It's almost like one of the most influential comedies in British history was influential or something.

Best part? This isn't a commercial. It was intended as a promo to be shown primarily as an in-the-industry thing.

As 90s comedies go, especially SNL character movies, it's not bad, but it's very dated. I think most would argue the sequel was better because of it's absurdism, but it's hard to keep perspective on these movies because of how uniformly awful everything Carvey and Myers has been since. (yeah whatever Austin Powers was a lazy satire)
Gotcha!
08/26/13, 03:11

Gotcha isn't that bad a game. The person playing this isn't even playing it properly. You have to move the screen left and right with the D-pad. For a Zapper game, it was alright. Probably one of the few LJN licensed games (Gotcha! was a briefly lived line of splatball guns) that wasn't complete garbage.

I still love the cognitive dissonance of turning a novel about how fucking awful class war, social injustice, and poverty was in 1800s France into a musical with PRETTY PEOPLE and PRETTY MUSIC and dumbing the whole thing down so that people who can barely read cereal boxes can pretend to have some emotional connection to a novel they couldn't even begin to comprehend without Cliff's Notes.
I'm sure it's what Victor Hugo would have wanted.

Just out of curiosity, why the resubmit and why did people vote it up? The original video had an actual Batman theme to it rather than just words.
Robocop 2 - Trailer

I thought this movie was fucking great. It was just this blast of offensive, ludicrously violent bullshit spat into your face for 2 hours and it was wonderful. I remember how the idea of a super-violent, 13-year old drug dealer was pretty much the moral panic/end of civilization at the time and the violence alone put this movie on so many lists about how horrifically immoral Hollywood was becoming.

I thought this was a brilliant sequel...not quite on the same level as if it had been Verhoeven, probably, but still...great movie.

3.....not so much.

For the record, I'm not one of these whiny shut-in nerd types who spent all day furiously posting to facebook why Ben Affleck is a dumb choice for Batman. Personally, I think casting him as Batman is just dumb because he already had a bite at the comic-book apple and it was called Daredevil and I think after that he should just not be any more comic characters. But they could resurrect Lawrence Oliver and cast him as Batman and it won't make a bit of difference because the movie will suck. But it will make money, so whatever.
Fear of The Unknown: Lovecraft Documentary

Actually if you guys want to read good, "weird" literature in the Lovecraft vein, best thing you can do if you don't like Lovecraft himself is read the authors that directly influenced him. Some of the best stuff I have ever read comes from authors like Clarke Ashton Smith, Robert Chambers, Algernon Blackwood (whose "The Willows" Lovecraft considered to be one of the best supernatural horror short stories ever written), Lord Dunsany, William Faulkner's "weird" stories, the stand alone work of Robert E. Howard, some of Edgar Allan Poe's work...etc.

I particularly loved the outrageous butthurt after the show about the Gorillagram thing NOT LETTING US SEE TITTIES!

Apparently this was a huge controversy with many people in many dank basements.

August Derlith technically "built on" the Mythos stories, but most would argue he did not do them "better." He turned the Mythos into "good space aliens versus bad space aliens" instead of the cosmic horror idea that Lovecraft used which is that these creatures exist, but that mankind is nothing more to them than insects and that their ultimate goal in the universe is completely unknown.

The only other writer I am aware of to do a lot of Lovecraft related work is Brian Lumley, whose Lovecraftian stuff is not bad, but not really as good as the original stuff.

This doesn't strike me as super terrible (though the proximity to Joy Division rip off is uncomfortably close) but it also isn't something I would pay money to listen to. Sorry Trent. Loved your early stuff, but not NO MO.
Death From Above

No one was really being serious in this movie (although rumor has it that Denise Richards didn't really "get it" and was upset that people thought she was such a stupid character) and I never understood why it was so hard for people to grasp it. It's not some grand masterpiece, but Verhoeven and crew pretty much trolled Hollywood pretty good with this one.

Everyone should watch this movie with the Verhoeven/Neumeyer commentary track which is pretty entertaining. (not sure how common it is now, but it was featured on the 2-disc edition of the DVD that came out in the early 2000s)

Stand Up to 'Stand Your Ground'
08/22/13, 13:22

@EvilHomer

Deadly force as self defense usually comes with the legal obligation that you had no other recourse. "Stand Your Ground" makes it so that even if you are in a position of safety and retreat from danger, you can still go out of your way to inflict lethal force on people provided they "scare you" which is tantamount to legalizing vigilantism, which si EXACTLY what Zimmerman did.

Right now, most courts do not look favorably on lethal force cases, despite what gun nuts and TV shows want you to think. If you bring a gun into a situation where the other person does not have a gun, legally YOU are considered to be the one who upped the ante and made the situation more volatile. This is unfortunate for a lot of people who use guns to defend themselves for legit reasons, but then still find themselves in jail. But it is a statistical fact that people who use guns in civil conflict cases almost always do not come out of it well, even when they were 100% in the right. (the exception to this is home invasion, which most courts grant wide latitude with..killing someone breaking into your home is usually not prosecuted very harshly and courts typically don't convict people in those cases)

There is sane and rational discussion to be had on whether or not current self-defense laws are adequate and evenly applied across the board. Stand Your Ground is NRA/Gun-nut bullshit and should not have any place in any state law. It effectively allows someone to retreat into safety, then arm themselves, then put themselves BACK INTO the conflict they escapes, enact revenge, and make a legal claim it was self defense whose legal standard is just some voodoo bullshit like "whether or not the person still felt threatened or that other people were threatened." Stand Your Ground almost makes that assumption FOR the court, rather than it being a detail of the case to be presented later.
