If you watch the credits, he was head writer for most, if not all of the show's run. He was almost always the guy behind the better jokes.

I still love Joel for his innocent attitude, but both hosts have a special place in my heart.

Yeah, Joel's major contributions were the gizmonics (the invention exchange things and a lot of the wacky props), as that was kind of what he did when he was a stand-up comic. Plus, he had the stoner cue-card reading delivery that was kind of endearing.

When he left to do that horrid "TV Wheel" one-off on Comedy Central, you really got an idea how much he needed the other cast members.

In fairness to Joel, he admits, in retrospect, that leaving MST was a little arrogant and mistaken. He admits he had kind of a "these people are going to sink me" attitude. Everyone is all made up now, though, they just prefer doing their riffing stuff separately as Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic.
