Ugh. This Zaphod has no charisma and is too present for his own excitement.
I always saw Zaphod as someone who is convinced of his own fantasticness and is somewhat inured to it.
I preferred this one over Movie-Zaphod, fake head and all. The way they portrayed the second head in the film made little sense, his political opponent and that ray gun sub-plot went nowhere, and it wasn't worth it just to have him wearing a juicer on his head for the rest of the movie.
Also, Trillian sucked (but she kind of did in the Beeb series, too), and the BBC version of Deep Thought surpassed the movie version in both presentation and performance.
It also irked me that the final line made no sense, about Milliways being "that way" when it's on Magrathea, but in the far, far future... which isn't really a direction.
In closing, the radio series is also very good, and delivers more laughs than the film.
Say what you will about the '05 remake, Sam Rockwell fucking nailed it as Zaphod. Casting in that thing was perfect.
The BBC take felt more true to the series than anything a big-budget flick could hope for. Hitchhiker's Guide is not something you can throw 50 million dollars at and hope for the best.
I had long since forgotten that this show's theme song is by the Eagles.
