Granted, that's CAMERA, which is pro-Israel, but the arguments the author makes are valid. Finkelstein is not completely genuine. He is playing a scholastic game, and it does not necessarily have the interests of Palestinians in mind.

He's a cause célèbre who gains great wealth and notoriety by being a contrarian. Nobody is arguing that Israel was founded on rainbows and kindness, but asking Israelis to "go home" is insanity. The fact that the most vile rightwing conspirators and autocratic thugs have raised Finkelstein up to be their standard bearer is maybe a hint that he's a complete monster.

That's not to say he doesn't have valid points; there is a "holocaust industry," Jews do rip each other off and do horrible things, the treatment of Palestinians is unjust. In fact, the first apartheid in Israel was Jewish apartheid. It was based on filial connections and national origin (Sephardic Jews, for example, were treated like outcasts).

Israel was founded on thuggery and corruption, like all nations, but that thuggery came from a pretty logical place: the madness created by the Holocaust, the Palestinian participation in that Holocaust, and a need for a homeland. If you want to call it apartheid, it's not going to be lifted if fascist-sponsored terrorist groups are made representatives of the Palestinian people by people like Norm Finkelstein.

That's not how it worked in South Africa and it's not how it worked in Ireland.

Oh shit Baleen, you almost sounded reasonable until you revealed your own racism by trying to justify the apartheid in Israel as "coming from a logical place" since the Jews apparently needed a homeland.

I was also unaware that the Palestinians that are having their homes bulldozed, their ancestral farms seized, are forced to live in ghettos behind some giant wall covered with snipers, and are second class citizens that are treated as sub-human in their own fucking country supposedly somehow participated in the holocaust. You want to explain that one to me?

And of course any criticism of Israel or it's policies has to be antisemitism, right? We can't let and Israel/Palestine argument go by without that being the default accusation right from the beginning. Clearly nobody could find the behavior of Israel abhorrent without being antisemitic.

Just as it's stupid to Godwin a thread by comparing something to Hitler, I feel it's also stupid to claim any opposition to Zionism as antisemitic. I personally don't mind the Jewish culture or the Jewish race (and yes it is one to a point because they keep it that way as much as possible). They're nice people from what I've met - well most of them.

The people that aren't nice and who are Jewish have the exact same thing in common with any other fundamentalist religion, and that is that they feel that they should get x, y, or z because of what god said. Well, nobody knows what god said or didn't say and it's all some guess, and you can't use some argument that god chose a certain country for what they claim are his people. That's their basic argument. They claim a right to the country by divine fiat.

I have no respect for people who do not want peace and want violence. To me, anyone that promotes a way of living that promotes violence earns no respect. So, I don't respect Palestine for warring with Israel, and I don't respect the Zionist movement in Israel. I think both are at fault, and I don't frankly give a rat's ass what their race or religion are. Besides, how in the hell are you going to convince someone that god didn't tell them whatever it was they wanted to hear?

The anti-semitic crack was meant partly as a joke... Anybody that defends Israel's right to exist is met with anti-Palestine and "anti-Zionist" rage.

As I said, the solution is a one-state system involving reconciliation. This issue is extremely complicated and I just get tired of the one sided nature of it I see on here. It just seems like people are repeating Finkelstein's thought process ad nauseam without taking into account the vitriolic aspects of his position.
