detriment to society.

Hey, I never knew clicking on an artists name led to a comments page, I always thought it was a search tag.

So anyways, how 'bout that Bob Calvert? I stumbled across "Capt. Lockheed" while looking for Hawkwind stuff, and a year later thought to look him up on Wiki and discovered he had quite a catalog. I submitted 2 videos because Capt. Lockheed has some historical/satire value as well as several other good songs, and while Hype isn't one of my favorite albums, "The Greenfly and the Rose" gives me goosebumps. Good lyrics. You'll probably want to hunt down Test-Tube Conceived too, and check out Lucky Leif and the Longships for a funny "What if rock'n'roll had been invented by Nordic vikings?" kinda thing.

Oh oh I hope this wasn't supposed to be the place for the artist biography oh god how did i get here i'm not good with comput

"Hype" was an influential synthpop album and the album track here is much more polished, but personally I'm much more partial to the quietly beautiful demo version that was on the reissue of "Freq": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gddVnK6o1KI

All these years I thought Calvert was just some guy who played Lead Poet in Hawkwind, but he released several great solo albums before dying in 1988.
The Right Stuff

It started as a joke, some comedy skits about the Luftwaffe's disastrous contract for F-104 fighters, but friends of Calvert started showing up to jam on it, Brian Eno, Viv Stanshall, and the classic '74 Hawkwind lineup, making it a full concept album. Look for the entire album on YT.

I'm not watching it a second time, but IIRC he left out the best bits from the Eric Hovind Live video.. Hovind would ask some sarcastic math problem like "Yeah and 35 times 2 million is less than 50 million right?" and the audience would agree with him in unison, so he'd laugh nervously and correct them, but it kept happening over and over because he was using a transcript of one of his dads presentations and unable to ad lib or skip the audience feedback lines when the crowd proved unable to parse sarcastic rhetorical questions because they were expecting a sermon so they just automatically agreed with anything they were told, and his "Look I'm a dumb idiot scientist duhh" character is indistinguishable his regular personality.

Mary Roach's "Packing for Mars" is about the practical realities of space travel, and it sure as hell ain't Star Trek, though it is what "Enterprise" should have been like.

MISSION COMMANDER STAFFORD: "Give me a napkin quick. There’s a turd floating through the air."

COMMAND MODULE PILOT YOUNG: "I didn’t do it. It ain’t one of mine."

LUNAR MODULE PILOT CERNAN: "I don’t think it’s one of mine."

STAFFORD: "Mine was a little more sticky than that. Throw that away."

YOUNG: "God almighty."

[8 minutes later]

CERNAN: "Here’s another goddam turd. What’s the matter with you guys?"

If this Shatterstar guy can master any weapon by touching it, why does he even have a sword? If I was him my gimmick would be grabbing random objects to use in a flurry of improvised weapons. Why be four hundredth jerk with a spiky sword when you can be the psycho who kicked Colossus' ass with a hair dryer, a dead bird, and an old shopping bag. Every pre-battle scene would have a panorama shot, and your opponents mentally cataloging every object within 20 feet of you and how much it would hurt to have it smashed into their face or shoved up their ass. Hang out in hardware departments and auto parts stores, if your enemy sucks then challenge them in a produce department or lingerie boutique. Or grab your genitals all "Wanna find out how this can ruin their life?" That works pretty well even without superpowers.

That makes it better, because it's like the movie is just 90 minutes of awkward angry profanity, the argument spills over into the title, and Ken Russel gets the last word.
