When I was a kid during the cold war, we were taught that Soviet propaganda was at best an extreme caricature of the worst parts of capitalism and democracy. Turns out we are the caricature.

Cena_mark - 2011-11-11

Right. The tightly controlled propaganda machine of the USSR is all justified now because 25 years later we've had a recession...

memedumpster - 2011-11-11

I remember nuclear drills in elementary school. I once asked a guy who grew up in the Soviet Union who was about my age what they did in school to prepare for WWIII. He said field strip rifles.

They would have won.

Cena_mark - 2011-11-11

Sounds like those kids were ready to form the Wolverines in case we invaded.

Jeriko-1 - 2011-11-11

Reagen sure did his damndest to ensure that caricature would become reality.

I thought the crazy cult in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were all Russian people based on what I had heard at school about Russians. But you're right, memedumpster, I have a friend that is now about 40 yrs old, and she can disassemble and reassemble an AK47 in under 30 seconds. I asked why she knew how to do that, she said it was just a class during Jr. High. There was a shooting range in the basement too. And there was a massive recession in the 80's too, probably around when this was put out.

Cena-Mark... kinda like the Iraqis, huh? They learned well from American Pop Culture Propaganda, didn't they...
Don't you have a poop deck to swab, coastie?

Old People - 2011-11-11

Ocyrus, are you seriously comparing the Iraq War to Red Dawn?

cognitivedissonance - 2011-11-12

I recently tried to explain nuke drills to my siblings, and there's a five year difference between us. They didn't believe. I also tried to explain a time before the McNugget, but, again, they didn't believe me.

Syd Midnight - 2011-11-18

Cena, the Russian kids were *already* Wolverines. That was considered normal civilian training. "Today we learn how to hide in snow, stop tank." Do you have any idea what Russians turn into when they're invaded? Ask any former world power that was dumb enough to try. And they were not going to invade us, they weren't stupid enough to think they could win a nuclear war, but they knew that we were.

That's our own propaganda, we need a scary enemy to keep us fighting "wars" over things that aren't important enough to actually go to war over. "We cannot allow [political party] to defeat [other political party] in [some shitty country's civil war]! We must support [some dictator]'s fight against the brutal forces of [some other asshole], or they'll be marching down your street next!"

chumbucket - 2011-11-11

I'm the perfect example of the U.S. product of Bronson, Stallone and Swayze films.

Gojira1000 - 2011-11-11

Doesn't look a lot different than any propaganda anywhere.

garcet71283 - 2011-11-11

Hate to break it to everybody but the only form of government that works is absolute dictatorship.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-05-12

Hahaha, silly Russkies: there's no shame about the USAs endemic racism.
