Also, I sort of doubt Tom Cotton is big into Derrida.

Uh, what I mean by that is that while there is some of what might be called moral relativism in the humanities (looking at you, post-structuralism), it's a minority view. It's generally been my experience (and the opinion of faculty that I've talked to) that the biggest stumbling block in teaching an intro ethics course is to overcome the moral relativism that the students already have absorbed from the culture. Yes, Jimmy, there is more to ethics than just people's opinion, and yes, your opinion can be wrong, and yes, you actually have to justify your beliefs. Shocking, I know.

If I were to hazard a guess as to where the ubiquitous relativism in our culture comes from, I'd say that religion has fallen out of public life in a meaningful sense (except for the dogmatic theocrats) and hasn't been replaced by anything. So, instead of thinking about ethical issues through a Christian lens, people just stopped thinking about them. I'd also blame the valorization of personal preference in consumerism, and the way that public life has been largely replaced with private consumption.

He's right that we should focus on actual problems, rather than spending our time passing laws to protect our rights to not sell flowers arrangements to the gays.

Didn't the history of humankind strike you as illogical?

Now is the time to journey home to tell of what I've learned
My people I believe have every right to be concerned
For in spite of computers and advanced psychology
Behavior patterns are still a mystery
I predict the future of this earthly human race
Is that having made a mess of Earth
They'll move to outer space
Well there goes the neighborhood
Totally, completely, absolutely, irrevocably, highly illogical.

We should just socialize music. Pay a tax, get all music for free, pay artists based on how many people download their stuff. And artists keep money from concerts and merch.

Man, never have I rooted for conservative rednecks so hard.

These people are everything I don't like about "I'm spiritual but not religious" people. Just a syncretic pabulum that tells you you're special and better than the unenlightened, is compatible with consumerism and petty middle class aspirations, and doesn't actually require anything from you. Just look at these old white fucks and their angry dead eyes.
