He could have just smacked them with the curtain rod until they gave up. He could have brandished it and told them to get the fuck out, or at least held them at bay until the police arrived. He could even have smacked them a few times until they gave up and went away, and still could have claimed self-defense.

He's had a rough life, and I feel for him. I've worked service, and I sympathize with his desire to make those goddamn asshole customers pay. However, what he chose to do went far beyond self-defense, and now he's going to be looking at some variety of assault charges at best.
