Crowds Grow and Arrests Continue at NC General Assembly

I heard the exact same thing from jackass Libertarian acquaintances when I got involved with Occupy, so I'm guessing it's a talking point they're fed.

Let's be real: your friend doesn't give a damn about ending inequality anywhere, he doesn't care about the corrosive effects it has on his own society, and he supports a system that allows for undemocratic oppression on many different levels while pretending that it is 'freedom'. My current stock response is that I'm working to end capitalism everywhere, but it's easiest to start locally. That shuts them up quickly.

I'm not going to be able to get that out of my head now- like when someone points out the pretty lady optical illusion is also a witch.

That's the most reassuring thing I've heard all week.

We(I'm speaking broadly of the left) really haven't done any fighting at all when compared to the historical sacrifices that radical social movements have made. In fact, here in Seattle the local Democratic party is helping big businesses drive the city into full Red Scare mode against the local anarchist community. I still can't breath properly from whatever the hell the police were using against us at the Mayday anti-capitalist march.

It's like the Democratic party collectively read Chris Hedges' Death of the Liberal Class and decided that this time, they wanted to screw themselves even worse by destroying radical movements before they even get off the ground.

This guy is great. He also has a weekly podcast on his website (rdwollf.com) that's a great way to stay informed with economics while cutting through the bullshit.

Tropes vs Women in Video Games, Episode 1: Damsel in Distress
03/08/13, 16:34

Based on her argument, the damsel in distress becomes an objectified thing, robbed of her own agency. She's simply a belonging for men to fight over. Since this started with Anita taking action by requesting funding to start a web series that addresses sexism in video games, the answer is 'no'. That's simply collaboration.

I'm not suggesting that there weren't guys who donated out of a white knight motivation. Their behavior was a reaction to her action, though.

For people complaining about what the budget went to: the answer is research and taking the time to develop a persuasive, well-thought out argument.
Neil deGrasse Tyson: Has the Future Arrived?

Interestingly, he's really articulate and likeable when interacting in a less formal setting. I think a lot of it is the anarchist in him not liking the hierarchical format of a lecture.

Yeah, I posted the Flying Cars lecture. I think both guys have a point.

We're living through a time that makes me think of the Chinese treasure ships of the 15th century. They had the technology and resources to field a fleet of ships that traveled around the world, and if inclined could have beaten the Europeans to the whole colonial game. They ended up dismantling the fleet and turning inwards instead.

My point isn't that colonialism was good or the right path for China. It's that our technological capacity is being directed in a largely unnaccountable way, and maybe a market economy mixed with a plutocracy isn't the best way to channel our collective energy during this specific historical moment. In other words, perhaps the problem is that our modes of social organization haven't kept up with technological progress.

This video makes me question whether dialogue can actually lead to peace and understanding when an adversary's base moral inclinations are completely opposite from one's own. Five for that depressing thought.

It actually wasn't bad slam poetry, either. Ugh.

At my last big corporate programming gig, one of the things we had to take a class on was the different forms of open-source copyright. The purpose of this course was for us developers to know when it was legal to take these software libraries, add them to our proprietary code base, and profit. The whole concept of producing value in a situation like that is such a shell game.

I think the gatekeeper business model is symptomatic of the same basic problem: the internet IS the collective intellectual property wealth of humanity. It's impossible to make it fit into the western tradition of property rights. Instead, you have firms figuring out places in the distribution process where they can legally claim said collective wealth, and that's what passes for a business model.

When I was a kid, visiting my Grandparents' house was like going on an archaeology dig. They kept my Mom's, Aunts' and Uncle's rooms identical to the day they moved out. One of my Aunts had an old wastepaper basket in her room. It appropriated the style of 1960's populist radical art, but had a bunch of tame, pro-capitalist slogans written on it, like "Chairman Mao is a fink!"

This looks like the video game equivalent to that wastepaper basket.

Yes. Shaming girls with the message "police your sexuality because men are lecherous monsters who will embarrass you or worse" is just about the worst message a PSA could send. Fuck this shit.

I'm trying to put my finger on exactly what the difference is. Just watching Doom and Quake immediately got my adrenaline pumping. Is it just that they were fast and visceral, with great soundtracks?

Also, the Timesplitters series was amazing and should be on here. I guess they weren't doing consoles (no GoldenEye), though.
