Bill O'Reilly says bankers didn't break any laws
10/24/11, 08:13 This is probably the case: much of the banking industry's meltdown occurred not because people were breaking the law, but because they were taking advantage of newly-legal opportunities.
And where laws were broken, convictions may not be possible because there are high standards of proof that must be met, involving deliberate fraud vs. inability to foresee what is going to happen in a volatile market. |

Sgt. Shamar Thomas tells off 30+ police.
10/17/11, 15:38 misterbuns: you cannot possibly be missing the point so badly unless it's deliberate. As far as we know (and as far as Thomas knows), these cops haven't hurt anyone. He references something he saw on October 5, and while that was almost certainly reprehensible, he's trying to hold these particular cops accountable for it. How fair is that? About as fair as accusing Sgt Thomas of torture in Iraq because he's a soldier too. |

Sgt. Shamar Thomas tells off 30+ police.
10/17/11, 14:47 I don't think this guy tortured anyone, though it's possible he did.
I don't see any evidence that these cops have beaten anyone, though it's possible they did.
All I'm seeing on this video is a guy accusing cops of very non-specific sins, and the cops refusing to engage. |

Sgt. Shamar Thomas tells off 30+ police.
10/17/11, 13:27 I appreciate his solidarity with the other protesters, but he seems to be shouting at policemen who aren't actually hurting anyone and seem determined to not turn this into a fight. If there had been a beat-down immediately before this by these officers, I'm not seeing signs of it. (That said, I haven't watched the whole video; I got bored of him shouting about "honor" and sort of fast-forwarded through. If someone wants to point me to a moment that shows evidence of a beat-down, I'm ready to eat crow.)
He's an Iraq vet, right? I wonder how he'd feel if I asked him why he tortured Iraqi prisoners. |

Merrie Melodies: Daffy Duck the Wizard
10/14/11, 16:45 I like the "Wizards and shit" tag too, and wouldn't mind it here.
But it's ass for actually finding a video. |

Merrie Melodies: Daffy Duck the Wizard
10/14/11, 10:17 Dupe, but the only tag on the other one was "Wizards and shit", so it's really not your fault.

The Uncanny Valley
10/12/11, 15:42 Going off some of my reactions to Uncanny Valley situations, my gut instinct is: "it is diseased, it is unclean, it may harm me just by being near me". Maybe it's a primal instinct developed to protect against disease? Or perhaps it came about as a way to deal with birth defects: it's easier for everyone to agree to kill Mrs. Ug's improperly-formed offspring if we all feel a sense of revulsion. |

Grayson vs. O'Rourke
10/10/11, 08:13 I lost patience with O'Rourke when he took to arguing that taxation deprives people of the opportunity to give to charity. I have yet to meet the person whose priorities are "basic necessities, then taxes, then charity, then leisure items"; people put leisure goods ahead of charity, and that's what taxes cut into. And that's really what O'Rourke is objecting to, but is trying to make it sound like a virtue. Douchebag.
... Actually I do know people who put charity above leisure, but they are pleased as punch that there is an organization like the government that can challenge poverty on a large scale. So they aren't the people O'Rourke is making excuses for. |

This genre is known as "Chap Hop", and Professor Elemental here has an ongoing rivalry with Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer. |

Jesus Ween
10/08/11, 09:39 I got my first Jack Chick tract one Halloween when I was a young Bort; one house was giving them out instead of candy. So this isn't totally new.
Years later ("I Was a Teenage Bort", soon to be a major motion picture), it occurred to me that Halloween needs to be more Jesusy, so I made a Jesus pumpkin. Despairing expression, eyes casting skyward, long black hair and a crown of thorns. Perhaps the time for this has come around again?
Pencils, toothbrushes, and the "Big Daddy?" tract all suck ass, but there is something to be said for giving something out that isn't candy. Little toys or pretzels become a welcome change of pace when a kid's already got ten Milky Way bars. |
