Malfunctioning Teddy Ruxpin doll
03/09/09, 16:09

Teddy Ruxpins can't lip-sync to any old tape. The tapes are special in two ways. First of all, they have a rectangular slot cut in them where regular tapes do not. When you press play on a Teddy Ruxpin, a trigger comes down and fits into the slot in the special tape. If you put in a normal tape without the slot then the trigger mechanism doesn't fit into the groove and it prevents Teddy from speaking. (You can get around this by carefully removing the trigger.) The second difference is that the left stereo track on a Teddy Ruxpin tape is a regular audio signal and the right track is an analog signal that gives instructions on how to move the mouth and eyes. If this signal is missing, Teddy won't move his mouth and eyes (or at least will move them very sporadically). You can hear this if you pop a Teddy tape into a regular stereo.

There's a good chance this guy's Teddy Ruxpin is fine but the tape is warped. This would explain why the audio coming from the speakers sounds distorted. If the analog signal on the other track was warped as well, it would cause Teddy's epilepsy.

Gene, Gene The Dancing Machine
01/21/09, 02:08

When I was a very young child, this was my favorite thing on TV. And to my parents' horror, any time I saw a black man in public, I would get all excited and point at him and scream GENE GENE DANCING MACHINE!!! I'd always be disappointed when they didn't start dancing for me.

Frasier singing the Frasier theme song live on 9/11
11/12/08, 13:41

Discussion I found on the meaning of the lyrics:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Its been fun watching the different theories regarding the meaning of "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs" pop up over the last few years. I don't think "Hamlet" has been as closely scrutinized or more divergently interpreted.

Here is what I (and the songwriters and other two creators of the show) thought it meant when we decided on it.

Hey baby I hear the blues a'callin'

(play on words: He's got the blues and referencing that he takes phone calls)

Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs

(mixed up people who call in)

And maybe I seem a bit
Well, maybe, but I got you pegged

(the core of Frasier's character: He is a nutcase himself much of the time, but can analyze the problems of others)

But I don't know what to do with those
Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs

(except these damn callers)

They're callin' again

(they're calling again)

Subject: Another analysis
From: Bill Jennings

Here's my Personal Theory (tm) as to the meaning behind the _Frasier_ theme.

What do tossed salad and scrambled eggs have in common? They are both things that, once made, can't be unmade. As the Gershwin song goes, "You Can't Unscramble Scrambled Eggs".

While the phrase can be applied to Frasier's callers, I think it has more to do with his family and friends. Frasier has put himself into a situation that he can't get out of. Sort of like tossed salad and scrambled eggs.
