Being Boiled
03/30/09, 17:29

This is very very early League, and the closest recorded version of "Being Boiled" is the Fast Product flexidisc version, on the reissued CD of Reproduction. Travelogue is a bit more solid as an album, and one of the reissue bonus tracks is the fleshed-out single release of "Being Boiled," which isn't as good but is an interesting comparison. There's a comp called "The Golden Hour of the Future" on Richard X's label, Black Melody, that covers the pre-Reproduction stuff.

Dare is where the actual musicians in the League called it quits and formed British Electronic Foundation/Heaven 17, and thanks to producer Martin Rushent more or less replacing them, Dare is just as awesome as early League, albeit in a different way. Do yourself a favor and stop after Dare, though. They have their single moments after that- "Fascination," "The Lebanon," and, a highly divisive song that I think is near-complete crap, "Human"- but the albums generally aren't worth bothering with.

Heaven 17, on the other hand, made "Penthouse and Pavement," which is a stone-cold fucking classic, and the first BEF album is pretty damn good too.

The worst song on their album, but damn, that's a great video.

I am wearing those exact same boots right now.

They squeak.

(I am not a lesbian.)

((To the best of my knowledge.))

I think this may be a single entendre, or even a fractional entendre.

See also the new Midnight Massiera comp on Finders Keepers, or the Psychoses Discoid and Psychoses Freakoid comps on some Canadian label whose name escapes me at the moment. And also the other songs this guy's uploaded, he's got excellent taste.

IT'S ALL FOR YOU, KINGARTHUR

Also, apparently Perez Hilton loved this video, but I don't think we should hold that against it.

The weird shifts in tone are Obayashi, not the original manga, which is entirely straight, fairly scary, and depressing as hell.

The student who made this also made a great Muppet Show/Peaches video:

It helps that old-school Disney animation is a hell of a lot more fluid than Captain Planet and gives them a lot more lipsync to work with.

It's kind of intriguing that they're ditching the whole Cramps/Lord Sutch garage-psychobilly thing that up til now was their entire aesthetic, though I'm not exactly impressed that they've figured out the motorik beat in 2009. Still, the next album ("Primary Colours," har har) should be interesting at the very least.

I have no idea. I heard this song on Erol Alkan's A-Z session on Radio 1 and had it stuck in my head for weeks.

The first Cocteau Twins track I ever heard. I think it was the first result that came up in Napster after I decided to find out what this Liz Fraser person was up to besides guesting on my favorite Massive Attack album.
