Keith Olbermann's special comment on the RNC's 9/11 exploitation.
09/11/08, 16:19

I think it says a lot about the current political climate in America that someone like Olbermann is so routinely dismissed for such amazingly shallow reasons. "Oh, he pontificates too much" or "Oh, I don't like how he talks." etc...

Countdown is THE ONLY, repeat, THE ONLY mainstream news show on a major cable network that ever devoted any time to covering the in-depth details of the numerous Bush Administration scandals, short of doing full-on documentaries on it (like, say, Frontline). The show routinely lays out the paths of the scandals, who is involved, why they are involved, etc. etc. Despite the obvious leaning to the left of the show, it is probably one of the most informed political analysis shows on television, and does without the fanfare of ludicrous on-air arguments and counter-pounding blowhards saying controversial things to sell their next book. And amazingly enough, despite not being anywhere near as over the top as something like, say, O'Reilly Factor, this show which actually cares about factual details (and thus might be categorized as boring) manages to keep competitive ratings, which means at least as many people watch it as veg out in front of Fox for a free lobotomy.
Yes Olbermann gets preachy once and awhile. To dismiss him and his show solely for that is fucking ridiculous. And it's precisely the kind of thinking the right-wing has hoped to indoctrinate everyone with over the last decade or so: make sure that your politicians, authority figures, and anyone you get information from are judged NOT on the CONTENT of what they say or do, but how they "come off." Look where we are at right now...instead of serious issues at the forefront of politics, the news is dominated by this "pig in lipstick" bullshit which was specifically engineered FOR THAT VERY PURPOSE.
Olbermann has his flaws, but he's easily one of the best television hosts and journalists to reach this state of mainstream in a very long time. I will gladly, GLADLY take a "Murrow-wannabe" any day over most of what passes for TV personalities nowadays.
Did any other mainstream TV journalist/host/whoever make ANY kind of passionate statement about the 9/11 film at the RNC? If so, I'm curious who did and on what network, because all I saw was the usual talking head bullshit.

Spore - Full TV Ad
09/11/08, 01:58

I think my favorite thing about Spore is how the developers did that smug, pretentious thing of "Oh man, there's NO WAY you'll see this on a CONSOLE!! This is a complex PEE-CEE game for a totally different crowd!!" and it turns out to have as much depth and complexity as an XBLA game. (less in some cases)

My contribution to Non-anime Japanese cinema week. This is an amazing movie.
Waiting for Guffman-Dairy Queen

The movie is great, but not the kind of funny most people are into, I will concede. This scene doesn't work too well on its own.

Barack Obama on the O'Reilly Factor - 9/9/08
09/10/08, 17:54

These interviews must have been very, VERY hard for O'reilly since their framing made it virtually impossible for him to control the agenda like he does on his show, although the editing down takes care of some of that.

He's still a douchebag of the highest order. He's using a classic bigot/racist technique of trying to come off as the good guy because "Well, shucks, whaddya know the filthy nigra actually isn't so bad!! Why, I talked with him and he didn't once eat watermelon or pray to Allah!"

It's a nicer version of his "WOW THE NIGGERS IN HARLEM WERE NICER THAN I EXPECTED" thing last year.

It's funny and I know that these aren't really "Serious" reviews, but damn did he drop the ball on about 1,000 other opportunities to slag this game.

I will say this: at the bookstore where I work virtually the entire teen magazine section is now nothing but Jonas Brothers crap. Every month there's at least 12-20 magazines solely about the JB.

I'm guessing we'll never hear from this guy again...he hasn't made a video in about 2 months and it seems like he stopped right when his hits started going up.

Actually, it's more accurate than you think. Much of the Nazi Party's evolution was heavily influenced by the occult and some strange occult beliefs. (see the Thule Society)

The Bounty - highlights of Bligh
09/09/08, 12:06

This is a really good movie as well. Good supporting cast as well, although Mel Gibson is maybe a tad too....melodramatic.

I think what I like about this movie the most is that it really doesn't take a side, I don't think. I think it really, deftly balanced the line of making out both Bligh and Christian as men doing wrong things for reasons they felt were right, and by the end of the film, the semingly bold heroism of Christian is overshadowed by his failures and the fact that Bligh could be killed by weeks on the open sea.

In other words, I don't think anyone is portrayed as totally wrong or right like it was in the older versions.
