12/13/11, 03:17 Yep, kind of my point -- had the movie come out in, say, 1987 they would have done the mega-happy ending, where perhaps the judge would have additionally stipulated that Robin Williams gets to keep Pierce Brosnan as his personal servant.
It's a pet peeve of mine, maybe because I was a teenager in the 80s and so many movies back then went for unsatisfyingly shallow endings. Don't get me started on "Weird Science" or the remake of "It's a Good Life" in "Twilight Zone: the Movie"; I'll be bitching all day. | | Super Toilet Can Flush Anything

12/12/11, 13:37 Whoa, you have DEMANDS? I had no idea you were so dedicated.
Obama took office January 2009; Scott Brown took office in February 2010. That works out to one year, not two. Again, you should know this.
And yes, one characteristic of the Democrats is that they don't operate in lockstep the way the Republicans do. Are you saying you really want a Democratic Party that crushes disagreement and dissent? I sure don't. It's unfortunate that it's hard to marshal them when every last vote counts, but that is a big part of why they're not Republicans. | | Al Sharpton anchors MSNBC show about Obama kicking ass
12/12/11, 12:49 Where to begin:
1) This "supermajority" manifested itself only when all 58 Democrats, plus the very liberal Sanders, plus the very conservative Lieberman, all agreed on something. By the way, please note that Lieberman campaigned AGAINST Obama, so getting Lieberman on board was unlikely under even the best of circumstances. And among just the 58 Democrats, you have a spread of opinion from far left to far right. In short, this "supermajority" you seem to think existed, really didn't except for the most uncontroversial of legislation, or where the Democratic leaders worked like hell to achieve unanimity.
2) All claims to a "supermajority" ended in early 2010 when Ted Kennedy died and his seat went to a Republican. How did you not know this? How can any person be opinionated enough to talk politics on the Internet yet fail to be aware of this? Seriously, I'd like to know how.
3) It's unfortunate, but because a lot of people vote Republican, it means they have every legal right to oppose and block legislation they don't approve of. They're assholes about it, but still, they're just exercising their legal rights, and that is a political reality Obama has to deal with. What you call "Obama appeasing the Republicans", I call "Obama obeying the goddamn law". Or are you saying you'd prefer a system of government where a nation's leader gets to dictate exactly what is legal and what is prohibited? No? Then if you want to fix government, first step is to weaken the Republicans so they don't have to be negotiated with. | | Asian caught masturbating in a library

If there is any upside to this, it's that, if Carl Monday is known nationwide for anything, it's for harassing masturbators. | | The Daily Show - "You Jackin It?"

12/12/11, 12:09 Do any of you honestly believe that Republicans would even be trying to repair the economy if they held the White House?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: step one is to knock the GOP out of power, and step two is to improve the Democrats. If you try to go straight to step two without taking care of step one, you'll get a repeat of the 2010 election, where the GOP only gets stronger and kills any chance at all for the sorts of reforms you'd like to see. | | Al Sharpton anchors MSNBC show about Obama kicking ass
12/12/11, 12:06 What was the UN's stance on Libya? I'm sure you knew this already, but the UNSC voted 11-0 (4 abstentions) to send a force to prevent Kaddafi from laying waste to his civilians.
If the US had unilaterally decided to go in, I'd have had assumed there was a vile ulterior motive. If it had been a NATO operation, I would have been highly skeptical. But this was the UN saying that something needs to be done or else a hell of a lot of civilians will die. Not even Russia or China voted against it. | | Mrs. Doubtfire recut trailer
12/12/11, 08:46 One thing I'm glad "Mrs. Doubtfire" did correctly: they didn't go with a mega-happy ending where the judge says, "if you were willing to go to these lengths for your kids, clearly you must be a highly reliable parent, this court sees no reason not to grant full shared custody". The last court scene had the judge suspending contact altogether pending a psychological evaluation, though the wife understood, and there was at least a breakthrough on that front. About as positive an ending as was possible given the circumstances.
A thing I despise about movies from the 80s is that they went for the mega-happy endings a little too often, and while happy endings are good, sometimes they took it too far. In "Back to the Future" they ended up enslaving the guy who used to bully the dad, and that's a GOOD thing? Never mind that this is the guy who once tried to rape Mrs. McFly, and now you're giving him unfettered physical access to her as years of frustration accumulate and fester in him. That's really going to turn out well in "Back to the Future 4: Special Victims Unit". | | Gilligan's Island Home Movies
12/11/11, 18:26 I still say "Gilligan's Island" was the tale of a drug deal thwarted by an unexpected storm, and Mary Ann was an undercover DEA agent.

Pick the "Dr. Bronner" filter, I dare you. | | Obama responds to the question of whether he engages in appeasement
12/10/11, 10:54 I can understand being disappointed with Obama, but bear in mind that disappointment has everything to do with expectations, and don't lose perspective because of your expectations. When Republicans do something indefensibly corrupt nobody is surprised or disappointed, so "Progressives" tend to be more forgiving of Republicans than of Democrats who fail to give them everything they want. Which keeps "Progressives" home on election day. Which gives the Republicans more power. Which means Democrats can deliver even less of what the "Progressives" wanted.
Step one is to keep Republicans out of power: vote for whatever guy can beat them, which is usually the Democrat. Step two is to press the Democrats to pass good legislation. But you can't get to step two without completing step one; with a House GOP majority and 41+ GOP Senators, there is very little good legislation that can make it through both chambers. | | Obama responds to the question of whether he engages in appeasement
12/09/11, 18:29 To put things in perspective, when Medicare was passed, there were only 30 Republican Senators, and 14 of them voted for the thing. The Republicans couldn't have filibustered even if they'd wanted to, and around half of them wouldn't have even supported one anyway.
People are somehow convinced this is like a football game where the team that "wants it more" will prevail, and if Obama can't just trample over the Republicans, it must be because of a lack of will on his part. Couldn't have anything to do with those pesky laws that our government runs according to, could it? | | Obama responds to the question of whether he engages in appeasement
12/09/11, 17:42 Funny thing about Obama's "appeasement" on domestic affairs: a lot of that is what we used to call "obeying the law". Because a lot of people vote Republican, there is a sizeable Republican contingent in Congress, and they have a legal right to oppose bills they find unacceptable.
I find it astonishing, and genuinely saddening, that so many otherwise intelligent and informed people think that Obama runs the country like a dictator, and if (for example) a Public Option was not passed, it must be because Obama willed it not to happen.
I've got my problems with Obama, but I am also careful to differentiate between matters he has high control over and matters where, because our government operates according to laws, there must be agreement between Republicans and Democrats. | | M*A*S*H* - Colonel Potter is sick and tired of this shit.

TV shows of the 70s and 80s weren't known for their subtle handling of matters of social import. | |
