I think the issue is that anime is not a genre, it's a general term for a wide sweeping manner of art and animation, encompassing many styles. To compare a Ghibli film or a political drama to a children's fighting robot show just because they happen to be from the same country and are both animated is insanity, much like the AMPAS blanket "Best Animated Feature" award.
It's like making up a word to describe all Western style animation, then using that to compare Spongebob Squarepants with a Ralph Bakshi film. |
