this game looks like a fantastic tech demo and i look forward to playing a fun game with a similar level of detail and craftsmanship

IrishWhiskey - 2011-12-02

You're right. This short clip of a person examining insects and pottering about a garden is totally representative of the gameplay. It's not fun or exciting at all, and you shouldn't give it a second look.

If anyone approaches you talking about Skyrim having assassin's guilds, ancient tombs, political intrigue and dragons, punch them in the face and run away. They are malicious deceivers, and their lies will burn your ears.

Bethesda's games are basically really nice RPG engines for modders to improve and polish.

Except for the glitches. Those need to be made into a setting on the preferences somewhere, because they're often the most amazing parts of their games.

I wish you guys were harder to troll, like the Coast Guard.

I liked this though, very soothing.

You know, I think Bethesda learned a lot from Oblivion. I'm finding that with Skyrim, I'm really not desperate for mods like I was with their previous effort. So far I've installed a better night sky mod, a glowing ore veins mod and I've done some tweaks to the shadows and RAM usage.

You know what? Apart from the player created houses and shit that I look forward to in any Elder Scrolls game, I'm really not wanting for much. The graphics are great, the combat feels meaty, the quests are solid and the voice acting is generally decent. I love the new perks system (despite the dubious usefulness of some perks) and I like how they've refined alchemy and enchanting.

Sure there are glitches here and there (I personally haven't found that many) and you'll get that with any open worlder, but on the whole I'm really impressed with this game's level of polish.

The one major complaint from me is that Skyrim seems to suffer from loot overkill (pretty much the opposite of Oblivion). Every second chest I open has some kind of enchanted item (often it's the exact same enchanted item I just found in a previous dungeon). I've stockpiled thousands of dollars worth of loot in my house, but of course I can't sell any of it for shit until I raise my people skills.

@Jimmy: As with the Fallout series, I think the "loot problem" comes from them having to make the game a lot like the classic D&D adventures of old, and have it possible for every player to gather enough resources to play effectively. What most of us wind up doing, though, is ransacking every chest, barrel, crate, townsperson, and farm animal for every possible item we can. No DM would have put up with that, but the computer lets us grab everything that isn't nailed down like we've got kleptomaniacal OCD or something.

I'm not sure what a solution would be for any RPG, aside from the one that 4e D&D seems to use: Make magic stuff (and a lot of mundane stuff) usable by only VERY specific classes and races, and then make their sale price 1/5 of retail, no matter how powerful or rare the item is. It's unrealistic, but it does pretty much limit the ol' Monty Haul effect.

come on this game looks like dog shit. i mean very visually striking dog shit but still shit from a dog's ass. not just based on this video, just everything. don't tell me to play it before i decide either cause i already played oblivion and in retrospect fuck that boring game.

Burnov - 2011-12-03

Trespasser was much the same for me back in the day.

It wasn't really so much a game as it was a tech demo, but I still enjoyed it.

Riskbreaker - 2011-12-03

These games are designed to look this pretty for a reason: to make you forget how boring and tedious the main quest is.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-12-02

I'd love to roleplay the game as a Karl Pilkington character:

"Dovahkiin, we need to to slay the dragon outside the city gates."

"Yeah, but... You know, wouldn't it be better, if we left the dragons roamin about? I mean, there's too many people alive now anyway. We just keep casting a new restoration spell on 'em, and no one's allowed to die. And that's not even including the zombies and stuff. Even if I die, I'm still not gettin' any rest. So wouldn't it be better, right, if we had dragons, so that way the weak one's get picked off? You wouldn't see Gladys down at the market anymore, and you'd think "ooh. Dragon musta got her." I mean, I'm busy enough as it is, trackin' ants and stuff. And now you're telling me to do this? You fix me boiler, then I'll take a look at your dragon."

Callamon - 2011-12-02

It was incredibly easy to hear him saying that in my head.

SweaterCollection - 2011-12-02

Dovahkiin, do we need 'em?

You know, I'd never noticed just how soothing Mr. Pilkington's voice is when it isn't being constantly interrupted by Gervais's shrieking laughter.

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-03

True, that.

craptacular - 2011-12-02

+10 stars for skyrim videos, -5 stars for the game getting kind of.. i dunno, boring, i guess. i knew i should have bought saint's row the third instead

Ursa_minor - 2011-12-03

That was weirdly pretty.
