Pixar Almost Deleted Toy Story 2 Mid-Production
05/16/12, 07:34 I'm glad it worked out, but I'm sorry she lives in an episode of "The Office". |

Pixar Almost Deleted Toy Story 2 Mid-Production
05/16/12, 04:19 This was 1998 or so; I for one couldn't tell you whether Linux was civilized enough back then to put safeguards on dangerous commands. It could well be that some foolishly overconfident user removed the safeguards because he felt they were too restrictive.
So, she was able to bring copies home to her home computer via some mechanism (Zip cartridge / SparQ drive / CD-RW), but the reverse operation required transporting the home computer itself? |

Punisher: War Zone - Dinner Scene
05/14/12, 22:44 I prefer this version to Treat Williams' performance of the same scene:

The only thing Ray Stevenson could have done better is ask if he could pick some peaches. |

MST3K: Roger Corman's 'The Undead'
05/14/12, 09:16 ... There, I've found a copy in one big video, it should be complete. |

05/13/12, 12:14 Someone send thid video back to the year 1950, and tell them this is an ordinary street scene from 2012.
I was expecting "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. |

Romney Apologizes For 'Hijinks'
05/12/12, 19:27 There's still a complete lack of empathy in there. It's like the difference between children who enjoy being cruel to a family pet, and those who are cruel simply because they don't think of the animal's well-being. I didn't start this out as a dig at Romney, but I see that kind of happened along the way. |

Romney Apologizes For 'Hijinks'
05/11/12, 08:05 They're able to demonstrate what an asshole Mitt is at every phase of his life. It's like "Citizen Kane" except everyone you interview says "yup, he was an asshole" and there's no sense of character growth or change at any point.
Turns out Mitt is the real-life version of all the assholes William Zabka used to play. |

05/10/12, 07:32 I've been there, yep. Sorry to hear about Milo. |

Orgazmo and the As$@k Twins
05/10/12, 04:45 You were right about the hilariously stupid. Unless I miss my guess, half the point of the film was taking hackneyed tropes and trying to play them straighter than they deserve -- think of Choda Boy's "hamster style" angst. |

Clergy Rebukes Media for Asking Wrong Questions About Gay Marriage
05/10/12, 04:29 FYI, as far as 501(c)(3) goes ... turns out the IRS has restrictions against endorsing candidates, but not against endorsing issues. From IRS publication 557:
---
Political activity. If any of the activities (whether or not substantial) of your organization consist of participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office, your organization will not qualify for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3). Such participation or intervention includes the publishing or distributing of statements.
Whether your organization is participating or intervening, directly or indirectly, in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office depends upon all of the facts and circumstances of each case. Certain voter education activities or public forums conducted in a nonpartisan manner may not be prohibited political activity under section 501(c)(3), while other so-called voter education activities may be prohibited. |

Obama comes out in support of same-sex marriage.
05/10/12, 03:55 So I should thank you personally for letting the Teabaggers sweep into office in 2010. Thanks a lot, dumbass. People like you are the Republicans' secret weapon. |

Obama comes out in support of same-sex marriage.
05/10/12, 03:51 "The blacks.... not so much."
If there's one demographic I imagine Obama could persuade to stop being such homophobic jerks, it's black voters. Bear in mind that a lot of black opposition to homosexuality is a holdover of black churches' quest for respectability via orthodoxy, not a desire to find inferiors to hate. |

Obama comes out in support of same-sex marriage.
05/09/12, 20:52 Of course there is political calculation in this. All in all, I think it's the right course: there aren't too many evolutionary throwbacks who weren't already opposed to Obama, and being anti-gay is growing less and less acceptable these days. And I am guessing that black / Hispanic homophobes can be persuaded to come to their senses.
And yes, there does absolutely need to be a pragmatic assessment of political costs for championing a traditionally-disenfranchised group. Let's take a look at the Civil Rights Act: it's been 40+ years and the Democrats are still paying the price for it, with Republicans scoring easy victories over half the US just by dogwhistling to bigots. This has effectively meant that, thanks to the Civil Rights Act, Republicans have been able to block everything from unemployment benefits to action on global warming. Was the Civil Rights Act the right thing? Oh absolutely. Has it cost the Democrats (and the country)? Unquestionably. |
