The 'ol Seagulls on Laxatives Prank
07/22/12, 15:00

I'm going to call shenanigans on this one. I know birds have a fast metabolism, but there's no way the stuff would affect them so quickly.

What's more likely happening is they simply used food to entice the seagulls to fly over the crowd and seagulls shit all the time, even while flying so it's only natural there would be some spattering.

That's how the seagulls around here are, anyway.

"Jungle Love" was the first thing that popped into my head, too.
Horror Express (1972) - Starring Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing

This movie freaked me the fuck out when I saw it on TV as a kid one late night.

I'm not going to see "The Dark Knight Rises" in the theater. I'm waiting for the home video release. I plan on doing the same for this movie.

Don't get me wrong, I love Christopher Nolan movies. They are wonderful works of art and I think everyone should see them. I just don't want to sit in a fucking movie theater for that long a time. I want to have the option of pausing the film so I can go to the restroom, grab a snack...alter position to avoid avoid bedsores on my back and ass.

Dude wants to be the new Michael Mann, I guess.
POETV watches people make stuff: Goldfish Salvation
07/22/12, 00:25

AWESOME!

When I was a kid, one of my aunts bought me an art kit built around a similar principle. It came with several small sheets of glass that you would lay on top of little paint-by-numbers sheets. Then, you would paint the glass using the sheet under it as a guide.

When all the glass was painted, you would stack them in a special frame in order. The end product looked like a 3D object inside a block of glass.

Of course, since that side of my family is Catholic, the end product was a Virgin Mary in a block of glass. I ended up giving it back to her as a Christmas present. She was delighted. It was probably her master plan all along.
Horrifying Planet - Zebras
07/21/12, 23:41

Zebras are, in truth, pretty bad-ass. Plenty of nature documentaries have footage of zebras crippling and/or killing lions, hyenas, wild dogs and even crocodiles. Their hooves can shatter bones and they have a vicious bite.

Gazelles, on the other hand, are the popcorn chicken of the veldt.
Move Over Liberals and Let Conservatives Drive the Economy
07/21/12, 14:05

And don't forget the evil mastermind behind this plot is a thief who stole technology from a big rich company, something Rand supposedly would find reprehensible.

John Galt was hired by a company to come up with brilliant new inventions. While under contract with that company and by using that company's resources, he came up with the marvelous machine that could create energy from the air. Instead of giving this machine that could probably solve many of mankind's problems over to his employers, he decided to steal it when said employers instituted new policies that would benefit their workers.

He used the energy machine to build "Galt's Gulch", a little hidden Eden for the "prime movers" and convinced all the rich fucks to destroy the world's resources and hide in the protective invisibility dome while civilization collapsed. Bear in mind, the author puts all this forth as the good and virtuous thing to do.

Again, anyone who thinks this is a great book is an asshole.
Move Over Liberals and Let Conservatives Drive the Economy
07/21/12, 02:22

If it were really "Atlas Shrugged" come to life, the rich fucks would have set fire to all the oil wells and dynamited all the mines before hiding themselves away.

Seriously, that's what the book was about. A bunch of rich assholes born into rich families who owned all the natural resources destroyed said resources before hiding in a secret lair surrounded by an invisibility dome and powered by a machine that produced endless amounts of energy from thin air. They did this to punish the stupid non-rich people for demanding decent wages and the opportunity to claw their way up to a higher economic class.

The rich fucks' actions plunged the world into another dark age and they planned to hide in their little retreat until a time when they could emerge as gods to rule over the desperate primitive people.

People who think this is a great book are terrible evil people.

HEY!

People who were already rich got really REALLY rich last time a Republican was in charge.

That means the economy was great!

POETV watches people make stuff: water gilding a wooden mascaron
07/20/12, 20:23

The first time I saw this sort of gilding was on a PBS show about the restoration of an art museum in Europe that had been damaged by bombs in WWII.

I watched them repair dozens of little wooden cherubs, carefully apply the gold leaf and reinstall the little guys at the tops of marble columns.

I was impressed at the skill, but also more than a little disappointed as I had always assumed decorations like that were made of solid gold.

In my defense, I was only ten.
Mr. Wizard's a Dick
07/20/12, 17:28

Mr. Wizard was awesome.

He was the product of a time when being mistaken about something wasn't an unforgivable sin or proof that you were an inferior sub-human.

Nowadays, directly telling someone when they're wrong about something makes you an asshole, apparently.
Ann Romney: 'We've Given All You People Need To Know'

I wonder...

If Mitt has all that money in offshore accounts, does he include those in the 10% he gives to the lord?

Or does it only count as "income" if it can be taxed by the US government?

Star Trek - Titles and Chase Scene
07/18/12, 20:48

I loved the HELL out of the reboot. It was the first Trek movie that made me feel like I was a little kid again, watching syndicated classic Trek on the black & white portable TV atop my dresser.

To Hell with the haters and their whining.

Mid-1970s Mrs. Butterworth Commercial
07/16/12, 17:59

I hated Mrs. Butterworth's as a kid. It left a weird slick feeling in my mouth. Same goes for Log Cabin brand. I would find out as an adult that they were both corn syrup with artificial butter and maple flavoring mixed in.

Golden Eagle syrup was somewhat better. It was a homogenized blend of real honey...and corn syrup. I preferred straight up honey on biscuits & pancakes.

Nothing beats genuine maple syrup, though. It's expensive as Hell, but you don't need to use a lot of it.
